Invincible Fight Girl will soon be making its highly anticipated debut with Adult Swim, and we got to talk with series creator Juston-Gordon Montgomery all about the new series ahead of its premiere. Invincible Fight Girl has been in production for quite a while, and was one of the animated series left in flux during all of the changes happening at Warner Bros. Discovery over the years. But thankfully, it’s gearing up to finally make its debut after all this time and soon fans will be treated to a new kind of action series mixing the fun of anime and wrestling together into a new experience.

As Invincible Fight Girl is finally going to make its premiere on Saturday, November 2nd at midnight with Adult Swim with its first two episodes (and then streaming with Max the next day), ComicBook got the chance to speak with series creator Juston-Gordon Montgomery about the new action series. Montgomery opened up about the anime influences that went into the new animated series, incorporating wrestling into the storytelling, that tease about its power system and more. Read on below for our full interview (which has been edited for clarity).

Adult Swim

NICK VALDEZ, COMICBOOK: I first remember [Invincible Fight Girl] being announced back in 2022, and it’s probably been in development long before that. So how do you feel seeing it that it’s going to finally premiere on Toonami, the big anime showcase block for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim?

JUSTON-GORDON MONTGOMERY: It’s surreal. It sort of surpassed my wildest hopes and expectations. I think when I started this project, it was just an opportunity to create maybe a different type of show that we had seen in the West, and do something that who knows how big of an impact it would it would have. It would be something different in the space. So the fact that it’s been sort of elevated to this level where it’s gonna be viewable by everyone and it’s gonna be on Toonami, this place where that personally kind of has a lot of meaning for me. It feels surreal. It’s not something that if you would ask me in 2022, I would have said it was in the cards for us, yeah.

Toonami feels perfect for it too because, as you just mentioned, it’s got kind of like an anime flow to it that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in an action cartoon over here in terms of inner monologues, a lot of dust thrown up everywhere, stuff like that. And so I wanted to know, what are some of your direct anime influences that went into how you’ve laid out this show, and its action, and its world?

MONTGOMERY: Dragon Ball Z is a place that I always start, because that’s kind of like the granddaddy, just for tone, for intensity. You may have noticed some of our sound effects are even kind of like…we’re dog whistling to people who know that a little bit to be like, “Hey, you hear that sort of flying sound?” But then as we sort of get into kind of the genetic makeup of the show, Naruto is a big, big place that I start personally. That being one of the first anime outside of Dragon Ball Z as a kid that I found, and just being sort of mystified by this blend of sort of goofiness and at the same time, like, really heavy adult themes.

You know, we’re deal dealing with this main character who has this insane, oppressive loneliness that he feels, and he’s ostracized from his community. And at the same time, has to constantly sort of do this, to your point of the inner monologue, he has to constantly self talk to get himself to this place that he can be like, “No, I am gonna be someone that people respect. I am gonna achieve this dream that seems improbable and impossible” and the world view, world building of that.

One Piece, same for that world building. Hunter x Hunter is a big one as well. That was more of a recent sort of discovery for me, like, in the past 4 years. And as someone who had watched a lot of anime and for some reason had missed that, and had even seen Yu Yu Hakusho, I don’t know how I missed it. I was just so blown away by the twists and turns and the ways that the show almost seemed to be speaking to people who viewed Shonen and being like, “I know what you think is gonna happen. I’m deliberately gonna subvert that.” Oh, you think we’re gonna follow these characters? Nope. We’re gonna cut away to this other side of the world. We’re gonna follow these guys.

And you’re gonna be like, “Who the hell are these people? Why am I following them?” And then you’ll be like, “Ah, shit. This is really compelling. Okay.” What’s gonna happen, you know? So that was big. Just as a way of even rethinking what it meant to make a show and what it meant to create the focus of a show, world building, and the intricate-ness and all of that stuff. Then finally, I would say Hajime no Ippo was a massive one. As someone who loves boxing myself, I did boxing for a lot of years.

The show is beautiful in its ability to, whether you are familiar with boxing or not, convey to you the stakes and the why everything is meaningful, and the struggle, and the grind of it all. Again, whether or not you have a background to understand boxing or not. And so just that storytelling ability was huge in us looking at that and being like, well, we’re doing something like wrestling where, obviously, we want people who have a background and understand it to be able to appreciate it, but we sort of assume that a lot of our audience might not. So we want to convey to them why things are meaningful, why wrestling is awesome, but why moment to moment certain things they should feel a certain way about.

