Miles Upshur’s journey through Mount Massive Asylum is coming to the big screen thanks to a partnership between Lionsgate and Outlast developer Red Barrels. Bloody Disgusting broke the news that the video game series is headed for the big screen, with longtime series writer JT Petty tapped to work on the screenplay. He isn’t alone in developing the adaptation. Horror veteran Roy Lee, whose other work includes It (2017) and Late Night With The Devil (2024), will join him on the production side.

Outlast‘s reputation is one of tense, heart-pounding atmospheric horror. The first game alone provides enough scares to fuel ten movies, but there’s more to making a film than raw creepiness. That’s nothing new for Lionsgate, the studio behind the James Wan and Leigh Wannel-created SAW franchise that has haunted audiences since 2004. Still, Lee knows exactly what the fans are looking for, and is ready to bring it to life in an entirely new way.

“Its deep, emergent lore has provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that delves into the psychological and physical horrors at the core of the franchise,” Lee revealed in a statement.

Psychological and physical horror is an apt description. Influenced by movies like The Blair Witch Project and REC (and games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent) both Outlast and Outlast 2 feature grotesque and adrenaline-pumping set pieces. Violent psychiatric patients, unhinged cultists, and nightmare creatures haunting your every step are just a brief look at how the series has traumatized players over the years.

We don’t know how close the movie will stick to the classic story beats, but no matter what, this new format will retain all of the macabre spirit of the seminal spooky-time games. Red Barrels Co-founder David Chateauneuf chimed in on the development, delivering high praise for both Lionsgate and Lee.

“As die-hard fans of horror across every medium, at Red Barrels we are great admirers of Roy Lee’s and Lionsgate’s work,” he said. “Horror movies old and new have had an undeniable impact on our franchise over the years, and to now have the opportunity to work on an Outlast film with true horror legends is a dream, or should I say, nightmare, come true.”

A film isn’t the only bold new step for the franchise in recent memory. Last year’s Outlast Trials traded in the deeply isolating feeling of the early games for a subtler kind of collective dread. In that game, up to four players team up to survive the tasks set out for them by a deranged director of a Cold War-era medical facility. While there are more people to share in the misery, it still retained all of the grimy, paralyzing scares that made the first game a hit eleven years ago.

A new medium brings new challenges, but it won’t be shocking if the eventual Outlast movie brings all the same terrifying feelings fans have come to love.

Roy Lee is also a producer on the Minecraft Movie and the upcoming film adaptation of Until Dawn.

Parker Finn’s Smile 2 made a bigger splash with its opening than the original Smile in 2022 with not only its box-office performance, but also with critics, as the sequel sits at 85% positive reviews compared to the original’s 79% positive. In addition to the sequel earning more attention than the debut movie, the sequel concluded with a more explicit tease that the demonic curse of the franchise was about to be taken to new levels, with Finn recently confirming he’d only be interested in continuing the saga if he could find a way to tell character stories as opposed to delivering cheap scares. He also teased he personally saw a lot of storytelling opportunities for the franchise, though a third film has yet to officially be confirmed. Smile 2 is in theaters now.

“Well, I will say this, I think there are a lot of interesting roads that any future Smile could go down. For me, I love all the stuff that goes bump in the night, and all the really frightening things of the big concept of Smile and the Smiler,” Finn detailed to Collider. “But really, for me, Smile is a vehicle to tell really intense and hopefully thoughtful character stories, and so I’d wanna make sure, regardless of if more than one person might have it, that we still find a way to really invest intimacy into the storytelling. That’s super important to me. But I think there are some really interesting tricks still up the sleeves of Smile.”

The original movie focused on Dr. Rose Cutter (Sosie Bacon) witnessing a client kill themselves in front of her, only for audiences to realize the young woman had become possessed by a supernatural curse. In Smile 2, the curse had made its way to pop singer Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), whose past trauma and guilt manifested the curse in bigger and more horrifying ways.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Smile 2

Part of what sets the sequel apart from the original movie is that, while the debut movie saw the curse passing from one person to another, in the finale of Smile 2, Skye violently kills herself in front of an entire crowd at her concert. It can be assumed that thousands of people in the audience will now be targeted by the curse, spreading it even further for another entry.

Finn is currently attached to develop a new take on the 1981 horror classic Possession, and while that project doesn’t have a release date, it would seem likely that he would move forward on that before a new Smile. The success of both films, however, could mean that, rather than Finn helming a follow-up movie, another filmmaker could step in for Smile 3, or that another story could be told in that world that wasn’t a direct continuation of Smile 2.

Stay tuned for updates on the future of the Smile franchise. Smile 2 is in theaters now.

Wizarding World: Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts

It seems Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has been struck with the killing curse. Actor Eddie Redmayne, who played magizoologist Newt Scamander in the J.K. Rowling-penned trilogy, told ComicBook this week that moviegoers “probably have” seen the last of his character on the big screen after Warner Bros. Discovery rebranded the Wizarding World franchise to simply Harry Potter. And now Jude Law, who portrayed the younger Dumbledore in two of the three Fantastic Beasts installments, suggests Warner Bros. has abandoned plans for the fourth and fifth Fantastic Beasts movies.

“I know it’s certainly on hold,” Law told Variety. “My guess would be that, now that they’re doing Harry Potter as a TV show, they’ll probably put their energy into that. I certainly haven’t heard that there’s anything on the horizon.”

Even before the first Fantastic Beasts released in 2016, author and series creator Rowling announced a five-movie plan for the spinoffs set nearly a century before the events of the Harry Potter films. Fantastic Beasts, based on the fictional textbook within the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, went on to gross $814 million at the global box office, while 2018’s The Crimes of Grindelwald dropped to $654 million. 2021’s The Secrets of Dumbledore is the lowest-grossing Wizarding World movie at $407 million worldwide.

“I think they probably have [seen the last of Newt],” Redmayne told ComicBook. “That was a very frank answer, but yeah. And that’s as far as I know. I mean, you’d have to speak to the people at Warner Bros. and J.K Rowling, but as far as I know, that’s it.”

In 2020, Redmayne issued a statement saying he disagreed with Rowling’s anti-trans tweets, joining Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Evanna Lynch, and Bonnie Wright in speaking out against the author’s comments. Rowling scripted the first two Fantastic Beasts and co-wrote the third with Harry Potter veteran scribe Steve Kloves.

The HBO Harry Potter TV show is the first live-action project to be greenlit since Secrets of Dumbledore. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has described the Harry Potter franchise as a priority for the company after the eight-movie saga grossed nearly $8 billion between 2001 and 2011.

The television series is described as a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s seven books, with the author serving as executive producer via her Brontë Film. HBO, in association with Warner Bros. Television, is currently casting actors for the series from showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner (HBO’s Succession) and executive producer and director Mark Mylod (Game of Thrones and The Last of Us).

“The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have loved for over twenty-five years,” according to Warner Bros. Discovery. “Each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

Law will next appear as Force user Jod Na Nawood in the new series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which premieres Dec. 3 on Disney+.

Artist Rob Reger’s beloved creation Emily the Strange is getting adapted into an animated movie by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Bad Robot. The Emily the Strange feature film will be written by Moana writer Pamela Ribon, with Reger and his company Cosmic Debris producing with Bad Robot. Trevor Duke-Moretz is also credited as an executive producer. Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation made a joint announcement on social media about the Emily the Strange movie, with Rob Reger giving comments to Deadline on the project.

Rob Reger told the outlet that “both the creative and executive teams we have in place for the movie are incredible. Everyone shows up with a keen perspective along with an understanding and respect for the unique connection Emily the Strange has with our ‘real world.’”

He also acknowledged that “Emily celebrates all that is weird and different, which in turn makes the strange and unusual in all of us, feel a little less alone. Bringing to life Emily’s universe and many mythologies we have created over the years is truly one of Emily’s best nightmares come true.”

“Emily is an enduring pop-culture icon of individuality and empowerment, and Pamela Ribon has a singular and iconic voice. What an honor it is for us as Warner Bros. Pictures Animation to partner with Bad Robot, Rob [Reger] and Trevor [Duke-Moretz] in bringing Emily the Strange to the big screen,” Bill Damaschke, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, said.

John Agbaje, SVP of Animation, Bad Robot, added, “At Bad Robot, we are looking to push the boundaries of what’s possible in animation. Emily, a character who refuses to be defined by others, is the perfect opportunity to do just that. We’re thrilled to add her world to our feature animation slate. The team assembled has so much passion for Emily the Strange, what she’s represented so far, and what she will mean to future generations.”

Emily the Strange debuted in the early 1990s across various clothing lines, stickers, and other merchandise. She would later cross over into other forms of media like comic books, video games, and graphic novels. Emily the Strange comics were published by Dark Horse, with the novellas falling under Chronicle Books and HarperCollins. Emily possesses the spunky attitude that a young woman of the world needs to navigate a world that often overlooks or underestimates girls.

Warner Bros. released an animated short announcing Emily the Strange. With Warner Bros. being the home of the Beetlejuice franchise, they may be the perfect studio to bring Emily and her strange world to live.

Halloween falls on a Thursday night this year, which means that in addition to all the Halloween parties, events, and trick-r-treating, there are also going to be some fun group outings to the movies in the hopes of seeing something spooky, chilling, or horrifying on the big screen. Lucky for them, horror has become as much of a go-to for studios as superhero films have; Halloween 2024 has no less than half a dozen different horror flicks currently playing in theaters, which fans can choose from.

Here are your choices!

Best Horror Movies to See in Theaters During Halloween 2024

Smile 2

Smile 2 is the sequel to the breakout hit 2022 film by writer-producer-director Parker Finn. In the sequel, the concept of a grinning supernatural entity passed as a trauma virus gets applied to mega pop star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) who has to face an entire menacing public before launching her world tour.

Smile 2 has been overwhelmingly hailed as being far superior to the original film, not to mention one of the best horror films of the year. Star Naomi Scott (Power Rangers, Disney’s Aladdin) has even been sparking talk about awards nominations (Golden Globe, Oscar) for her performance. With its mix of psychological, supernatural, and bloody gore horror, Smile 2 delivers on all fronts.

Terrifier 3

Art the clown (David Howard Thornton) in “Terrifier 3”

Art the Clown has grown from an indie-horror hopeful to one of the biggest icons of the Halloween 2024 season. Writer-producer-director Damien Leone’s threequel Terrifier 3 has also become the “double-dare-you to see it” horror movie event of the year, with scenes so graphic and disturbing that even the crew of the film was unnerved by them.

If you are looking for the hardest of the hardcore horror movies for your Halloween viewing experience, look no further.

The Substance

the-substance-movie-demi-moore.jpg
Demi Moore in The Substance

The Substance is the dark horse breakout horror hit of the season, and it’s building bigger hype every day. Writer-producer-director Coralie Fargeat delivers one of the best and most biting satirical horror films in years — one with an insane body-horror bend. The story follows former movie star Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) who celebrates her 50th (and a severe injury) by taking a black market drug called “the Substance,” which creates a much younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley).

We’ll stop there, as the actual mechanics of using the substance (and the inevitable cost) are the true “horror” of Fargeat’s film. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are both earning big praise for their respective performances, while Coralie Faregeat is being saluted for her Cronenberg-ian Freaky Friday takedown of Hollywood beauty standards.

Heretic*

Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed in Heretic

This new film by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods is going to be opening in theaters the week after Halloween — but if The Simpsons can do Halloween specials a week (or so) later, why not this list?

Heretic explores the dark, twisted, story of two Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) who come to the wrong house. That house is owned by “Mr. Reed” (Hugh Grant), who turns out to have a deeply nefarious reason for luring the two girls into his house — one that could break their faith, as well as take their life.

Check out our interviews with the Heretic Cast & Crew

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Warner Bros. Pictures

On the lighter side of things: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is still in theaters, and some fans may have been waiting for the Halloween holiday to enjoy it!

In the sequel film, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) returns to Winter River with her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) and stepmother Delia (Catherine O’Hara) to bury her father Charles. Unfortunately, old ghosts still haunt that town, and before long Astrid is snatched into the Ghost World, forcing Lydia and Delia to ally with Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to get her back.

Tim Burton seems to have struck cult-hit gold again, as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice remained at the top of the box office for three consecutive weeks, and continues to play in theaters nearly two months after opening (it even beat Joker 2).

Speak No Evil

speak-no-evil-2024-movie-reviews.jpg

If you like thrillers more than straight-up horror, then Speak No Evil is the one for you to see this year. The remake of the Danish original film turns every couple’s least-favorite social situation (forced company with another couple/family) and turns it into an excruciating downward spiral of increasing tension and awkwardness — and that’s before it crashes out into a full-on slasher/survival experience.

It’s James McAvoy’s biggest “must-see” performance since M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, and concrete proof that the former X-Men actor is uniquely talented at playing a terrifying villain.

Re-Releases

longlegs-nicolas-cage-name-explained.jpg
Nicolas Cage in Longlegs

Check your local theater listings! Movie re-releases have become a regular part of the industry — and seasonal re-releases are a growing trend.

During Halloween 2024, we’ve seen the Texas Chain Saw Massacre back in theaters for its 50th Anniversary, as well as the animated classic The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the seasonal classic, Hocus Pocus.

Also back in theaters are more recent films like horror-comedy hit Happy Death Day and cult-horror hit The Black Phone. During Devil’s Night (October 30th) and Halloween (October 31st), you can find the horror-gaming adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s and Laika Studios’ stop-motion classic Coraline back in theaters (respectively).

Finally, if you missed one of the biggest indie-horror hits of 2024, Longlegs, it is also running in theaters again throughout Halloween.

Godzilla is easily one of the most popular and recognizable kaiju to ever hit the silver screen. Since hitting theaters in the 1950s, the king of the monsters has taken many forms to help increase his rampaging longevity. Whether it be via Legendary’s MonsterVerse or with the Academy Award-winning film, Godzilla Minus One, it doesn’t appear as though the kaiju king’s reign will be ending any time soon. In a recent interview with a long-running Toho producer, the modern era of the lizard king is explored and said producer explains why now might be the best time for the giant monster.

Godzilla Minus One and Shin Godzilla are often referred to as two examples of the best that the king of the monsters has to offer. While Shin was created by director Hideaki Anno and takes place in the present, Minus One examines a very different take on the lizard king during a different Japanese era. While it’s debatable which of these two films reigns supreme, they both remain exemplary examples of what Godzilla can be not just in terms of witnessing kaiju destruction on a massive scale but the ways that humanity can unite and/or dissolve in the face of such a rampage.

Toho

Godzilla’s Modern Era

Producer Shogo Tomiyama has been with the kaiju king for quite some time. Having a major hand in the “Heisei” and “Millennium” eras of Godzilla, Shogo first began with 1989’s Godzilla Vs. Biollante and continued to play a role for twelve movies in total. In discussing Godzilla’s modern era, Tomiyama noted his love of both Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One, proving how versatile the giant beast can truly be.

“I think that their directors’ artistic talents are infused throughout the films and that they are both wonderful works that are highly artistic, with a passion for creation and rare imagination. I expect and have a hunch that we will see more Godzilla films with strong artistic qualities in the future. But, the two most recent films do not really show Godzilla’s creative intention of being ‘scary but cute’.”