Adult Swim

That’s interesting too because, wrestling is also a very much a storytelling focused art. And so, what era in particular of wrestling were you drawn to the most? Are you keeping up with anything right now by chance?

Not as much now. For me, my kind of formative era was Attitude Era. I’m a nineties kid. So, it was interesting too because that, to my perception, was when wrestling really kind of occupied a lot of the public spotlight. You know, even people who weren’t into it. It was kind of inescapable. It was sort of a perfect time for me as a kid to find it. There was something about the pageantry and the heights to which they would push the storytelling. The characters, the personas, and mistakes that felt, to your point, like a type of storytelling that was rivaling and surpassing anything that we could see that was written in terms of TV shows, sitcoms, movies or anything like that.

It’s cool seeing Andy too because Andy is such a character that combines all of that. She’s got the underdog wrestling story as well as that Shonen hero vibe of wanting her to overcome and eventually achieve her dreams. So what went into developing Andy as your main character for this series?

Andy, I like to sort of think of her as this stand in for the spirit of youth. So in this sort of grand metaphor that is the show where we’re talking about people following their dreams and following their passions, I think that there’s a sort of universal truth in anything that you pursue. There’s you kind of coming into this space that you’re unaware of, and then there’s the space itself, the institution that has these pre-established hierarchies. It has these dynamics. It has these big top dominant players already. Everything is sort of already sorted out.

Then here’s you who’s coming into the space as a young person who has to sort of fight for your spot. And a lot of that, I think, has to do with this sort of audaciousness. The audacity of youth and the hunger of youth. The ability to, while you have reverence for what came before, also kind of be ignorant of it and be like as a boxer, “Yeah, one day, I am gonna be as good as or better than Mayweather.” I think once you’ve lived a little bit, those sorts of claims seem kind of crazy.

But for young people who are looking to sort of establish themselves and make their mark, that is their lifeblood. That’s what fuels them. And so to me, that is Andy. Andy is that sort of young, audacious hunger that has this reverence for this world that exists already, is fascinated by it, is in love with it, and at the same time, is like “I’m gonna come in and find my way to be out on top of it.” There’s a combination of lots of different complex things that have to go into someone to be able to say that and stick to that. They experience a lot of different obstacles and adversity, still push through and decide, “Yes, this dream is something that’s possible for me.”

Adult Swim

Speaking of dreams Quesa Poblana — great name, by the way — she’s got an aura. Speaking to how we talked Dragon Ball Z and One Piece earlier, she has a literal aura that has the kind of Dragon Ball Z visual and sound. Then it’s got a little bit of the One Piece Haki with just basically knocking everybody else out. So as a tease for the future, is this something that Andy can potentially do? Is it just specific to Poblana? Is this something that if Andy’s able to train, she can unlock?

Flat out, I would say yes. I think, for audiences who catch it, we are teasing a power system that exists in this world. Quesa Poblana is not the only one who can do it. She’s just the only one that we’ve seen do it. Andy will eventually get there, but there’s a bit of a secret to it beyond just developing your strength to a certain level. Quesa Poblana is kind of like a great window in our world, into what some of the higher level matches and higher level battles will be. So she exists both as a character and as a window into what the ceiling of this world looks like. How much room there is between that and where Andy, and some of the people she’s fighting, are currently.

We have finally come to the end of The Witches’ Road, but there was one more loss for the coven at the end. Wednesday night’s two-episode finale of Agatha All Along was packed with revelations about the Road, the witches on it, and even what might be next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but all of those revelations came with a price: one more witch met her end and this time, it could have major implications going forward. Warning: spoilers for the finale of Agatha All Along beyond this point. Read on only if you really want to know.

In the end, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) did not survive the adventure undertaken in the series, with the seemingly invincible and scheming witch finally taken out. However, it wasn’t the Road that killed Agatha nor was it a failed trial, or anything like that, really. Instead, Agatha went to Death willingly — and it turns out, the end for the legendary witch is only the beginning of the story. Picking up after last week’s trial which saw Lilia (Patti LuPone) sacrifice herself to end the Salem Seven, Agatha is back on the road and comes face to face with Rio (Aubrey Plaza), aka Death. It turns out that all along, Agatha has been distracting Rio from Death’s real target: Billy (Joe Locke). It turns out that, per Rio, Billy is an abomination who has messed with the “sacred balance” by taking a second life and she has to stop him from doing the same for Tommy. You see, it turns out that Tommy hasn’t been reborn yet and Billy’s mission to find his brother is a problem. Agatha ends up making Rio a deal: since Rio can’t kill Billy because he’d just reincarnate, he has to turn himself over to Death willingly. Agatha says she’ll get him to do so, but only if Rio stops pursuing her. Rio agrees.