Toho

Godzilla’s Future in America And Japan

On the Western Front, Godzilla has quite a few avenues to return thanks to Legendary’s MonsterVerse. Following the success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, a third film in the crossover series has already been confirmed. On top of the theatrical plans, Apple TV+ has renewed Monarch: Legacy of Monsters for a second season, once again revisiting the kaiju-examining organization. If these two venues weren’t enough, the streaming service also confirmed that a spin-off series is in the works, though little to no details have been revealed as of yet.

When it comes to the Godzilla of Japan, the king of the monsters’ future is still anyone’s guess. Despite the massive critical, financial, and audience success of Godzilla Minus One, a sequel film has yet to be confirmed. That hasn’t stopped director Takashi Yamazaki from stating his desire to return to this universe as the creator has hinted that he’d love to give Godzilla a monstrous adversary should he make a comeback. While the latest Toho film saw Godzilla blown to pieces, the final moments of the film hinted at the fact that nothing can keep the lizard king down as his very cells appear to be reconstructing themselves.

His House (2020) Horror Movie

It’s Halloween 2024 and movie lovers are looking for the best kind of spooky films to watch from the safety of home. Well, one great thing about streaming services is they have the metric data to let you know what your best bets are for any kind of TV/movie content — including the best scary movies to watch during Halloween. If you’re a Netflix subscriber, there is one horror film that is currently rated highest: the psychological-supernatural horror film His House.

What Is Netflix’s His House About?

Synopsis: “A refugee couple makes a harrowing escape from war-torn South Sudan, but then they struggle to adjust to their new life in an English town that has an evil lurking beneath the surface.”

His House stars Wunmi Mosaku (Batman v Superman, Marvel’s Loki), Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London, Slow Horses), and Matt Smith (Doctor Who, House of the Dragon). It is written and directed by Remi Weekes, who is making his feature-film debut, after directing shorts, music videos (Jessie Ware “Say You Love Me”), and a TV miniseries (Fright Bites). Weekes wrote the screenplay based on a story by Felicity Evans and Toby Venables (The Baby Swindler).

Wunmi Mosaku & Sope Dirisu in “His House” (2020)

Ironically enough, His House isn’t a new release: the film was released on Netflix on October 30, 2020, making it a major comeback kid, having retained the highest score for a horror movie for the last four years. Weekes hasn’t made another film since — but both Mosaku and Dirisu have become breakout stars, while Matt Smith has graduated from fandom level to mainstream fame with the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon.

As of writing this, His House still holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes (after 126 reviews), with a 73% audience score.

What Do Critics Say About Netflix’s His House?

The mix of real-world refugee drama, the psychological-horror metaphor it creates, and the supernatural elements needed to make it dark and fantastical all blend perfectly to create a horror movie experience with deep resonance.

Critic Bilge Ebiri of New York Magazine‘s Vulture said that “His House is beautifully made, and its scares are monstrously effective, but its images of real-world dread remain unresolved, its specters unvanquished. The film leaves you with wounds that won’t heal.”

Amy Nicholson of NPR Los Angeles said that His House is “an absolute knockout. When we’re looking to the horror genre to tell us stories with such emotional resonance… This film does it just fantastically.”

Even more modest reviews — like Variety‘s Jessica Kiang — still admit that His House is “an uneven but impressive debut… at its most persuasively terrifying when it gets out of the house and into the existential terror of reality.”

His House can only be streamed on Netflix by those with subscriptions.

2024 has been a great year for physical media releases. Even as stores like Best Buy and Target have phased out a lot of their physical movie sales, studios and boutique labels have been releasing a steady stream of very high quality restorations. There have been few 4K titles in 2024 you could point to and say aren’t very good (far fewer than in previous years). As frustrating as the overall state of physical media has seemed lately, we’re at the center of an incredible wave of movie collecting and film preservation, and Arrow Video is leading the charge.

Arrow has been doing impeccable work for years, giving beloved films beautiful restorations and putting together hordes of great features for movie fans to enjoy. It seems like this year, however, Arrow has taken things a step further and really become one of the best (if not THE best) physical media retailers around. Nothing makes that more evident than the two titles that headline Arrow’s horror slate this Halloween season: Trick ‘r Treat and Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment.

These two releases aren’t just among the best physical horror releases in 2024, they’re probably among the best physical movie releases of the year, period.

Let’s start with the Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment (you can order one here), which is without a doubt my favorite 4K box set of 2024. This release contains the first four films from the Hellraiser franchise, all given brand new 4K restorations from their original camera negatives. The Hellraiser movies are bloody, gooey, colorful, and uncomfortably tactile. The 4K transfers give those qualities the kind of life we’ve never seen from these films before. The first time Frank crawls out of the shadows in this restoration of Clive Barker’s original Hellraiser, it’ll send chills up your spine no matter how many times you’ve seen the film.

The quality of all four discs is out of this world, but anyone who has purchased from Arrow before knows that is to be expected. They don’t take these restorations lightly. What really sets the Quartet of Torment apart from other collections, like the recently released Paramount Scares Vol. 2, is just how much work was put into everything beyond the restoration itself.

The first Hellraiser alone has multiple hours of brand new special features that deal with Barker’s legacy and how the film revolutionized the horror genre. There are three feature commentary tracks on this thing, two of which are previous releases that feature Barker, while the third is a brand new commentary with historian Stephen Jones and film critic Kim Newman. You could spend a couple of days working through all of these features, and that’s just on the first disc. All four Hellraiser films in the collection were given a similar treatment.

Maybe the most impressive thing about the Quartet of Torment, though, is the packaging. I’m not usually one to obsess over the box a movie comes in, so long as the disc itself is great. But that’s not the case with his Hellraiser collection. The box alone is almost enough reason to buy it. The outer box, slip-cover, and actual Blu-ray case represent layers of Pinhead that peel back as you get closer to the discs. A full picture of the iconic monster transforms into a layer of flesh and blood, before the slip-cover comes off to reveal nothing but a skeleton. All of that is packaged in nicely with a 200-page hardback book detailing the history and restorations of these films.

Box sets nowadays don’t usually look half as good as the Quartet of Torment. It’s got everything a Hellraiser fan wants or needs. The craziest part is that it’s only one of two phenomenal horror releases from Arrow Video in October.

Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat has become an iconic Halloween rewatch for horror fans over the years. People are still asking Doughtery about a sequel to this connected anthology on a regular basis (and he still plans to deliver one). It’s a movie so many love but hadn’t gotten the 4K release that a lot of film fans hoped for. That changed this month.

Trick ‘r Treat is all about creating an atmosphere, and Arrow’s 4K restoration (approved by Dougherty) brings that atmosphere to the forefront. The shadows are darker than ever before. The glow of the jack-o-lanterns are somehow even warmer than you remember. When things start to get violent, the blood creates a stunning contrast to the rest of the picture. Maybe even more impressive than anything in the picture is the audio track that almost demands some type of surround sound. Wind, leaves, footsteps, and so many individual little elements really pop through this track and transport you to a chilling Halloween night.

Like with the Quartet of Torment, this Trick ‘r Treat disc goes heavy on the special features. Dougherty returns for a brand new commentary (in addition to one of his previous commentary tracks). There are six new special features packed onto the release, alongside some of the best features from the previous Blu-ray and DVD releases. The cherry on top is the new Sam-centric cover art, which is also included as a separate poster.

You can order your copy of Trick ‘r Treat on 4K here, if they’re still in stock.

I know a lot of this sounds hyperbolic, but I wouldn’t write it if I didn’t believe in it. I am lucky enough to get sent a lot of physical releases to review and cover, so I’ve watched and played around with a good chunk of this year’s physical movies. I have yet to come across any that I’ve enjoyed quite as much as these two Arrow Video releases.

It really does make a difference when you can see and feel the love going into a physical movie. It amplifies your own love of that film, in a way. It’s like your adoration of a piece of art is enhanced when you get to experience firsthand that same adoration from others. It’s a beautiful thing. It’s also rather hopeful.

Isn’t that what movies are supposed to be?

The first two live-action Paddington films won over audiences not only with how charming the titular bear’s personality is, but also due to how he visually appeared in each adventure. No matter how cute you already thought Paddington was, though, a new trailer for Paddington in Peru offers a few glimpses of the character when he was a baby, which could make the upcoming third film the most adorable yet. With the new film set to take Paddington back to the jungles of Peru to reconnect with his aunt, it’s unclear how many scenes of baby Paddington we’ll get in the new movie, but we’ll take however much we can get. You can check out the new trailer for Paddington in Peru below before it lands in theaters on January 17, 2025.

The upcoming entry is described, “Get ready for the journey of a lifetime as Paddington in Peru brings the world’s most beloved bear back to his roots, his homeland Peru. Following the adventures of Paddington and Paddington 2, Paddington is still living happily with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens. When he receives a letter from the Reverend Mother, the blithe guitar-strumming nun who runs the Home for Retired Bears, informing him that Aunt Lucy misses him dearly, he knows he simply must visit her as soon as possible.”

“With his shiny new British passport in hand, Paddington is joined by the Browns, including the ever-resourceful Mrs. Bird, on an epic journey that none of them will ever forget. Along the way the group meet new friends, including the dashing riverboat captain Hunter and his daughter Gina. They join them on their thrilling escapades through the Amazon rainforest and up to the stunning mountain peaks of Peru. Together they encounter unexpected challenges, and Paddington begins to uncover surprising secrets about his past. Throughout the ups and downs, his unwavering optimism and kindness shine brightly in this brand-new Paddington cinematic adventure that reinforces the importance of family, and the joy of embracing one’s heritage.”

While it’s hard to imagine anyone with even a passing interest in Paddington might not have already seen the first two movies, this new trailer helps offer insight into what the beloved bear has already gotten up to in previous live-action adventures. The first two films have earned tremendous critical acclaim, as they earned 97% and 99% positive critical reactions on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. With the films’ box-office performance not directly aligning with critical reactions, fans have wondered what the future held for the series, but Paddington in Peru looks to merely be paving the way for a long live-action journey for the character.

Just last month, execs for the Paddington franchise confirmed that not only could fans anticipate a Paddington 4 on the way, but that there are also plans for a Paddington TV series. Those plans might not be fully concrete, but the execs teased we could be getting both the movie and the TV series in 2027 or 2028.

Stay tuned for updates on Paddington in Peru before it hits theaters on January 17, 2025.

Not long ago, filmmaker Greta Gerwig surprised Hollywood by announcing that she would follow up her Academy Award-nominated Barbie by launching a series of movies based on The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. Now, it appears those movies might get not only a theatrical release — but an IMAX release as well. IMAX is reportedly interested in screening Gerwig’s Narnia films, provided Netflix can come to terms on a deal. Of course, that has historically been a sticking point, since exhibitors generally ask Netflix for concessions that the streaming giant is not willing to give.

Netflix has limited its theatrical runs to short, narrow releases aimed at qualifying the movies for awards consideration. Netflix has also purchased some theaters to accommodate for this. Major theatrical chains tend to want a longer window of exclusivity than Netflix is willing to provide.

Bloomberg originally reported the rumor.

Netflix has kept their cards pretty close to the vest with plans for Narnia, although executives recently teased that the projects would be “bigger and bolder” than audiences expected. The streamer plans to adapt the entire seven-book series, and will spend a reported $175 million on the first installment.

Gerwig has reportedly committed to directing at least two of the movies.

“I’m slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for Narnia,” Gerwig told BBC Radio 4’s Today back in January. “I loved Narnia so much as a child. As an adult, C.S. Lewis is a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by doing this. It’s something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by.”

The filmmaker added, “As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly… it’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman.”

Between 2005 and 2010, Walden Media produced a trio of Chronicles of Narnia films, adapting less than half of the seven books. Critical and box office reception to the franchise was mixed, and after the first two, Walden parted ways with original distributor Disney and started to work with Fox. A fourth film never got off the ground, but since Disney bought Fox, fans can watch all three of the 2000s-era Narnia adaptations on Disney+.

If they are pretty close to the source material, there are two likely starting points for the franchise: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the first Narnia novel written by Lewis and the most famous installment of the franchise; and The Magician’s Nephew, the sixth novel Lewis wrote but, as a prequel. That’s the first in The Chronicles of Narnia chronologically, and the one Lewis preferred to be read first. The Magician’s Nephew has never been adapted into live-action (it was to be the next film made in the Fox series after The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but the rights lapsed), which would give Netflix something fresh for viewers to enjoy without drawing comparisons to past adaptations.

Alien Romulus VHS

It appears that the conversation about the death of physical media was a bit premature, because Blu-ray sales have been hot lately – especially when it comes to limited edition Steelbooks. Deadpool & Wolverine Steelbooks have been selling like crazy, and there have been super quick sellouts on releases like the Terminator 40th anniversary and Godzilla Minus One 4K Steelbooks. The Alien: Romulus 4K Steelbook has also been a big seller, but the question now is – how will the VHS release fare?

You heard that correctly. A VHS edition of Alien: Romulus exists, and you can pre-order it now here at Walmart for $59.96. It might also turn up here on Amazon in the near future. Keep in mind that this is a very limited edition release, and will undoubtedly sell out even at that price. It will arrive on your doorstep December 3rd. This is obviously a collector’s item, but if you actually own a VCR keep in mind that the VHS is fully functional. It also features some fantastic cover art by Matt Ferguson. Additional details about the VHS release are available here.

Alien: Romulus 4K Blu-ray Steelbook Edition

As for the Blu-ray releases, at the time of writing you can grab the Alien: Romulus 4K Blu-ray Steelbook, standard 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD options here on Amazon and here at Walmart. Again, the best Steelbook releases have a tendency to sell out, so reserve one while you can. It will arrive on December 3rd, which places it squarely in the holiday gift-giving zone. The list of bonus features includes the following:

  • DOLBY ATMOS AUDIO TRACK
  • Return to Horror: Crafting Alien: Romulus
    • The Director’s Vision – Discover how one of today’s greatest horror directors, Fede Alvarez, collaborated with master filmmaker Ridley Scott to craft a new, heart-pounding chapter in the Alien franchise.
    • Creating the Story – Learn what inspired the story of Alien: Romulus and see the many easter eggs from previous Alien installments that you may have missed.
    • Casting the Faces – Meet the stars of Alien: Romulus as they take us inside the hearts and minds of their characters. Explore the parallels between Rain and the iconic franchise heroine, Ripley, and learn how filmmakers brought back a face from the past.
    • Constructing the World – Explore the massive, practical sets of Alien: Romulus that hearken back to the futuristic style established in the ’80s and get up close and personal with a hoard of practically built facehuggers, chestbursters, and xenomorphs.
  • Inside the Xenomorph Showdown – Experience the film’s climactic zero-gravity sequence from every angle as filmmakers break down what it took to make the moment spectacular. From sets and performances, to wirework, stunts, and VFX, see how it all came together.
  • Alien: A Conversation – A special conversation with Ridley Scott and Fede Alvarez for the Alien 45th Anniversary theatrical re-release.
  • Alternate / Extended Scenes – Check out scenes that didn’t make the final cut.
  • Optional English SDH, Japanese S, Spanish, and French subtitles for the main feature

Another Alien Movie on the Way?

Given the strong box office performance of the film, it seems likely that another entry into the franchise.will happen, though nothing has been confirmed at this point. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, Alvarez was asked about a potential Romulus sequel. While it wasn’t on the forefront of his mind during the film, he definitely thought about ways the story could be extended after the fact.

“Yes, I definitely can. We tend to do that naturally, not even thinking about sequels. For us, movies have not become franchises, tentpoles, and sequels,” the director said. “This is a language that I’ve only learned in the last ten years of my life working here. For me, it’s always been about story. So, once we finished, we started thinking, ‘What do you think happens when or if they get to your Yvaga? Is it going to be great? Or is it a terrible place?’ We tend to believe it’s probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen. And then, a few minutes in, we go, ‘Oh, that sounds like a sequel.’

Halloween is finally upon us! For some, that means dressing up and going to parties or out trick-or-treating. For others, it means curling up on the couch, turning off all the lights, and sitting through a horror movie marathon. Heck, why not do both? If you’re a Netflix subscriber and you’re looking for something to send chills down your spine on the final day of Spooky Season, there are some great options for you to explore.

We decided to break down some of the best Netflix original horror films worth turning on this Halloween. Whether you’re into slashers or the supernatural, there’s something exciting to add to your watchlist as October comes to a close.

Non-Netflix Original Honorable Mentions

Before we get into some of Netflix’s best original horror movies, it’s worth mentioning some awesome horror films that are currently streaming on Netflix and are absolutely worth your time.

There are a couple of iconic horror options available on Netflix right now, including Jaws, The Birds, and Pyscho. Then there are a couple of modern classics-in-the-making you should check out. Movies like Pearl, The Babadook, and Creep.

If you’re into slashers, there are some solid options in the form of the 2018 Halloween reboot, the fifth Scream installment, and Eli Roth’s recent hit Thanksgiving. For something scary that’s a little more under-the-radar, check out 2014’s As Above So Below.

Fear Street Trilogy

Back in 2021, Netflix did something unprecedented when it released a series of films based on R. L. Stine’s Fear Street books. The streaming service released all three installments in the trilogy over the course of three consecutive weeks, allowing fans to experience the story together on a weekly basis (a lot like the traditional TV format that Netflix refuses to embrace).

The three Fear Street films — Fear Street Part 1: 1994, Fear Street Part 2: 1978, Fear Street Part 3: 1666 — tell one cohesive story about the residents of a cursed town called Shadyside. The story works backwards so you can see the origins of the curse and how it has affected the town over centuries, before bringing things back to 1994 to tie a nice bow around it all.

Apostle

Filmmaker Gareth Evans is best known for his hard-hitting action chops. His 2011 film The Raid: Redemption is often considered one of the best action movies of all time. Don’t let that fool you, though. He’s got a knack for horror.

In 2018, Evans partnered with Netflix to release a chilling folk-horror film called Apostle, which stars Dan Stevens as a man who gets tangled up in an eerie cult while trying to rescue his sister.

Gerald’s Game

The partnership between Netflix and filmmaker Mike Flanagan has been a fruitful one over the years. He has made acclaimed series for the streaming service like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. With so much focus on his TV titles, some may have missed the fact that Flanagan made one of the best Stephen King adaptations for Netflix a few years ago.

Gerald’s Game stars frequent Flanagan collaborators Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood as a married couple on a getaway at a lake house in the middle of nowhere. While handcuffed to the bed, the woman watches her husband die, and is faced with horrifying hallucinations as the tries to escape.

The Platform

Screenshot

The Platform 2 hit Netflix earlier this month and was a pretty big hit for a couple of weeks, but most viewers agreed that it doesn’t hold a candle to the quality of its predecessor.

Released back in 2020, The Platform is a dystopian horror-thriller about a vertical prison that lowers a massive display of food down hundreds of floors every single day. The people at the top eat their fill, while those at the bottom starve. It’s a blunt anti-capitalist message that will both thrill you and having you pondering its biggest questions days after you watch it.

It’s What’s Inside

Courtesy of Netflix

Released on the same day as The Platform 2, It’s What’s Inside is perhaps the best Netflix horror movie of the year.

This genre-bending body-swap thriller follows a group of college friends who play a dangerous game at a party the night before a wedding. As they start inhabiting one another’s bodies, secrets start coming to light. The entire thing erupts into a brilliantly chaotic third act that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

His House

If you’ve ever wondered what the best Netflix original horror film is, most critics and horror fans will tell you it’s His House.

Released in 2020, His House comes from director Remi Weekes and tells the story of a South Sudan couple who seek asylum in England, only to find out that something sinister is haunting their new home. If you want to be genuinely scared by a movie this Halloween, His House is the one to watch.

Deadpool & Wolverine streaming on Disney+

Deadpool and Wolverine are coming together — and coming to Disney+. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as best bubs Wade Wilson, the Merc with a Mouth, and Logan, the metal-clawed mutant known as the Wolverine, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine snikt’d the record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie at the global box office when it opened in theaters over the summer. After finishing its run with a haul of $1.3 billion, the only Marvel Cinematic Universe movie of 2024 will be streaming before you can say “Gubernatorial.”

Keep reading for more about when to stream Deadpool & Wolverine, where to watch the Deadpool movies in order, and the full list of what’s new on Disney+ in November 2024.

When does Deadpool and Wolverine come to Disney Plus?

You can watch Deadpool & Wolverine on Disney+ starting Tuesday, November 12.

Disney+ subscriptions start at $9.99 per month (Disney+ Basic with ads) or $15.99 per month for Disney+ Premium (no ads). Other options include the $10.99/mo plan (Disney Bundle Duo Basic: Disney+ with ads and Hulu with ads), $19.99/mo (Disney Bundle Duo Premium: ad-free Disney+ and Hulu), $16.99/mo (Disney Bundle Trio Basic, which includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ with ads), or the priciest plan at $26.99/mo (Disney Bundle Trio Premium for ad-free Disney+ and Hulu, and ESPN+ with ads). In addition, subscribers can bundle Disney+, Hulu, and Max with ads for $16.99/mo, or Disney+, Hulu, and Max with no ads for $29.99/mo.

Where to watch Deadpool & Wolverine without Disney+

If you don’t have a Disney+ subscription, you can watch Deadpool & Wolverine online by buying the digital version for $19.99 on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) or Apple TV+. The digital release includes hours of special features, like a gag reel, deleted scenes, and an audio commentary with Reynolds and director Shawn Levy.

How to watch the Deadpool movies in order

The X-Men movies timeline can be confusing, but Deadpool & Wolverine largely ignores the events of the XCU and the MCU. If you want to watch Deadpool in release order, then the order is: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Deadpool (2016), Deadpool 2 (2018), and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).

If you want to watch Deadpool & Wolverine in timeline order, the order is Deadpool, Logan, Deadpool 2, and then Deadpool & Wolverine, which takes place after the events of Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine movie.

How long is Deadpool & Wolverine?

Deadpool & Wolverine has a runtime of 128 minutes, or 2 hours and 8 minutes.

Does Deadpool & Wolverine have a post-credits scene?

Yes, you’ll want to watch through the credits for a tribute to the Fox-made Marvel movies and a post-credits gag.

Who is in the Deadpool & Wolverine cast?

The cast includes Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool; Hugh Jackman as the “worst Wolverine,” a Logan variant from an alternate timeline and the last-surviving member of the X-Men; Matthew Macfadyen as TVA Agent Paradox; and Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, twin sister of Professor Charles Xavier.

In addition to Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Rob Delaney as Peter, Karan Soni as Dopinder, and Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, the Deadpool & Wolverine cast includes (spoilers): Dafne Keen as Laura, a.k.a. X-23; Jennifer Garner as the lethal Elektra; Wesley Snipes as Blade, the vampire hunter; Channing Tatum as Gambit, a card-carrying mutant member of the X-Men; and Chris Evans as Johnny Storm/Human Torch of the Fantastic Four.

Before filmmaker Mike Flanagan would put his mark on Netflix with hit shows like The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher he started his career-long trend of adapting Stephen King. Netflix is no stranger to Stephen King adaptations, having produced the likes of In the Tall Grass, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, and 1922, but none as impressive as this, since it was with a book that should have been impossible. The film that not only secured Flanagan’s place at Netflix but got him in the door as the go-to Stephen King guy is not only the streamer’s best adaptation of the master of horror, but one long considered unfilmable, 2017’s Gerald’s Game

Gerald’s Game the novel was published in 1992, and despite being considered a futile story to attempt to adapt, the story is pretty much the same from book to film. It tells the story of Jessie Burlingame (Carla Gugino in the film) and her husband Gerald (Bruce Greenwood), who take a weekend trip to their lake home in Maine. As far as the title goes, Gerald’s “game” is when he handcuffs his wife to the bed ahead of having sex with her, but once she’s tied down it becomes clear that he intends to take part in a rape fantasy while she’s immobilized. Distraught by this development however, Jessie tries to get out and begins yelling at her husband. The confrontation results in probably the worst possible outcome as Gerald has a heart attack and dies right there while Jessie remains tied up.

As the story unfolds, Jessie remains tied to the bed and begins to hallucinate any number of people appearing and speaking to her, including not only her child self but an alternate version of herself, plus former friends from her life. Another mysterious figure also appears in the house as she begins to succumb to delirium, a ghostly apparition that shows her his basket of trinkets and human bones.

This is in large part why the book was considered unfilmable. Most of the book takes place in one room with a character that can’t even leave the spot that she’s confined to where she’s largely having conversations with herself and recalling her traumatic past. Not to mention, the other characters that appear may not even be real. Flanagan has not been shy about the challenges of making this work, not to mention being fully aware that this adaptation was a major hurdle.

“I’ve wanted to make this story since I was 19. I’m a Stephen King fanatic. When I was in college I read the book and thought it was amazing but unfilmable. Half my life I’ve been trying to make this movie,” Flanagan previously told The Independent. “We had to find a mechanism to make the story cinematic while being faithful to the story, which is a beautiful story. In the book, Gerald’s dead and gone by page 10 and the rest of the book takes place entirely in Jessie’s head. It’s a stream of consciousness. The trick for us was trying to make that visually interesting. What we came up with was keeping Gerald — played by Bruce Greenwood — in the movie by taking that inner monologue and making it an outer monologue. It was really hard.”

To his credit, his plan clearly worked, as Gerald’s Game is one of the highest rated horror movies on Netflix (plus far and away their best rated Stephen King adaptation). As of this writing Gerald’s Game is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes and carries a 91% approval rating, with praise not only for Carla Gugino’s performance but Flanagan’s ability to adapt the unadaptable.

The success of Gerald’s Game would also make way for Mike Flanagan to flex his muscles not only as a visual storyteller but to prove how well he understood King. After Gerald’s Game Flanagan’s next feature film would be 2019’s Doctor Sleep, another novel from the author that it was assumed would never see the big screen. Earlier this year he rolled out his latest Stephen King movie too, the upcoming The Life of Chuck, which won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. In the not-too-distant future Flanagan will return to King twice over, adapting Carrie into a limited TV series and bringing The Dark Tower to life in a series of interconnected movies and shows.

Joker: Folie á Deux may have bombed at the box office as well as with audiences and critics alike, but the follow up to 2019’s Joker has a fan in Quentin Tarantino. During an appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast (via Variety), Tarantino had high praise for Joker 2, commenting not only that he “really really liked it” but also calling the film’s director Todd Phillips the real joker for delivering a “f-ck you” to comic book geeks, Hollywood, DC, and Warner Bros as well.

“I really, really liked it, really. A lot. Like, tremendously, and I went to see it expecting to be impressed by the filmmaking,’ Tarantino said. “But I thought it was going to be an arms-length, intellectual exercise that ultimately I wouldn’t think worked like a movie, but that I would appreciate it for what it is. And I’m just nihilistic enough to kind of enjoy a movie that doesn’t quite work as a movie or that’s like a big, giant mess to some degree. And I didn’t find it an intellectual exercise. I really got caught up into it. I really liked the musical sequences. I got really caught up. I thought the more banal the songs were, the better they were. I find myself listening to the lyrics of ‘For Once in My Life’ in a way I never have before.”

“The Joker directed the movie. The entire concept, even him spending the studio’s money — he’s spending it like the Joker would spend it, all right?” Tarantino said about Phillips being the real “joker” of the sequel film. “And then his big surprise gift — haha! — the jack-in-the-box, when he offers you his hand for a handshake and you get a buzzer with 10,000 volts shooting you — is the comic book geeks. He’s saying f-ck you to all of them. He’s saying f-ck you to the movie audience. He’s saying f-ck you to Hollywood. He’s saying f-ck you to anybody who owns any stock at DC and Warner Bros. … And Todd Phillips is the Joker. Un film de Joker, all right, is what it is. He is the Joker.”

[RELATED: No, Joker: Folie à Deux Is Not a Dark Knight Prequel]

Tarantino’s comments are a bit of a contrast to his thoughts about 2019’s Joker. The filmmaker previously said that the first film was “a little one-note” and made commentary about the film’s referencing of ‘70s films such as Taxi Driver, questioning at the time “Is this where we live now? Take great movies from the ‘70s and redo them as pop-cultural artifacts?” That said, he did have significant praise for the film’s talks how scene, which he praised at the time for its subversiveness — specifically “subversion on a massive level”.  Comparing the two reactions to the two films, it would seem that what Tarantino is most appreciative of with the Joker films are their approaches to the audience by not doing what one would expect – and sees him coming around to the idea that both films are, ultimately, good.

It would also seem that Tarantino is homing in on what, for some, is the real point of
Joker: Folie á Deux and that is to serve as an antidote for the hype around the film and the character, hype that started with the first Joker film and only seemed to intensify as expectation for the sequel grew. As we have noted before, the Joker sequel is as much social commentary as it is commentary on entertainment itself and the gap between reality and pop-culture obsession, especially with Joker. If nothing else, it certainly makes for an interesting lens with which to look at the film beyond what one may have expected – and one that may well ultimately see viewers revisiting their own thoughts about Joker: Folie a Deux, coming around to see the film as more than originally considered.

Phantasm (1979).

Some people make it a tradition every Halloween to watch a certain movie, like John Carpenter’s 1978 slasher Halloween, or Michael Dougherty’s anthology film Trick ‘r Treat. Given the season it’s not uncommon for horror fans to annually revisit the likes of Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, or any other seasonal favorites. For me though, it’s Don Coscarelli’s 1979 movie Phantasm, which immediately puts me in the Halloween mood early in the season and which I already have the itch to watch again despite it not being set on the holiday at all. Thanks to the nightmare imagery at its core, a killer soundtrack, and a plot that is as captivating as it is indecipherable, Phantasm is an easy pick for this time of year.

Phantasm’s opening scene immediately tells the audience what kind of movie it really is, because it confirms that it will not be going in any direction you expect. A young man named Tommy has been seduced by a woman into a sexual encounter in, where else, a graveyard. In the midst of their tryst she takes out a knife and stabs him, with a quick cut revealing that this sultry young woman is not a young woman at all, but instead the local mortician who we will come to know as The Tall Man. This isn’t spelled out with any grand special effect or magical transformation; just two quick cuts by Coscarelli reveal the secret. The film is not only revealing that you cannot expect anything normal within Phantasm, nor trust what your eyes see, but that a storyteller with a full command of his narrative is behind the camera.

Young Mike (Michael Baldwin) is confronted by the nefarious Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) in Phantasm.