[RELATED: Agatha All Along Finale Reveals Shocking Truth About The Witches’ Road]

Agatha, Billy, and Jen (Sasheer Zamata) continue on the Road to the final trial which sees Jen realize that Agatha was the witch who bound her and thus, Jen unbinds herself. But Agatha tells Billy about Tommy and the fact that he needs a body to enter and, during the final trial Agatha guides Billy through finding a vessel for Tommy, causing Billy to “complete” his trial and disappear. Agatha ends up also completing her trial but she ends up facing Death who isn’t thrilled that Billy wasn’t delivered to her. A fight ensues, Billy shows up — fully in his power — and aids Agatha by giving her some of his power. Agatha then appears to turn on Billy again, revealing her deal with Rio but when Billy reaches out to Agatha mentally to ask if this is how her own son died, Agatha does something unexpected: she kisses Rio and it is a literal Kiss of Death. Agatha dies, sacrificing herself for Billy.

But the story doesn’t end there. The final episode reveals Billy coming to the realization that he created The Witches’ Road and that realization comes with a surprise visitor: Agatha, as a ghost. Agatha reveals that before Billy, the Road really was just a myth, a lie, a con Agatha created centuries ago to kill witches and take their power. When Billy fully grasps that his manifesting the Road means he killed Mrs. Hart, Alice, and Lilia, he finds himself enraged and sets out to banish Agatha. He stops, however, when the ghost of Agatha reveals why she doesn’t want to simply move on to the afterlife: she doesn’t want to face her son. It leads to a tender moment between Billy and Agatha, with Billy saying he thinks Nicholas will forgive her, but ultimately, Agatha suggests that she and Billy would make a good team, with Agatha serving as a mentor of sorts for Billy. The episode — and series — ends with Billy sealing off the Road and Agatha announcing “let’s go find Tommy” as the two head out into the world together.

It’s a major development to be sure, not just because Agatha dies, but because Agatha (as a ghost) teaming up with Billy sets into motion the possibility for Marvel to, in the aim of looking for Tommy, set up the Young Avengers or even take on an adaptation of The Children’s Crusade. It also sets Agatha up to be more in keeping with her comic book counterpart in that she’s now in a position to train Billy with his magic — in comics, Agatha trained Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the art of magic. With Agatha, to an extent, redeemed, the possibilities are somewhat endless as to where the MCU can go with the character and it will be interesting to see play out.

Agatha All Along is now streaming on Disney+.

New Japan Pro Wrestling has announced that former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega is set for an appearance at their upcoming Power Struggle event in November. Omega, who has been out of action since December 2023 battling a severe case of Diverticulitis, has not appeared in Japan since New Year’s Dash 2023 — last January. “The Best Bout Machine” has been spotted training as of late adding hope that his in-ring return could be just around the corner.

Omega’s last appearance on AEW television resulted in him getting a severe beat down from his former Elite stablemates and best friends, the Young Bucks. Despite him being injured, he invoked his EVP powers to set up a match at AEW Double or Nothing this past May.

Seeds have been planted for his return, and he himself has recently called out Matthew and Nicholas Jackson alongside NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi, one of Omega’s greatest rivals. The decorated veteran tag team explained they’ll be at Wrestle Dynasty — a huge collaboration pay-per-view between AEW, NJPW, CMLL, ROH and STARDOM.

It seems fairly likely that when he does back his return to wrestling in the states, one last match with Kazuchika Okada will be imminent. While they’ve had barnburners in Japan, that match has yet to take place in the U.S. and in AEW for that matter, and it would definitely be a huge attraction.

Omega reflected on his wrestling return in an interview with New Japan Pro Wrestling, explaining that he believes he can still be a top performer when the day comes. “Knowing just the weight that was on my shoulders of being the position that I was in for that company [AEW], here we had someone [Okada] that took everything out of me,” Omega said. “Everything; it took every ounce of my being to finally defeat for a major belt in this company and he’s coming here 100%, with only the wrestling to have to worry about. I looked at that man as a monster, and I can’t lie, I was scared. I can’t face this guy as current Kenny Omega.