Tommy’s death kicks off the larger plot of Phantasm which follows Mike Pearson, a young boy who finds himself in a bit of daze. After his parents death, he was placed in the custody of his older brother Jody, who would prefer to be getting up to things that a young man is eager to take part in than look after his younger brother in a parental capacity. Mike is desperately attached to his brother, but Jody openly ponders sending him away so he can live his own life. Their relationship becomes the main crux of one of the movie’s larger themes, coming to terms with death through leaning on others.

As Jody and his pal Reggie (the ponytail-sporting, ice cream-selling comic relief of the franchise) attend the funeral, Mike watches them from a distance, always eager to keep his brother in his sights in case he decides to finally up and leave town one day. While spying on them, Mike sees unlikely images unfold around him in the graveyard as dwarven figures wearing black hoods pass between the headstones just out of his peripheral vision, culminating in the moment where he sees The Tall Man lift up Tommy’s coffin by himself and place it in the back of the hearse.

Having witnessed all this, Mike becomes obsessed with figuring out what The Tall Man is up to, prompting him to do more sleuthing. After breaking into the funeral home and its adjacent mausoleum at night, Mike encounters the third horrifying piece of imagery that is nestled into Phantasm, the tiny chrome sphere that flies through the air and drills its way into the head of anyone that crosses its path. An unlucky caretaker at the cemetery gets a new hole in his forehead after it slams into the space between his eyes and sends blood flying all around. The death is not only gruesome, but wholly unique.

Phantasm (1979)

(As a side note, JJ Abrams apparently loves Phantasm so much that he was a driving force behind getting the movie remastered a few years ago. He even went on to create the Star Wars: The Force Awakens character Captain Phasma in reference to it. Now, what did she look like again?)

Though the flying sphere is maybe Phantasm’s most notable addition to pop culture, it’s Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man that is its most iconic nightmare fuel. Standing at 6’4”, Scrimm’s subtle mannerisms, long stride, and guttural delivery of the iconic “Booooooy!” are just some of the elements in his performance that make The Tall Man feel not only fully realized but memorable. In a world where the genre was dominated by masked killers using whatever household items they could find to get kills, a dignified older man whose defining characteristic is primarily that he’s just tall is already enough of a reason to make him stand out. Couple that with how Scrimm didn’t take his role lightly and you’ve got one of the most underrated movie villains of all-time, and he can be found in all five of the Phantasm movies.

This is where I draw the line at revealing what Phantasm has in store for you, because ruining its biggest surprises to a fresh audience member feels criminal. It’s also why it has become such a seasonal treat that feels ripe for repeat viewing in October; it’s all in the experience. There’s not only a human story at the center of Phantasm, but its outer shell is a surreal nightmare that Don Coscarelli masterfully brings to life. Fans will also find themselves quietly jamming to the film’s score from composers Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave, a dreamlike melody that manages to keep your hair on edge while also making you wonder how much of what you’re seeing is real.

Phantasm offers a lot of meat to chew on, not only from the imagery that feels like it was plucked directly from our subconscious fears but its clear thematic arc and fresh characters. In the end though, it’s also a film that’s just fun as hell to watch. Will Phantasm always make sense to you? Perhaps not. But when the characters themselves are this likable and real, you can buy into supernatural happenings around them. You have to just buy the ticket and enjoy the ride.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania was supposed to be a pivotal launching point for the next chapter of the MCU, as in addition to being the third film in an already successful series it was also introducing the next epic Marvel Universe threat in Kang. Unfortunately the film failed to deliver on those expectations, both in terms of building out the MCU and in financial returns. A new report from Forbes sheds further light on the financial impact of the film though, revealing that it actually made even less than what was initially thought.

The Actual Profit

While pure numbers aren’t always easy to come by regarding studio films, things get a little easier when they film in the UK. That’s because there’s a popular tax credit called the AVEC (Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit), which gives the studio a cash reimbursement of up to 25.5% of they spend there. That means they need to have at least 10% of the production costs relate to activities in the UK, and they have to prove those expenses for the reimbursement process through financial statements.

From those financial statements and details, Forbes broke down just how much Disney was reimbursed for Ant Man and The Wasp Quantumania, and that amount came out to $58.3 million. This brought down the cost of the film from $388.4 million to $330.1 million, but once factored into the final tax and profit analysis, shows that the actual net profit for the film was $88.236 million.

The box office total was a drop from the previous film, as Ant-Man and The Wasp brought in a worldwide box office total of $622,674,139 million, while the original Ant-Man also bested it with a worldwide box office of $519,311,965 million. With this being the third film in the franchise and the much anticipated debut of Kang, it was thought Quantumania would easily blow by both of those totals, but that ultimately wasn’t the case.

“Absolutely Chaotic”

While reactions weren’t great, there was apparently also some chaos during production according to Jentorra star Kay O’Brian. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, O’Brian joked “That was absolutely chaotic. I think we were getting new pages until the last day, and I think I was getting new fights the last day. I just show up, and they’re like, ‘Here’s a new fight.'”

While things could have been more streamlined and less frantic, O’Brian still enjoyed the experience, especially in regards to the cast. “I thought me being this kind of like newbie, they might, I don’t know, either ignore me or I would just feel out of place, but they just always made it as welcoming as possible. I was surprised by that environment.”

Ant-Man and The Wasp” Quantumania is now streaming on Disney+.

If you’re filmmaker Adam Wingard or actors Dan Stevens or Maika Monroe, you’re having a pretty good year. Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire became the highest-grossing Godzilla movie of all time, Stevens starred in genre hits Abigail and Cuckoo (in addition to Godzilla x Kong), and Monroe starred in Longlegs, which has become one of the most talked-about horror movies of the year. This year also marks the tenth anniversary of The Guest, directed by Wingard and starring Stevens and Monroe, which marks ten years of passionate fans asking for another entry in the genre-bending and Halloween-themed adventure.

The Guest follows the mysterious David (Stevens) as he visits the family of a fallen military friend, aiming to offer assistance in a challenging time. David is handsome, charming, and a help around the house, as he manages to even win over even the wary sister Anna (Monroe). Aiming to learn more about him, Anna uncovers some conflicts in David’s story, with her investigation inadvertently kicking off an action-packed confrontation that reveals David’s true nature.

In 2011, Wingard and writer Simon Barrett unleashed the home-invasion horror movie You’re Next, which injected plenty of laughs into its terror and won over festivalgoers at the Toronto International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. The movie was purchased by Lionsgate, though as the distributor developed a release strategy, the buzz around You’re Next made it feel like a forgotten masterpiece locked in a vault. It wasn’t until two years later that the movie got a theatrical release, and while it might not have become a blockbuster, it helped build a following for Wingard and Barrett’s unique takes on genre storytelling.

The pair reunited for The Guest, whose festival screenings and (albeit lackluster) theatrical release have earned it 92% positive reviews from critics, according to aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, marking the highest score of their careers. The movie was inspired by Barrett’s background as a private investigator, which saw him uncover all manner of unexpected secrets about clients, as well as Wingard’s random revisiting of the movies Halloween and The Terminator. Its initial, underwhelming release on audiences meant it flew under most viewers’ radars, though anyone who caught the movie on streaming services over the years resulted in it feeling like a true discovery to newcomers.

The Guest has earned acclaim for a variety of reasons, one of which is the charm and charisma of Stevens. His role as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey earned him fans, but The Guest opened up his talents to an entirely new audience. Monroe managed to capture the sarcasm of a young adult who is doubtful of the strange figure yet who is also drawn to his magnetism, and her role in the horror sensation It Follows within that same year cemented her as an up-and-coming “It Girl” for genre stories. The rest of the cast, which includes Brendan Meyer, Sheila Kelley, Leland Orser, and the late Lance Henriksen, all created the necessary blend of warmth and openness necessary to convey the gravity of the situation thrust upon them.

Much like You’re Next, The Guest manages to tonally and visually dip its toes into a number of genre pools, running the gamut of sci-fi, horror, thriller, action, and comedy from one scene to the next. This is a credit not only to Wingard, Barrett, and the cast’s individual contributions to the project, but also to the alchemy they all created together to help concoct an adventure that both felt familiar for fans of ’80s cinema and also entirely fresh. Additionally, the film’s score was crafted by Steve Moore of the band Zombi, while the soundtrack included music from Clan of Xymox, Gatekeeper, Survive, and Love and Rockets, all of which amplified its throwback tone.

One reason The Guest gains so much attention in October is for how unconventional of a Halloween movie it assuredly is. With the movie being filmed in New Mexico, it doesn’t embrace the traditional iconography of crunchy leaves and grey skies of other Halloween-centric movies, which might be why the filmmakers were so intentional about the way the holiday is integrated into the narrative. When David and Anna attend a party together, it’s a Halloween party with expected decorations and costumes. A key scene sees David carving pumpkins with Luke (Meyer) where David uses his own knife, which he gifts to Luke, only for Luke to use it later in the film. The entire final showdown between David, Anna, and Luke unfolds at a high school decorated for a Halloween dance, which includes fog, strobe lights, and spooky decorations (including oversized decor honoring Halloween III: Season of the Witch).

As if the overall experience isn’t enough to make it a contemporary classic, its Halloween relevance results in annual viewings from fans, which only amplifies the demands for a sequel. Virtually any good movie will see subsets of fans asking for a sequel, while David’s mysterious backstory and The Guest‘s open-ended finale keep the doors open for future adventures either with these characters specifically or just set in this world. Even though Wingard, Barrett, Stevens, and Monroe have all gone on to make multiple other compelling projects, virtually every promotional circuit for a new endeavor results in them being asked about a sequel, as they all tease their interest in such a reunion.

Fan demands for more The Guest might not have all been for naught, though, as the figures involved in the series teased in 2021 and in early 2022 that something was gestating, which led to the debut of The Guest 2 (Original Soundtrack) on April 1, 2022. The album featured music from Wingard, Moore, and various other contributors, with the track titles embracing the overall trajectory of what Wingard and Barrett saw as the next chapter for the saga. Including songs titled “The Guest Returns,” “Grim Showdown,” “Carver’s War Machine,” and “David vs. The Splinters of the Cross,” these narrative teases might be the closest we get to a live-action sequel.

Every year that passes, The Guest finds more fans, and regardless of what projects they move onto, the cast and crew of the film continue to be asked about getting more of this sci-fi world. Luckily, even if we never get more of the movie, getting one such compelling story in the first place is already enough of a win and we’re happy to have such an unlikely project to add to the list of annual Halloween watches.

The Guest is currently available to rent on digital platforms.

With the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe set to begin next year with the arrival of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, there’s been a lot of speculation about what’s next when it comes next — especially in terms of the Avengers films. The next two Avengers films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars aren’t set to arrive until 2026 and 2027 respectively with both films being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, but that hasn’t stopped fans from asking some big questions, such as could we see a return of the biggest Marvel villain to date, Thanos. Now, speaking with Collider, Thanos actor Josh Brolin is addressing the possibility revealing that he has one condition to returning as the Mad Titan — the character has to fit.

“I’m not kidding — there’s a thing with playing Thanos. It’s like, ‘Oh, they’re gonna bring Thanos back.’ It’s like Sicario; it has to be right,” Brolin said. “It’s like Ryan Reynolds and I talking about Taylor Swift and we should be talking about Deadpool 4. But we go back and forth. Again, it’s what in his mind fits, what in my mind fits. Thanos has to fit if you’re going to bring him back. I would do anything that the Russos wanted me to do.”

Brolin’s condition does make a good bit of sense. After all, Thanos met his end in Avengers: Endgame (twice, technically, once when Thor decapitates him after the surviving heroes track him down and try to get the Infinity Stones to undo the events of Infinity War and then again at the end of Endgame when Tony Stark sacrifices himself with a new snap.) The villain’s death was a significant and powerful moment for the franchise so bringing him back in any capacity would have to similarly have meaning and “fit” with the story being told in the next Avengers films.  That said, the opportunity to create that fit is there when one looks to the comics. In Marvel’s Secret Wars comics, Thanos is a part of the storyline which sees Doctor Doom seizing power. That said, it doesn’t seem like Thanos’ involvement in the story would be particularly expansive, though at this point everything is speculation until more concrete details about plans for not just Avengers: Secret Wars but Avengers: Doomsday start to come to light.

avengers-infinity-war-thanos-snap-gauntlet.jpg

As for Brolin, he has made comments about returning as Thanos before. Earlier this year, he told ComicBook that he didn’t know if they would bring Thanos back, though he had heard some things “through the grapevine”.

“You know, I hear kind of like through the grapevine, that they’re gonna bring him back,” Brolin said at the time. “And there’s the What If…? series and that’s a different kind of Thanos and all that. But I don’t know in the Marvel world whether they’re going to bring him back, but I didn’t know that he was the most killed-off Marvel villain …. You learn something new every day.”

As for the future of the Avengers movies more broadly, Joe Russo recently suggested that Avengers: Doomsday will be as game-changing as both Infinity War and Endgame, suggesting that whatever is coming with the eagerly anticipated film when it arrives in 2026 will be huge.

“We’re all very close,” Russo said about the connection with Robert Downey Jr, who is returning to the MCU for Doomsday not as Tony Stark/Iron Man but as Doctor Doom. “We had been working on another project before Marvel approached all of us — so we’re working on another project with Robert — and there was a story that evolved through conversations that we got very excited about. Because it’s always got to be the story.”

He continued, “Why would we come back if we didn’t feel like we had a story that had a possibility of being on an equal footing with Infinity War and Endgame unless there’s a kernel there for an idea that’s really explosive?”

Avengers: Doomsday is presently scheduled to open in theaters on May 1, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is presently scheduled to follow on May 7, 2027.

Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed in Heretic

The new horror movie Heretic features Hugh Grant as “Mr. Reed,” a reclusive man living in a house that holds some dark secrets. When two Mormon girls acting as missionaries show up on Reed’s doorstep, he lures them into a dark test of their faith that could also be a test of life and death. The film’s trailers have gotten audiences hooked on directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ (writers of A Quiet Place) atmospheric dread, and the tease of a deliciously unhinged performance from Hugh Grant.

ComicBook got the chance to sit down and talk with Woods and Beck about Heretic; during that conversation, the director duo revealed some of the real-life figures that influenced the character of Mr. Reed:

“Yeah I mean definitely from a cult standpoint we were thinking about Jim Jones with the Jonestown Massacre; Keith Raniere and the NXIVM cult,” Beck explained. “All of these people who are fairly charismatic and you enter into this organization at first thinking it’s going to better your life, and then it perverts itself over the course of time.”

“Yeah, also he was inspired by great atheist thinkers,” Woods added. “Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins: he’s an amalgamation of 30 different real-life people and then you bring Hugh into the conversation and Hugh is such a brilliant mind. He had a lot of ideas as well about who the character connects to. It was so fun to work with him.”

Do you like Scary Movie? More than two decades after spoofing such films as 1996’s Scream, 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, and 1999’s The Blair Witch Project, the Wayans brothers are bringing the horror parody back to life with Scary Movie 6. The new installment in the franchise — which has starred Anna Farris, Regina Hall, Shawn and Marlon Wayans, Simon Rex, Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, and more — will reunite series creators Shawn, Marlon, and Keenen Ivory Wayans, who are writing with Rick Alvarez (A Haunted House and Sextuplets).

The Scary Movie sequel will shoot in 2025 for a theatrical release from Miramax and Paramount, which acquired Dimension Films and the Scary Movie franchise in 2020.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago,” the Wayans said in a statement confirming their first Scary Movie since the R-rated Scary Movie 2 in 2001. “We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”

Ready to die laughing after watching the Halloween movies in order and streaming October’s new horror movies? Then read on to find out where to watch every Scary Movie online, and which movies are parodied in each installment.

Nothing’s sacred and anything goes in this outlandish must-see comedy hit that takes your love for sequels too far. Anna Farris, Regina Hall, Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans star with Tim Curry (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Chris Elliott (Schitt’s Creek), Tori Spelling (Beverly Hills, 90210), Chris Masterson (Malcolm in the Middle), and David Cross (Arrested Development).

She soon uncovers an outrageous onslaught of globe-threatening developments including alien invaders, killer videotapes, freaky crop circles, prophecies of The One, eerie-eyed children, ambitious white rappers and even a run-in with Michael Jackson. Faced with conspiracies of massive proportions, and a crew of very strange people following her around, Cindy must fight to stop evil from taking over the world yet again.

Directed by David Zucker (Airplane!), the threequel stars Charlie Sheen, Anna Faris, Eddie Griffin, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, and and features Pamela Anderson (Baywatch), comedian George Carlin, Leslie Nielsen (Naked Gun), and a who’s who of rap legends, including RZA and Method Man.

Scary Movie 4 (2006)

The ever-naïve Cindy Campbell (Farris), seeking a career in home healthcare, finds work with a creepy old lady (Cloris Leachman) in an even creepier old house haunted by a ghostly presence. Throw in a good-looking guy next door and the threat of aliens intent on global domination and Cindy’s instantly up to the top of her extremely blond head in danger. Our fearless heroine catapults into action once again struggling to decipher ominous messages from the beyond, looking for love in some very weird places and trying to save the world from mass destruction. As she struggles to discover life-saving answers, Cindy encounters horrific plane crashes, bodacious blind girls, village idiots, disheveled rappers, kinky contraptions, psycho survivalists, alien sphincters and even Oprah!

Venom is at it again. Not long ago, Venom: The Last Dance made its debut, and it was there fans watched the unexpected come to life. Eddie Brock’s made sure his return to the big screen wouldn’t fly under the radar. It is hard to ignore the insanity that is Venom’s new movie, and for good measure, the blockbuster locked in an anime collab that no one saw coming.

The whole thing came to light this week as Venom: The Last Dance went live in the United States. The movie, which is the third Venom has welcomed with Sony Pictures, has been a trip. Over in Japan, Eddie and his symbiote partner were eager to plug their comeback, so the pair negotiated not one but two different anime deals.

Venom Collides With the World of Anime

As for the first deal? Venom comes face to face with Brave Bang Bravern. The anime went live this year as part of the Brave franchise, and Venom is now linking up with the show. As you can see below, a promo was released in Japan for Brave Bang Bravern that shows its stars watching Venom: The Last Dance. In return, the Marvel movie posted a promo of its own, and it shows the character Isami being interrogated about the movie after watching it in theaters.

For the second anime deal, we have GeGeGe no Kitaro to thank. The classic anime posted a key visual that combines Venom: The Last Dance with The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe. Toko Yatabe, the current designer behind GeGeGe no Kitaro, posted a note about the wild crossover after being asked to tackle Venom. It turns out the artist never saw the collab coming, but he is grateful to work with an IP as diverse as Marvel.

“I never thought Venom and The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe would collaborate! I was surprised when I first heard about it, but when I heard the catchphrase, ‘Our Partners Are Not Human,’ I thought, ‘I see!’ Both movies are exciting stories about different species of buddies who rely on each other to save the world, so please enjoy Venom: The Last Dance and The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe this fall,” the artist shared.

What Happens When Anime Becomes Marketing Tool?

Clearly, Venom: The Last Dance looked around when making its anime deals, and the promotions are now live overseas. No one would have expected the Marvel series to team with Brave Bang Bravern, but that is the beauty of Venom. The symbiote rarely does what we expect, and that is true whether we’re talking canon or not.

The blockbuster is also just one of many to lean into anime when promoting itself in Japan. Countless films have launched cross-promotions when facing the Japanese market. Not long ago, Dandadan stirred buzz when creator Tatsu Yukinobu collaborated with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. From the Star Wars franchise to Frozen and more, the trend is only growing. For years, these collaborations were sequestered overseas, but the rise of anime globally has raised their public profile. The Internet is more than happy to route these PR deals, and Venom: The Last Dance is the latest movie to take center stage.

As anime continues to grow, you can expect these cross promotions to grow in kind. Hollywood knows the power of anime, after all. The industry makes billions each year, and most importantly, it appeals to a key demographic. With Gen Z and Gen Alpha eating up anime, the industry has given Hollywood a new tool to reach younger audiences. Venom: The Last Dance is not the first blockbuster to take advantage of that optic, and it is not going to be the last.

What do you make of this latest Hollywood collaboration? Did you see this Venom promo coming? Give me a shout at @meganwpeters with your take! You can also let us know what you think over on X (Twitter) and Instagram.

Seven 4K UltraHD Steelbook

David Fincher fans, listen up… Universal Pictures’ relatively new DVD website GRUV has just put up an all-new 4K UltraHD limited edition Blu-ray Steelbook of Seven (or Se7en), the iconic 1995 crime drama starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Gwenyth Paltrow. The cover design appears to based on the end of the chase scene in the rain when John Doe confronts David Mills, which is an interesting choice. The Blu-ray is available to pre-order now right here at GRUV for $29.99, though you might be able to use the code SIGNUP20 at checkout to bring the price down to $23.99. You might also find it here on Amazon in the coming days.

Seven has definitely solidified itself in film history, now considered in some lists as one of the best of all-time. David Fincher has also gone on to do big things in the years since. His impressive catalog also includes directing credits on other iconic films such as: Fight Club, Gone Girl, The Social Network and Zodiac. His talents have gone beyond the silver screen, landing him a deal with Netflix, where he created Mindhunter, one of the most beloved series in recent memory. And, if your taste is similar to mine, you’re probably also wishing that it had been greenlit for a third season.

With Fincher’s popularity having grown so spectacularly since, it’s no wonder that Seven has remained so prominent in audiences memories (besides, it’s the kind of movie that sticks with you). Earlier this year, a Se7en 4K Blu-ray Collector’s Edition was released that also completely sold out, so you’ll want to keep that in mind with regard to the new Steelbook edition.

Crazy final acts became a staple for Fincher, a director who works particularly well with high tension scenarios. From the final explosion in Fight Club, to that one famous scene with Andrew Garfield in The Social Network (you know the one), and the horrible moment of realization from Brad Pitt of what was in the box at the end of Seven, Fincher has given film fans something to remember forever, even if it’s only in our nightmares.

Indeed, this is one of the most memorable films ever made, and frequently considered to have one of the most haunting finales in film history. Brad Pitt’s charisma and style shine as he takes on the role of a hotheaded bad boy, while Morgan Freeman delivers one of the best renditions of a haggard detective, ready to get out of the game for good.

Teri Garr, the Academy Award-nominated actress and singer behind iconic roles in movies like Young Frankenstein and Tootsie, has died. She was 79 years old. Garr passed away due to complications from multiple sclerosis after a long fight with the disease, according to Variety, who first reported the news.

Garr has been working in Hollywood since the 1960s, appearing in uncredited roles in Elvis Presley movies and an episode of Batman. Over time, her roles started to grow a little, with minor appearances in shows like The Andy Griffith Show, That Girl, and Star Trek. Her first significant role as in Head, a movie featuring The Monkees. Ironically, right after that she would head back to Mayberry for a brief role in Mayberry R.F.D.

Within a few years, Garr became a recurring guest on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, and that visibility led her to a new round of appearances on hit shows like M*A*S*H, The Odd Couple, The Bob Newhart Show, and Barnaby Jones.

The first role that most contemporary audiences would likely remember her for was that of Inga in Young Frankenstein. The 1974 movie has become a comedy staple, cementing her legacy almost as much as Tootsie, the movie for which she earned her Oscar nomination.

In between those movies, she appeared in episodes of McCloud and Maude, and then recurred on The Sonny and Cher Show, continuing her long relationship with the celebrity couple.

Beginning in the late 1970s, Garr’s star rose further, playing key roles in hits like Oh, God! and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. She combined mainstream hits like The Black Stallion and The Sting II with appearances on iconic TV shows like Saturday Night Live and Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre.

In the 1980s, Garr went on to star opposite Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie, and opposite Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom. She had a small role in the music video for Ray Parker, Jr.’s mega-hit “Ghostbusters” song, and showed up in After Hours, on Sesame Street, and in a number of smaller roles in film and TV.

Garr’s diverse career gave her chances to star in serious dramas, loopy comedies, kids’ shows, and everything n between. In the 1990s, she went from Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme to Tales From the Crypt to playing herself in The Player within two years. By the middle of the decade, she was a proper comedy icon, appearing in things like Dumb and Dumber, Frasier, The Weird Al Show, and Friends (in which she played Phoebe Abbott Sr).

More than 30 years after her brief appearance in the 1960s Batman, Garr returned to the DC Universe to play Mary McGinniss in Batman Beyond: The Movie, then reprised the role on the TV show and in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.

Garr was diagnosed with MS in 1999, and her work slowed down in the 2000s. She made a final comic book movie appearance in Ghost World, did some voice acting in a couple of different takes on Scooby-Doo!, and scored roles in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Unaccompanied Minors. Her last credited work was in 2011’s How To Marry a Billionaire.

Our thoughts go out to Ms Garr’s family, friends, colleagues, and fans during this difficult time.

In the years since a Trick ‘r Treat sequel was initially announced, director Michael Dougherty has been busy with other projects like Krampus and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but despite the delays, the filmmaker claims that fans shouldn’t give up hope entirely. On the film’s recent 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release, per Bloody Disgusting, Dougherty shares in a commentary track that the main reason for the delay is he doesn’t want to have to make any sacrifices or compromises that would impact his vision for the experience, and that he’s quite happy with the current version of the script. As far as whether there has been any significant momentum on the sequel since he recorded the commentary track is yet to be seen.

“I want to do it. It’s not dead by any stretch. We have some momentum moving in the right direction for sure, but I’m also of the belief that I’m not going to compromise or make sacrifices just to make a sequel,” Dougherty shared on the commentary track, according to the outlet. “It has to be under the right conditions with the right resources. Otherwise, I will be content with just letting this be this weird little movie that fought its way through a lot of adversity.”

He added, “But I’m very, very happy with the script for the sequel.”

The original movie was released in 2009 and served as a tribute to All Hallow’s Eve, as it blended humor with horror to deliver an anthology experience celebrating all manner of traditions honoring October 31st. At the time, streaming platforms hadn’t established themselves as avenues to watch movies, so Trick ‘r Treat was relegated to only earning a home video debut as opposed to either a major theatrical rollout or streaming debut. The movie’s sporadic streaming availability in the years since, however, has seen it earn a passionate following, leading to enthusiasm for another entry.

“It’s tricky, because I think we really did capture lightning in a bottle with this one, and it nearly killed me. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially the ones that introduced new horror icons, were all independent movies,” Dougherty detailed on the disc, while citing other indie hits like Halloween and Friday the 13th. “There aren’t the typical metrics that a studio can point to to make it an easy ‘yes.’ Something I was adamant about in the sequel was that it has to retain this nonlinear storytelling, [and] it has to retain that weird mix of horror and comedy.”

One of the last updates about the sequel, which was initially announced in 2013, came from Dougherty last year, in which he similarly promised that he only wanted to move forward on a sequel if it could surpass the effectiveness of the original experience.

Stay tuned for updates on the possible future of Trick ‘r Treat 2.

Netflix & Shueisha

Netflix hasn’t been shy about going all-in when it comes to anime. On top of creating original anime series of their own, such as Terminator Zero, Sakamoto Days, and Arcane to name a few. On top of making their own properties, the streaming service has also brought together some classic anime series and movies to its platform. In a recent release, it has been confirmed that Netflix is bringing two major anime movies to its platform that might have shonen fans turning their heads. Those who are big “hunter” fans might want to see what the streaming service has up its sleeves.

Hunter x Hunter has remained one of the biggest shonen series in recent memory, thanks in part to creator Yoshihiro Togashi returning to the world of Gon and his fellow hunters. After spending years away from the manga due to health issues, the manga artist has been working slowly but surely on releasing new chapters of his beloved series. The current arc, the Succession Contest Arc, is one that doesn’t focus on the likes of Gon and Killua but it has had big implications on the shonen universe. Kurapika has been front and center in this arc as Togashi weaves a wild arc in a royal civil war.

Studio Madhouse

Hunter x Hunter’s Movie Arrivals

On November 1st, Netflix will be bringing Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge and Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission to its streaming service. This is far from the only project that the streaming service has housed when it comes to Gon and his friends. The latest anime television series from Studio Madhouse remains available to stream on Netflix if you want to follow Gon’s adventure from the start. Considering the popularity that Hunter x Hunter continues to receive, it’s a good move for Netflix to up their hunting game.

What are Phantom Rouge and The Last Mission?

To start, Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge was first released in 2013. While it’s debatable whether this story is canon to the main franchise, Phantom Rouge’s plot is one that was based on a tale written by creator Yoshihiro Togashi. The movie itself focuses on Kurapika and his quest for revenge against those who had murdered his clan. Much like the recent television series, the movie was created by Studio Madhouse.

On the flip side, Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission was also released in 2013, painting a very different story than Phantom Rouge. Instead of focusing on an aspect of Kurapika’s quest for vengeance, the film instead introduced a dark faction of the Hunters’ guild. Attacking Killua and Kurapika, the movie takes place following the Greed Island Arc and at the start of the Chimera Ant Arc. This movie is also one that many don’t consider “canon” to the main franchise and was also made by Studio Madhouse.

hunter-x-hunter.jpg
studio madhouse

Future Hunter x Hunter Films

Unfortunately, while the manga might be forging new chapters for its future, nothing has been revealed regarding a Hunter x Hunter anime. Should the series return to the screen, many are left wondering whether a new project would continue where Madhouse had left off or if a series would start from the beginning of Gon’s journey once again. Madhouse’s recent television series focusing on Hunter x Hunter ended with the Election Arc, the small storyline that followed the fight against the Chimera Ants, so while there are a few stories to cover to get the anime up to speed, there might not be enough to continue where the previous anime left off.

It was revealed at CinemaCon earlier this year that some kind of Scary Movie reboot was in the works over at Paramount. That was enough to get fans of the satirical horror franchise excited, but little did anyone know the best news was still yet to come. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that original franchise creators Keenen Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Marlon Wayans would all be returning to the series for this new installment.

Deadline broke the news that the trio of Wayans brothers that brought the Scary Movie franchise to life back in 2000 would be reuniting to write a screenplay for the first time in 18 years. The brothers are penning the screenplay for the new Scary Movie alongside Rick Alvarez. All four of those writers will also serve as producers for Miramax.

As part of Miramax’s first-look deal with Paramount, the new Scary Movie will receive a full theatrical release. Filming is slated to start sometime next year, though no specific date was mentioned. At this time, there is also no word on a release date.

“We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise,” Miramax boss Jonathan Glickman told Deadline. “The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again,” added Keenen, Shawn, and Marlon. “This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”

Keenen Ivory Wayans wrote and directed the first two films in the Scary Movie series, which found massive audiences for their comedic takes on popular horror films like Scream and The Ring. Marlon and Shawn Wayans wrote those two films alongside their older brother, in addition to starring on-screen.

When the news first went live, Marlon took to Instagram to celebrate the reunion that fans have spent years asking for.

“WE’RE BACK,” Wayans wrote. “After nearly 20 years, the Mayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the SCARY MOVIE franchise! We’re looking forward to having fun on the big screen again.”

Knull King in Black as MCU Villain

Venom: The Last Dance introduced Marvel’s god of the symbiotes, Knull, into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe franchise – but is that as far as the villain’s reach goes? Marvel fans know that Knull is a “big bad” in the biggest sense – a character that was teased in years of Venom comic storylines before finally escaping his prison and launching a massive symbiote invasion of Earth, which required the combined efforts of Marvel’s earthbound and cosmic heroes to defeat. With that kind of precedence, fans wonder if the onscreen version of Knull will be a similar threat – not only to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe but to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.

Does Knull Already Know About the MCU?

In Venom: The Last Dance it’s established that there is a connection between Knull and all of his symbiote “children,” to the point that the symbiote and Eddie Brock can’t access their full Venom form, lest they immediately signal their position to Knull. That detail could be key to (finally) connecting the Venom franchise with the MCU.

When Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home were both released in 2021, they set up an exciting story arc that saw Eddie Brock/Venom (Tom Hardy) transported from the SSU to the MCU. Unfortunately, nothing really came of that reality-hopping event: Venom never showed up for the fight in No Way Home, and got snatched back to his home universe in The Last Dance. However, the post-credits scene of No Way Home made it clear that Venom left a little piece of himself behind on Earth-616, teeing up the MCU to have its own symbiote saga. If Knull is connected to all symbiotes, he presumably can sense the piece of Venom that exists in another reality – especially if that small bit of symbiote residue eventually bonds with a host and becomes a whole new Venom. Once that happens, Knull will have a roadmap across realities, to the MCU.

Will Spider-Man 4 Feature Knull?

The theory that Knull could be headed for the MCU has only been exacerbated by the recent news about Spider-Man 4:

We now know that Spider-Man 4 will be released in July of 2026, after Avengers: Doomsday (May 2026) but before Avengers: Secret Wars (May 2027). That has raised serious questions about how Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will react to seeing a Doctor Doom variant of his mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), and what kind of peril he’ll find himself in.

Based on Marvel’s history of Secret Wars stories, it’s a safe bet that Avengers: Doomsday will feature an event that finally fractures the Marvel Multiverse, with Doom having the mix of science and sorcery required to pull together a “Battleworld,” i.e. a Frankenstein mix of fragments from different realities, all mashed together as the last bastion of existence. It’s been a popular theory that the MCU heroes who survive Doomsday will be stranded in that Battleworld arena, where they will have to find each other and re-assemble, to reboot the multiverse (or the sacred timeline of the MCU) and soft-reboot the franchise with a new collection of characters.

That leaves Spider-Man 4 as the only currently confirmed MCU project that could be set in the Battleworld reality. If that’s the case, the realities of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and the MCU could finally overlap – meaning that Knull, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and the Venom symbiote could all end up in the same film, without needing to do a whole lot of explaining.

These Marvel movie franchises – Marvel Studios, Sony, Fox-Marvel – have become too convoluted for most fans to follow – and yet, the end of the Marvel Multiverse Saga may let them all combine their strengths. Sony has a promising big bad, but no marquee character to battle him; Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise is looking for a blockbuster-sized villain to take on in his next film while offering fans the novelty of something like a black-suit-Spider-Man story in the MCU. Don’t be surprised to see it happen.

Venom: The Last Dance in now in theaters.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has hit the silver screen before and you might be surprised how the anime franchise has done so. In 2017, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable received a live-action film in Japan that followed Josuke Higashikata and the sleepy town of Morioh. Long before this release, Phantom Blood had an original anime movie that was lost to time, receiving a brief theatrical run but eventually being lost to time. In a new report, it has been confirmed that JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has a new movie on the way and it might not be what you expect if you’re a fan of all things Joestar.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as a franchise has found longevity thanks to the dedication of its creator Hirohiko Araki. First starting the series in the 1980s, Araki has been sticking with the Joestar bloodline for decades, using each new arc of the Stand series to follow descendants of the first protagonist, Jonathan Joestar. Most recently, Araki released a new story following siblings Jodio and Dragona as they use their Stands in an effort to pull off wild heists to make sure their mother is financially secure. With twenty chapters into the latest storyline, Araki might be setting the stage for years of The JOJOLands.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Next Movie

In a recent social media post, the sound director of every JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime season had a big reveal for Stand fans. Yoshikazu Iwanami shared that the franchise is bringing three episodes of the Golden Wind to theaters, choosing some of the biggest installments of Giono Giovanna’s story for movie theaters. While fans might be a tad disheartened that this won’t include new footage or be the introduction of a new season, seeing some of Giorno’s biggest battles on the silver screen is worth checking out.

Here’s the official translation of Iwanami’s post, “We decided to screen episodes 27, 28, and 38. Please wait a little longer to find out when and where they will be screened.” While this post didn’t confirm that the silver screen adventure is making its way to North America, there’s always the possibility that the Joestars will make their way to the West.

Anime Compilation Movies Are Big Business

It should come as no surprise that the Joestars are receiving their own compilation movie based on the success that anime projects of this nature have seen in recent days. Perhaps the biggest example has been Demon Slayer, routinely creating compilation films that will fuse season finales and season openers. Following the success of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, the original movie that remains the biggest anime film of all time, Tanjiro and the Demon Slayer Corps are planning to return to the silver screen with new films that will cap off the series by exploring the Infinity Castle Arc.

As for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s future, the Golden Wind compilation film is the only anime project that has been confirmed. Joestar fans have been crossing their fingers since the conclusion of Stone Ocean that David Production will release a new season that would most likely be Steel Ball Run. The seventh storyline of the franchise is often thought of as one of the greatest arcs of the Joestars and while nothing has been confirmed, it would make sense that JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure would dive into this storyline. The story of Johnny Joestar focuses on a horse race across North America and will be quite the sight on the small screen.

Robert Downey, Jr. has become one of the highest-paid movie stars of all time, and he intends to use that money and cache to push back against ghoulish executives who would use technology to try and recreate his likeness. Appearing on the On With Kara Swisher podcast, Downey said that he trusts those currently in power at Marvel not to abuse his trust, and that when they’re gone (and after he’s dead), his attorneys will be looking out for him.

Asked about digital clones bringing Iron Man or other iconic performances back without his involvement, Downey shot it down pretty quickly, saying that while he doesn’t give the notion a lot of thought, he isn’t worried about it becoming an immediate problem.

“To go back to the MCU, I am not worried about them hijacking my character’s soul because there’s like three or four guys and gals who make all the decisions there anyway and they would never do that to me, with or without me,” Downey told Swisher.

After she noted that executives are replaceable, and future executives won’t be held to that same code of conduct, Downey quipped, “Well, you’re right. I would like to here state that I intend to sue all future executives just on spec.”

When Swisher countered that he might be dead by then, Downey added, “But my law firm will still be very active.”

Likeness rights are likely to be one of the next big legal questions with the rise of generative artificial intelligence and other digital technologies that can create believable digital replicas of individuals.

A lot of attention has gone to people using generative AI to create deepfake nudes and other inappropriate images and videos featuring people who do not consent, with San Francisco suing one of the sites that powers that tech. In Hollywood, though, there are already years of precedent that “resurrecting” dead actors (like Star Wars‘s Peter Cushing) is acceptable behavior.

The use of generative AI has become a sticking point in writing and acting contract negotiations already, with last year’s WGA strikes dragging on after studios tried to insist that they wanted to use AI for a variety of tasks currently part of the writers’ purview.

Downey’s Iron Man persona is retired (at least for now) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he will return in 2026 with Avengers: Doomsday, in which he will play the role of villain Doctor Doom.

Fans of the Fantastic Beasts film franchise haven’t exactly had it easy over the past several years. Things started out so positively with the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016, as people enjoyed the Harry Potter universe spinoff. There were plans for the film to be the first of five in a series that not only told the story of Newt Scamander, but also gave a ton of backstory to the characters of Grindelwald and Voldemort. Unfortunately, things took a turn after that. After two more divisive films, it appears the Fantastic Beasts series is done for good.

Neither Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald nor Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore could achieve the critical or commercial success of the first film in the series. While fans still held out hope that the series would find a way to continue at some point, star Eddie Redmayne has all-but shut the door on that scenario.

Speaking to ComicBook about his new Peacock thriller series, Day of the Jackal, Redmayne said that we’ve likely seen the last of New Scamander on the big screen.

“I think they probably have [seen the last of Newt],” Redmayne told us. “That was a very frank answer, but yeah. And that’s as far as I know. I mean, you’d have to speak to the people at Warner Bros. and J.K Rowling, but as far as I know, that’s it. I think he may come back in a glimpse in the Universal world in Florida that they’re opening up, in which you may catch a glimpse of what he was up to in Paris.”

This shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise for fans of the Harry Potter franchise, considering the dwindling returns and interest in the last couple of Fantastic Beasts movies. The Secrets of Dumbledore made less than half of the total box office of the original Fantastic Beasts movie six years prior, though it did get substantially better reviews from critics and fans than The Crimes of Grindelwald.

For a time, it seemed like the Fantastic Beasts saga might be the on-screen future for the Harry Potter franchise, at least in the short term. As that has fizzled, however, Warner Bros. has made the head-scratching decision to completely reboot Harry Potter as a television series, recasting all of the roles from the films and essentially retelling the same story we’ve already seen and read.

While he won’t be returning to the world of Harry Potter as Newt Scamander, Eddie Redmayne can be seen starring in Day of the Jackal, which premieres on Peacock November 14th.

DC fans are patiently waiting for the first Superman trailer, and they recently got some good news from James Gunn. It feels like a lifetime ago we got the announcement that James Gunn and Peter Safran were spearheading DC Studios and rebooting the DC Universe. The first motion picture in the pipeline is Superman starring David Corenswet. Filming for Superman wrapped over the summer, and now all that’s left is to wait for the anticipated trailer. We have no idea when the Superman trailer will be released, but Gunn did provide an update on the trailer’s status.

James Gunn responded to a comment on Threads asking about the progress of the Superman trailer and whether it was finished. “It’s not. I worked on it this weekend,” Gunn replied. As you can imagine, there were a lot of responses to that comment from Gunn, with fans asking if it’s the teaser trailer or full trailer, who is composing the music, along with asking Gunn not to spoil the entire Superman movie in the trailer. That’s become a recent trend with trailers, as they’ve started revealing more and more of the film and leaving very little for audiences to see in theaters.

When will James Gunn release the Superman trailer?

Since we know James Gunn has been working on the trailer for Superman, the next round of speculation moves to when will the trailer be released. We’re coming to the end of the year, and Superman won’t hit theaters until July 11, 2025. If we look ahead at the calendar, one timeframe does look like the perfect time for DC Studios to offer the first peek at the new Man of Steel.

The one day of the year that is almost defined by the sheer number of high-profile trailers revealed for the first time is Super Bowl Sunday. The game that decides the champions of the NFL draws one of the largest audiences each year, so studios make sure to pay top dollar to premiere trailers for their upcoming movies. Last year we had the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine. It makes the most sense for DC to drop the Superman trailer during the Super Bowl in order to have the most eyes on it as possible.

DC sleuths also think the Superman trailer could be released in December during CCXP. James Gunn didn’t confirm the suspicions, but he did give the comment a thinking emoji in response. So should we take that as a denial? It’s hard to say. Also, if the trailer for Superman does come at CCXP, there’s hope that DC releases it online so people not at the convention can also watch it.

When do you think we’ll see the Superman trailer? Let us know your thoughts on social media @ComicBook!

Netflix and Skydance have teamed up for a brand new fantasy adventure called Spellbound, which makes its global debut next month. From Shrek director Vicky Jenson, and iconic Disney composer Alan Menken, Spellbound aims to be an animated tentpole for Netflix, one that can help the streamer compete with giants like Disney and Pixar this awards season.

On Tuesday morning, Netflix released the first trailer for Spellbound, which you can check out in the video above.

Spellbound stars Rachel Zegler as the main character, Ellian, who is the young daughter of the rulers of Lumbria. After a terrible spell transforms her parents into monsters, Ellian must go on a quest to save her entire kingdom.

In addition to Zegler, Spellbound stars John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Tituss Burgess, Nathan Lane with Javier Bardem, and Nicole Kidman. The film hits Netflix on November 22nd.

“I can’t think of Ellian without thinking of Rachel Zegler. She just IS Ellian,” Jenson said of the Spellbound star. “She’s got such a wonderful, charismatic personality, very real and fresh. She’s a great actress and a stunning singer. When we met and started working with her she was just down for it, down to play, to try anything. Even in her earliest demos of the songs she was weeping, she was laughing, she just brought everything and left nothing on the table. A lot of what she did in those early days is still in the movie, it was just that good. Rachel is one of a kind. She simply has everything.”

Jenson went on to explain why she holds a story like Spellbound so near and dear to her heart, and why fantasy films like this one (and Shrek) are a way to honor her family.

“Mythology and fairytales have always been part of my life and upbringing,” the director explained. “My father, the son of immigrant Romanian parents, was an aspiring writer and my mother, raised in Costa Rica by literary parents, taught us to love the arts and old family ghost stories. Storytelling runs deep in our families!

Spellbound is about what it is that really makes a family. Like any timeless myth or lasting fairytale, I believe the meaning reaches even further than the specifics of this family’s dynamic. It speaks to kids and their parents and the kinds of alienation that can happen between them as well as the steps we have to take toward each other, how we can weather it together, to come through to the other side with better understanding.”

2024 has been a real scream for thriller and horror movies. M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap put a twist on the Eras Tour, Nicolas Cage and James McAvoy were unhinged in Longlegs and Speak No Evil, Sydney Sweeney gave a divine performance in Immaculate, Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot saw the light of day, and studios mined their libraries for the new prequels A Quiet Place: Day One, The First Omen, The Strangers: Chapter 1, and Rosemary’s Baby prequel Apartment 7A. And those are just the horror movies you may have heard of.

Besides Smile 2 and Terrifier 3, the October box office has had few frights this Halloween season. But not to fear: there are new horror movies streaming in the days before October 31, so you can get your horror fix without leaving the house.

Don’t Move

Produced by Sam Raimi (the Evil Dead movies and Drag Me to Hell), this thriller stars Kelsey Asbille (Yellowstone) as a woman who is injected with a paralytic drug by a killer (American Horror Story‘s Finn Wittrock) in a secluded forest. As her body shuts down, her fight for survival begins.

Where to stream Don’t Move: Netflix

The Exorcism

In this meta-horror that’s not related to The Exorcist or The Pope’s Exorcist — which starred Russell Crowe as an exorcist — The Exorcism sees Crowe play Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions… or if there’s something more sinister at play.

Where to stream The Exorcism: Shudder, Shudder on AMC+ (premieres Oct. 30)

Time Cut

When teen Lucy Field (Outer Banks‘ Madison Bailey) discovers a time machine — just another day in the life of a high school science whiz — she decides to travel back and prevent the crime that’s haunted her young life: the murder of her older sister Summer (Ginny & Georgia‘s Antonia Gentry). Can she survive the early ’00s and unmask the killer? Or will she say “Bye Bye Bye”… to her life?!? Only time will tell.

Where to stream Time Cut: Netflix (premieres Oct. 30)

The Substance

One of the best-reviewed movies of the year is also one of the bloodiest. Gory body horror The Substance stars Demi Moore (Feud) as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn — temporarily — as the gorgeous, twenty-something Sue (Kinds of Kindness‘ Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. Easy, right?

Where to stream The Substance: Mubi

Amityville: Where the Echo Lives

1979’s The Amityville Horror, the classic horror movie based on the best-selling novel of the same name, inspired dozens of sequels, remakes, and ripoffs unrelated to the DeFeo murders and the infamous house in Amityville, including Amityville: Where the Echo Lives. In the low-budget Lionsgate movie, a paranormal investigator (Sarah McDonald) receives a call from a terrified woman who claims her house is inhabited by a ghost and discovers the building has a horrifying history.

Where to stream Amityville: Where the Echo Lives: PVOD (starting Oct. 29)

Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End (Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin)

A strange rabies-like disease begins to spread unchecked across the planet, turning humans into extremely aggressive creatures. But Javier (Francisco Ortiz) has been living his own apocalypse for some time; still reeling from the loss of his wife in an accident, he’s been depressed and isolated from his family for a year, with Lúculo, his cat, as his only companion. As the illness worsens, his sister insists that he leave Vigo and join her in the Canary Islands, but the plan fails. He and Lúculo are soon forced to leave, meeting unlikely but essential travelling companions by land and sea. Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin is a story of grief, a journey of survival, both physical and emotional, with action, suspense, a rabid infection, a little blood… and a grumpy cat.

Where to stream Apocalypse Z: Prime Video (premieres Oct. 31)

Even though love stories are often more grounded than bombastic cinema, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t still treacherous villains, and Your Monster is no different. While Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey play the lead roles in the project, actors Edmund Donovan and Kayla Foster also star in the project and play key roles in our protagonist’s narrative, which forced them to endure some pretty intense on-screen dynamics. Making the feat all the more impressive is that there’s an actual monster in the experience, yet that monster was nothing compared to the wrath of our protagonist. Foster played double duty on the project, as she also served as a producer with writer-director Caroline Lindy. Your Monster is currently playing in theaters.

As far as how he endured a vicious tongue-lashing from Barrera’s character, Donovan detailed to ComicBook, “Man, I’m not going to lie, that was rough. And everyone — Kayla, you were very sensitive to the fact that I had to be this horrible villain, [this] hated guy the whole time. Everyone, on the day, was very sympathetic. And she was making up a lot of that stuff, she was just improvising, so I didn’t even know it was coming, man.”

Foster added, “And Edmund is so sensitive and sweet and wonderful. So he was really taking it in, really listening to her. And so Caroline and I were checking on him constantly.”

Your Monster tells the story of the soft-spoken actor Laura Franco (Melissa Barrera), who is dumped by her longtime boyfriend (Edmund Donovan) while recovering from surgery and retreats to her childhood home to recover. With her future looking bleak, insult is added to injury when Laura discovers her ex is staging a musical that she helped him develop. But out of these gut-wrenching life changes emerges a monster (Tommy Dewey) with whom she finds a connection, encouraging Laura to follow her dreams, open her heart, and fall in love with her inner rage.

[RELATED – Your Monster Stars Open Up About the Unconventional Love Story]

While maybe not as overtly harmful to Barrera’s Laura, Foster’s Mazie still plays an important role in having a negative impact on Laura’s mental state.

“I think there’s something about feeling like you have support and that it’s there and it keeps falling away and betraying you. There’s something really painful about that,” the actor admitted. “It’s one thing to feel like you have nothing and no one, and you know how to approach that. But I think Mazie adds to Laura’s pain through the beginning of the story, because she keeps saying, ‘I’m your ride or die, I’ve got you. I’m going to do this, I’m going to do this, I’m going to do this.’ And she keeps just bailing on her, which I think is almost more painful than her not being there.”

Your Monster understandably has plenty of metaphors and allegories, as the actors expressed the film resolves itself by addressing how things aren’t always black-and-white divides between good and evil.

“I had to advocate for him in playing him, but I don’t back him. I don’t agree with what he does,” Donovan explained of his character’s actions. “He is definitely, objectively the bad guy. I don’t think that it’s all that hard to see. So I do think he deserves something.”

Foster noted, “By the way, the story, while it’s a redemption story, it’s also a warning story of not having a relationship with your monster. If you don’t create a relationship with your monster and it’s too late, it can spin out of control. So I think it’s two-sided.”

Your Monster is now playing in theaters.

Rumors that pop star Dua Lipa had been signed to a multi-picture deal by DC Studios was debunked by Superman director and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn over the weekend. Reports suggested that the singer-songwriter had inked a “ten-year deal,” a phrasing that Gunn questioned in particular, noting that modern Hollywood contracts are almost exclusively concerned with the number of projects, not the duration of employment. Reports had claimed that Dua Lipa would play Zatanna, the backwards-speaking magician famous for her time with the Justice League and, more recently, her romance with inveterate magical bastard John Constantine.

Gunn, who has always been a vocal debunker of false reporting related to his projects, was quizzed on social media about the rumors. After admitting he hadn’t heard that one before, he quashed the report.

“Until this moment it was neither of those things but as of now it’s debunked as well,” Gunn said on Threads. “’10 year contract?’ Do they think this is the 1930’s? I’m a Dua Lipa fan, but no.”

No doubt there will be those who quibble with the phrasing, suggesting that Gunn didn’t actually say Dua Lipa didn’t sign a deal, just not the one reported. That’s likely a silly exercise, though. Gunn is well known for debunking fake news, but equally seems pretty good at keeping quiet when there’s some grain of truth to the story. Playing a little “gotcha” game with the internet doesn’t really seem like his style.

Zatanna is part of the Justice League Dark, and has therefore been attached to a number of aborted projects in recent years. Created in 1964, the character made her live-action debut in Smallville, portrayed by Serinda Swan. Before and since then, she has appeared in a number of animated projects and even some video games.

A number of projects that would have featured Zatanna have fallen apart since 2005, including two different iterations of planned solo movies, a Justice League Dark movie by Guillermo del Toro, and a Justice League Dark project that JJ Abrams was developing for Max before Discovery bought Warner Bros. and everything at DC changed. Reports at the time suggested that each member of the Justice League Dark would have had their own stand-alone Max projects (either films or shows), building to a collaborative Justice League Dark project in a model that echoed what Marvel had done at Netflix with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the other Defenders-verse shows.

Writer/director Caroline Lindy’s Your Monster has gone through a number of evolutions since she first conjured the concept. The story began as a feature before she trimmed it down to a short, and even then, there were possibilities that it would have been adapted into a series for the short-lived platform Quibi, with it ultimately landing in theaters as a genre-bending love story. Lindy recently recalled the evolution of that original story and how her original idea pivoted in various ways on its path to becoming the feature film that audiences have been checking out. Your Monster is now playing in theaters.

“Originally, the project was a feature film, and then I found out about the grant program through Women in Film, so I had to somehow chop it down to a 15-minute project, 15-minute script, but that was actually extremely helpful because it makes you laser in on what the most important elements of the story [are], the most exciting aspects of it,” Lindy expressed to ComicBook of the project’s development. “And then when I had to expand it back to a feature, the proof of concept is really helpful for getting my production company, my partners on board. Because I had the short film and producers attached, it helped to get the financing, ultimately, for the feature film.”

She continued, “So it’s a long road. It’s a long journey. For a moment, it was going to be a Quibi show, so you have to be extremely patient. It takes many, many years to get an idea like this off the ground, especially one that’s as wacky as this film. I think the hardest thing was trying to remain hopeful that it was going to come to fruition, even though it took so, so long.”

While the film manages to embrace a variety of tones throughout its run time, it doesn’t pull its punches with its finale, a decision that Lindy always knew she would arrive at.

“This movie is a monster film, so I felt like I had to, even though this is not straight horror, it’s more spooky, cozy, or lighthearted, horror painted with a lighter brushstroke, I felt like I still needed to pay homage to some of my favorite monster movies,” the filmmaker detailed. “I felt like this is a movie about a woman’s rage and a woman finding her voice and in an unapologetic, proud way. She’s a musical theater actress, so I felt like it had to have a really big, bold, grand finale that was going to be fun and ridiculous but truthful to the way I felt when I, finally, was proud to share my monster with the world.”

She added, “I love grand finales. Usually in a Broadway show, there’s a big grand finale, and so I felt like it was appropriate for the character. I felt like it was appropriate for the movie, but ultimately I thought it was the most fun way to end the film and I will always pick the most fun ending over anything else.”

Your Monster is now playing in theaters.

Welcome back to the jungle. After dating Karate Kid: Legends for 2025 and Spider-Man 4 for summer 2026, Sony on Monday announced the Jumanji 3 release date: December 11, 2026. The untitled Jumanji sequel is the fourth in the franchise but the third in the Dwayne Johnson-fronted trilogy that began with 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which hit theaters on Dec. 20. Jumanji: The Next Level also opened two weeks before Christmas in 2019.

The new Jumanji movie will open two weeks after an untitled Disney animated movie (Nov. 25, 2026) and one week before an untitled event film from Dune director Denis Villeneuve (Dec. 18).

Sony Pictures also confirmed that Johnson (Moana 2), Kevin Hart (Borderlands), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Jack Black (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) are in talks to return, with Jake Kasdan directing. Sony’s rebooted Jumanji franchise re-imagined the board game from the 1995 original as a video game that transforms its players into playable avatars: archaeologist Dr. Xander “Smolder” Bravestone (Johnson), zoologist Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Hart), commando Ruby Roundhouse (Gillan), and cryptographer Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon (Black).

“We’ve got a big vision for [the next Jumanji] movie,” Hiram Garcia, series producer and President of Production at Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, told ComicBook in 2021. Garcia added the plan was to return to Jumanji after Red One, which was set for release in December 2023 before it was delayed to 2024. The Christmas comedy reuniting Johnson and Kasdan will now open before the Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 15.

“Jake is doing Red One for us, so that is going to be next up. But sometime after Red One comes out, Jumanji is going to be on deck,” Garcia said. “I feel like we’ll have everything ready by then and we’ll be able to get into that third installment.”

“It’s going to be good,” Garcia added. “It’s really fun and it’s smart. It’s a really smart take. And Jake has been spearheading that, and he’s brilliant.”

Following his role as Santa’s head of security Callum Drift — a member of E.L.F., or the North Pole’s Enforcement, Logistics and Fortification division — in Red One, Johnson’s schedule includes voicing Maui in Disney’s Moana 2 (in theaters Nov. 27), his role as former wrestler and MMA fighter Mark Kerr in the Benny Safdie-directed The Smashing Machine for A24, and reprising his role as Maui in Disney’s live-action Moana movie, set for July 10, 2026.

The Lord of the Rings will be reviving Christopher Lee’s performance as Saruman in the upcoming anime feature film, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim in a cool new way. The Lord of the Rings will be making its anime debut later this December with a full feature film telling a story that’s never really been explored in the franchise before. Teasing that it will feature the franchise’s very first female lead, The War of the Rohirrim is going to have a lot to offer for The Lord of the Rings fans. Including a return from the late Christopher Lee to the film universe.

The Lord of The Rings: The War of The Rohirrim producer Philippa Boyens spoke with TheOneRing (as transcribed by ScreenRant) about the upcoming anime feature film and revealed that Christopher Lee would be providing the voice for the animated version of Saruman. While the actor himself sadly passed away years ago, the producer explained that with the permission of Lee’s late wife, they were able to use older, previously unheard voice recordings from The Hobbit for Lee’s return as Saruman in the new film.

Christopher Lee Returns as Saruman in The Lord of the Rings

“When we reached out to Gitte, Lady Lee, who’s sadly no longer with us… she said the thing that I think Peter [Jackson] felt in his heart, which was that Sir Christopher would have wanted this,” Boyens explained. “And so we went into his records, I got to go back and hear his voice, not just doing the lines, but talking to us as we were recording them. And we based it on a line from The Hobbit, which is ‘Are you in need of assistance, my lady?’ A version of that line.” From there, Boyens explained how they searched through multiple takes to find a way to use in the actual film.

“And we thought, okay that’s a line, we can see how many takes he did of that. Can we use it? Can we find a new read on it and change it up a little bit. And our brilliant guys did that. But it is an authentic bit of Christopher Lee performance that it’s based on.” Boyens had explained that they likely would have cast a soundalike if they weren’t able to dig into these audio recordings, but was glad to ultimately make it work. “To be honest, we didn’t [know] if we could find that, and so just as sort of, like, due diligence, let’s see if there is a cast-alike as someone who can do the voice out there. Now, I know the internet is going to say, of course, ‘There’s a million people who could have done Chris Lee’s voice,’ but, do you know what? I don’t think so. I’m so glad we used his own voice, and it’s fantastic.”

What Is The War of the Rohirrim?

We’ll be seeing Saruman again soon enough as The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be hitting theaters beginning on December 13th. Currently clocking in at two hours and 30 minutes, the new film is directed by Kenji Kamiyama for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation with animation production from Sola Entertainment. Based on characters originally crafted by J.R.R. Tolkien, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Sam Register, Sam Register, Carolyn Blackwood and Toby Emmerich serve as executive producers.

The script comes from Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will also star the likes of Gaia Wise stars as Hèra, Luke Pasqualino as Wulf, Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, Shaun Dooley as Freca and more.

Will the Venom Movies Continue With or Without Tom hardy

Venom: The Last Dance purports itself to be the end of the journey for Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, but that doesn’t mean the Venom movie franchise is over. In fact, Venom 3 has been leaving some fans confused as the threequel very much does the opposite of bringing the franchise to a close: it sets up entirely new storylines that can extend beyond the Venom franchise into the larger sandbox of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, with a “King In Black” crossover event with Knull.

But Sony can also keep going with the Venom solo franchise – with or without Tom Hardy – thanks to years of precedence set by the comics.

How Venom Movies Can Continue With or Without Tom Hardy

If Tom Hardy Returns – Tom Hardy may be done with the Venom movie series in the sense that he’s done with having to lead and produce movies where he’s giving a dual performance dialed up to eleven. Hardy has been the first one to let people know that should Sony or even Marvel Studios come to him asking for another Eddie Brock/Venom performance in some kind of crossover with Spider-Man, or King in Black event film, he’d answer that call.

The comic book version of King In Black saw Eddie and Venom ally with Spider-Man to fight Knull and an army of symbiotes that surround Earth and block it off from the sun. Eddie replaced Knull as the King in Black, becoming the new god of the symbiotes (at the cost of his humanity). A “King in Black” movie could see the dark anti-heroes of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Morbius, Kraven, Venom) having to track down Hardy’s Eddie Brock and get him back together with the Venom symbiote in order to defeat Knull. That kind of scenario would only require Hardy to be one man in an ensemble cast, with limited screen time, and still get an epic showcase (and possible new arc) in the finale. It’s the kind of event worthy of Hardy making a return.

If Tom Hardy Doesn’t Return – The Venom symbiote has had several major hosts (and even more temporary ones) in Marvel Comics lore. One character a lot of Marvel fans want to see explored is “Agent Venom,” the version of the symbiote worn by Peter Parker’s old school bully Flash Thompson. Thompson (now a soldier serving in the Middle East) was wounded in combat and had his legs amputated. The former athlete is recruited into “Project Rebirth,” which gives him the Venom symbiote (with a tight least regarding bonding and usage) to make him the ultimate covert operative. “Agent Venom” eventually breaks loose of government shackles and becomes a full-fledged hero, and eventually the “Agent Anti-Venom” version the character. Sony retooling Venom as an action-espionage film with a superhero bend is the John Wick-meets-Marvel angle that could be box office gold!

Another big Venom host from the comics is Mac Gargan, the Spider-Man villain Scorpion who wore the Venom symbiote through the mid-2000s. Gargan’s Venom took the character back to classic villainy and mayhem committing crimes and eating brains. Eventually, Norman Osborn recruited Gargan’s Venom to his “Dark Avengers” team to impersonate a new black-suit version of Spider-Man. The story of a criminal masquerading as Venom and/or Spider-Man is the kind of soft reboot the Venom films could also work with.

Finally, let’s not forget there’s still the classic Venom origin story that has yet to be done – the one where the symbiote suit first bonds with Peter Parker, and learns about all the spider powers that explain why Venom takes on the form he does. If any of the Spider-Man actors (Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire) takes over as the star of the next Venom movie, it’s already a guaranteed box office hit – even more so if Tom Hardy shows up wanting his suit back.

Whether it’s the truth about the “I see dead people” line in The Sixth Sense or that Split was part of Shyamalan’s superhero trilogy of Unbreakable/Split/Glass all along, the filmmaker is a master of the plot twist and didn’t-see-it-coming endings across such films as Unbreakable (2000), Signs (2002), The Village (2004), The Visit (2015), Old (2021), and Trap (2024).

Will there be a Galaxy Quest 2?

As of April of 2023, a Galaxy Quest television series was reportedly in the works for Paramount+. Speaking with ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian in support of The Santa Clauses, Allen revealed he’s looking forward to getting Galaxy Quest 2 off the ground any way possible.

“Consistently, this crew and everybody else with Galaxy Quest has been fighting to do this ‘moments later’ when the Thermians come back. We literally just talked about this yesterday, a group of us here, and we don’t know why [it hasn’t happened],” Allen says. “There’s been a script and our friend Alan Rickman passed away, so that script involving he and I in the whole story disappeared. The story itself was so clever and so fun. I love that crew and I love everything about Galaxy Quest.”

Galaxy Quest is considered one of the best Star Trek movies.

Galaxy Quest is a clear parody of Star Trek, following a group of actors who starred in a cult classic sci-fi television series and have struggled to gain notoriety outside of those roles ever since. They’re shocked to discover that aliens are real and that a group of them are seeking their characters’ help, having mistaken broadcasts of the original television series for a documentary.

Dean Parisot directed Galaxy Quest from a screenplay written by David Howard and Robert Gordon, based on Howard’s story. Despite having no official affiliation with Star Trek, fans attending Star Trek Las Vegas in 2013 voted Galaxy Quest the seventh-best Star Trek movie of all time, landing it in the middle of the list, sandwiched between Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Generations.

Galaxy Quest opened in 1999 and earned $90 million during its theatrical run, double its reported budget of $45 million. Critics also enjoyed the film, and it sports a stellar 90% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critics consensus reading, “Intelligent and humorous satire with an excellent cast — no previous Trekkie knowledge needed to enjoy this one.”

While a sequel has yet to materialize, Galaxy Quest did see a continuation in comic book form. IDW Publishing released Galaxy Quest: Global Warning in 2008 and, in 2015, published a new Galaxy Quest ongoing series taking place years after the film, later collected as Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues.

Back in 2019, Avengers: Endgame seemed to be the sendoff for both Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and also for directors Joe and Anthony Russo within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed Downey and the Russos were returning for Avengers: Doomsday. While all of these figures have gone on to explore other storytelling realms since 2019, Joe Russo recently teased that he wouldn’t have returned to the MCU if it wasn’t for good reason, claiming that the upcoming Doomsday is on “equal footing” for how game-changing both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame were for the superhero genre. Avengers: Doomsday currently has a release date of May 1, 2026.

“We’re all very close,” Joe Russo shared with GamesRadar+ of the connection between the filmmakers and Downey. “We had been working on another project before Marvel approached all of us – so we’re working on another project with Robert – and there was a story that evolved through conversations that we got very excited about. Because it’s always got to be the story.”

He continued, “Why would we come back if we didn’t feel like we had a story that had that possibility of being on an equal footing with Infinity War and Endgame unless there’s a kernel there for an idea that’s really explosive?”

Virtually ever since Endgame, the Russo brothers and Downey have been asked about the likelihood of a return in any capacity, which resulted in a broad spectrum of answers about such returns. The Russo brothers have often expressed that a project in which Secret Wars could be brought to life would be enticing to them, with those hopes being announced as a reality at this year’s SDCC.

While fans are understandably excited about the upcoming returns, it comes as a result of a tumultuous period for the studio. Before Feige confirmed that Avengers 5 would be Doomsday, the project was expected to be Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Much like the studio had done with Thanos, various installments in the MCU were poising Jonathon Majors’s Kang the Conqueror to be the multiverse-spanning threat, specifically with Kang’s inclusion in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In 2023, Majors was found guilty on charges of both assault and harassment, resulting in Marvel announcing that they were parting ways with the performer.

The narrative seeds of Kang’s importance in the MCU understandably caused a number of questions about how the franchise would handle the figure going forward. With Kang not having earned as significant of a footprint within the MCU as Thanos and with The Fantastic Four: First Steps set to be released in 2025, the franchise likely has a more organic opportunity to hint at Doctor Doom next year before Downey fully embraces the character for the 2026 Doomsday.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.

Shrek Star John Lithgow’s Comments About Franchise Return Have Us Excited (And Confused) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/shrek-5-john-lithgow-lord-farquaad-question/ Mon, 28 Oct 2024 18:17:57 +0000 https://comicbook.com/?p=1192909

The first Shrek was a game-changer for Dreamworks Animation, and years later, the studio is still hoping to bring the franchise back to life. Since 2017, there have been rumors of a fifth Shrek movie, and earlier this year Eddie Murphy confirmed that he was working not only on Shrek but also on a stand-alone Donkey spinoff. That got fans excited, and we’ve had some small updates since, but all we really knew was that Murphy, Mike Myers, and Cameron Diaz would return to reprise their roles. Now, recurring villain John Lithgow says he’s open to a return…but that he has not yet been asked to do so.

It’s easy to wonder if that means we’re done seeing Lord Farquaad altogether…or if they just haven’t asked Lithgow yet. After all, unless he is a main character, one could imagine that Lithgow would not be in the voice booth for as long as the series leads. Farquaad had relatively little screen time compared to Shrek and Donkey in pretty much every film.

That said — the clock is presumably ticking.

“I started recording Shrek, I think it’s coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next,” Murphy told Collider over the summer.

It’s been over a decade since Shrek Forever After — so long that some rumors had suggested the franchise is as likely to be full-on rebooted as continued. But with fans’ love for Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy int he roles, a reboot feels like it would be a hard sell. There could, at least in theory, be a middle ground where they reboot but keep the voice cast (think of how often that’s happened to Scooby-Doo!), but honestly, the critical and commercial success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish likely makes it hard to stray too far from the classic Shrek cast and storyline.

Based on William Steig’s picture book Shrek!, the franchise launched in 2001 and consists of four Shrek feature films, a pair of Puss in Boots spinoffs, and numerous short movies and holiday specials made for TV and home video.

The Shrek franchise has brought in over $1 billion at the box office, in addition to hundreds of millions in ancillary revenue and merchandising. With the return of Kung Fu Panda to theaters earlier this year, it became clear that Dreamworks was serious about reviving some of their properties, making it even more likely that new Shrek was finally on the way.

The Donkey movie is something Murphy has mentioned in the past, but rumors about it are far less well-established than the Shrek 5 stories. If it happens, he will be the second character (after Antonio Banderas’s Puss in Boots) to get a spinoff movie. Banderas’ version of Puss in Boots made his onscreen debut in 2004’s Shrek 2. Puss in Boots was such a breakout hit as a character that DreamWorks brought him back for two more Shrek movies after that, before giving him his first spinoff film and a follow-up animated series.

Deadpool & Wolverine is giving fans even more variants of Wolverine. This week features the release of Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine: The Art of the Movie, a deluxe art book that takes fans behind-the-scenes of Deadpool 3. It’s always fun to get to look behind the curtain and see what went into making these blockbuster projects, including a gallery of never-before-seen artwork. We’ve already seen a lot of concept art for Deadpool & Wolverine, but the upcoming art book reveals more Wolverine variants left on the cutting room floor. One in particular is an interesting mashup of Wolverine and The Incredible Hulk.

The Artbook Collector shared a video combing through the artwork for Deadpool & Wolverine. As you can see, there are several variants of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine that audiences saw in Deadpool & Wolverine, and some who never made the cut. There’s Weapon X Wolverine, Wolverine after he had his Adamantium ripped out of his body by Magneto, a Wolverine variant in soldier fatigues, Baby Wolverine, Patch alongside Hulk’s Joe Fixit persona, Ultimate Wolverine, and Wolverine in black leather from the X-Men movies. One small photo shows off a green Wolverine the size of the Hulk sporting Adamantium claws coming out of his fists.

Marvel’s Hulkverine explained

You may think of Hulkverine as just a variant created for Deadpool & Wolverine, but the character actually exists in the comics. Though not a Wolverine variant, “Hulkverine” was actually codenamed Weapon H and is a former military mercenary named Clayton Cortez. Created by Greg Pak and Mike Deodato Jr., the Hulkverine was Weapon X’s attempt to make a super-soldier with Hulk and Wolverine’s DNA. Instead of getting samples of their DNA, Weapon X had to settle for Amadeus Cho’s Brawn and Old Man Logan DNA along with nanites taken from Lady Deathstrike. Weapon H also underwent the Adamantium-bonding process, giving him Adamantium claws and Hulk’s massive grey form.

Marvel also released a Hulkverines miniseries that pitted the Weapon H Hulkverine against the very heroes he was based off of: Hulk and Wolverine. Of course, the three heroes wind up battling each other, though Hulkverine is being secretly manipulated by The Leader. He later starred in other Marvel events like War of the Realms and Absolute Carnage, as well as a new volume of Savage Avengers.

How bummed are you to see that Hulkverine was left on the cutting room floor in Deadpool & Wolverine? Let us know your thoughts on social media @ComicBook!

Venom: The Last Dance’s CinemaScore Sets a Disappointing Record For the Trilogy https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/venom-the-last-dances-cinemascore-sets-a-disappointing-record-for-the-trilogy/ Mon, 28 Oct 2024 17:31:58 +0000 https://comicbook.com/?p=1192792

The Venom films have not exactly been critical darlings, but the billion-dollar franchise managed to succeed largely due to how appealing audiences found them. With Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy and company are going out on something of a low note, at least according to one meaningful metric: the movie earned a B- CinemaScore, the lowest of the franchise, likely indicating that Venom 3 will not have the kind of word-of-mouth that drove the first one to become an instant cult classic.

When they were released in theaters, both Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage got a B+. At the time, Let There Be Carnage was seen as overachieving a bit, since the more violent a movie is, the more members of the audience may be turned off. That might not hurt as much on Rotten Tomatoes, where the reviews tend to be written hours or days later, but CinemaScore polls people right outside the theater. Instead of thinking holistically about what a good time you had, you might be thinking about that one image you really want to get out of your head. Venom 3 may have failed to clear the bar that Carnage did, because it really pushed its PG-13 as far as it will go.

That’s at odds with the PopcornMeter over on Rotten Tomatoes, where the audience score is 80% positive — the same as the first Venom. That ties it for second, since Venom: Let There Be Carnage scored 84%. That movie hasn’t aged as well as the first, with many fans now calling it the worst of the three, but it benefited from the first movie’s cult-camp status, and earned a whopping 57% positive reviews from critics (Venom only got 30%, and The Last Dance got 37%).

Venom managed to deliver a hit series for Sony in spite of the fact that Sony spent the last handful of years trying and failing to launch other Spider-Man-adjacent franchises like Morbius and Madame Web. Venom: The Last Dance — which Hardy has said will be his last ride with the symbiote — came out in theaters this weekend and grossed $51 million at the domestic box office, a franchise low.

Hardy’s Venom won’t be the last big-screen take on the character, of course; Venom originated as a Spider-Man villain, and as recently as Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Marvel Cinematic Universe teased the possibility of introducing symbiotes to the main-line universe. Some rumors peg Venom as the villain (or one of the villains) of Spider-Man 4, which was recently confirmed to be headed for production soon.

Netflix is making it easier for subscribers to clip and share moments from their favorite titles. The streamer on Monday announced Netflix Moments, a mobile feature that gives users the option to “share this moment” to social media platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram Stories via the Netflix app on iOS and Android. Whether it’s Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams dance scene or Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson shredding Metallica in Stranger Things, subscribers can now save, rewatch, and share scenes they can’t stop talking about. Variety first reported the news.

“With Moments, members can quickly bookmark a scene while watching on their phone, saving it directly to their My Netflix tab for easy access later,” Netflix says. “Members can also share their favorite scenes across platforms like Instagram and Facebook, creating a seamless way to engage with their favorite content and share it with friends. We’re excited to add even more features in the future to help members enjoy and share their favorite Netflix moments.”

The new Netflix feature is being promoted as part of the “It’s So Good” campaign (below), which sees Giancarlo Esposito (Netflix’s The Gentlemen) channel the Wednesday dance, Cardi B going live to talk about Baby Reindeer, and Olympic gymnast Simone Biles feeling the need for speed after binge-watching Drive to Survive.

“You know that feeling when a scene, character, or line from a show or movie just sticks with you, and you can’t help but text your friends, ‘You have to watch this, it’s so good!’?” said Marian Lee, Netflix’s chief marketing officer. “Whether it’s sparking Halloween costume ideas or becoming a TikTok sensation, the incredible fandoms we see are a testament to what makes Netflix amazing. Our new campaign is all about celebrating these unforgettable moments, taking you back to the feeling you had when you first became obsessed with a great show on Netflix.”

“I know firsthand there’s something magical that happens when a powerful story finds its audience on Netflix,” added Esposito, whose credits include Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Boys, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian. “Suddenly everyone is captivated and can’t stop talking about it, and that passion just keeps compounding.”

Said Biles, “When I get hooked by a story, I go deep. It happens all the time — I’m watching a scene and have to find someone to talk to about it. At the end of the day, I’m a fan who obsesses over shows like everyone else.”

In 2021, Netflix rolled out the shuffle feature, Play Something, followed by the Two Thumbs Up button in 2022. The streamer discontinued the “Surprise Me” shuffle feature in 2023.