So maybe by the Young Bucks putting me out and allowing me to step back and refocus on bringing myself back as the wrestler that I know that I can be, taking the mental burden away of being an EVP, just for a little bit, to focus on what is it that I have to do to get back to that level, I feel like the ghost of my past and the skeletons in my closet have all followed me back to this stage, and although getting sick in the way that I did set me back almost a year now, it’s almost a blessing in disguise because it really allows you to assess things in a different way, and it allows you to prioritize the things you should be prioritizing, and I feel that when I do come back, I can come back with a clear head space and possibly be a top-flight performer again.”

AEW’s special Fright Night edition of Dynamite held a few welcome surprises, including a very unexpected change for the AEW Tag Team Championships. It wasn’t until the end of the episode though that the biggest change occurred, and it all went down after a match between Shelton Benjamin and Swerve Strickland. Strickland would come out victorious, and MVP made a quick call that would bring out the former WWE All Mighty superstar Bobby Lashley. Lashley would come out to the ring and confront Strickland before delivering a monster clothesline that knocked out Strickland cold. The Hurt Syndicate would then stand tall in the ring to close out Dynamite.

Benjamin and Strickland had a great match on tonight’s Dynamite, with a number of near falls. It seemed that Benjamin would emerge victorious with a big win under his belt early on in his AEW tenure, but Strickland was not to be denied, and would end up getting the win. MVP went to work quickly after though, and that’s when the chaos started.

MVP made the phone call and caused Strickland’s celebration in the middle of the ring to be cut short. Lashley then came out and headed towards the ring, and MVP was all too happy to rush back in and bring his new ally face to face with the former AEW World Champion. Lashley then went to work and knocked Swerve to the mat with a clothesline, and that was just the start of a chaotic finish.

After Strickland was knocked down, MVP choked Nana with his cane before throwing him into a stiff kick from Benjamine. Then Lashley grabbed Strickland and locked in a full nelson, knocking Swerve out cold. AEW officials came running out to the ring to restore order, but Benjamin and Lashley were simply destroying them as they hit the ring.

It was quite the finish to Dynamite, and also the launch of a new powerhouse faction within AEW. Lashley and Benjamin are now part of the Hurt Syndicate, though that doesn’t mean the group is done recruiting. MVP has been going around and talking to quite a few members of the AEW roster since his debut, inviting them to work with him and his then emerging faction.

That included stars like Mercedes Mone and even Strickland, though he turned it down. That decision has clearly led to some of the animosity from MVP, and now Lashley is here to make sure Swerve doesn’t get back up. One thing we’ve learned about Swerve though is you can never keep him down for long.

According to Fightful Select, Lashley was signed shortly before MVP debuted in AEW at Grand Slam back in September, and at one point the debut was expected to happen at WrestleDream. Those plans clearly changed, as Bryan Danielson would close out the event in a memorable confrontation with Jon Moxley. Now the debut has happened with Full Gear on the horizon, so it would seem we are building to a match between Lashley and Strickland at the pay-per-view.

Are you excited for Lashley in AEW, and what did you think of the debut? You can talk all things wrestling with me on Threads and Twitter @mattaguilarcb!

Agatha All Along (2024)

In the age of streaming it’s never clear when a new TV show will come back for more episodes or not, and Marvel’s shows on Disney+ are no different. As shows like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Hawkeye came to a close, fans waited to see if there would be a quick confirmation or any news about future seasons, to date Marvel’s Loki is the only live-action show to confirm that it had been renewed for additional episodes at the end of its first season. So here we are once again, wondering and asking ourselves if Agatha All Along will come back for a season 2 on Disney+, and the answer seems concrete, but is it?

The entire time that Marvel Studios and Disney have been marketing Agatha All Along it’s been using very specific language and key phrasing, “mini-series.” Even before it premiered, Marvel’s plans for Agatha All Along were for it to arrive as a one-and-done batch of nine episodes that told a complete story. With the final two chapters now streaming, we can safely say they managed that.

Of note however is the fact that Agatha All Along was a series born exclusively from the fact that Marvel fans and the general public responded so favorably to Kathryn Hahn’s portrayal of Agatha Harkness in WandaVision. That in mind, though a season 2 of Agatha All Along does not appear to be in the cards at all, plans could very quickly change at Marvel Studios and another story featuring Agatha, or another character from Agatha All Along starring in their own show.

Another nail in the coffin of the potential for Agatha All Along season 2 comes from series creator Jac Schaeffer. Having previously spearheaded WandaVision and now Agatha, Schaeffer is no stranger to crafting a singular story that is told across one season and concluded, and she’s been speaking the same way about Agatha All Along ahead of its premiere as she did with WandaVision.

“I think a lot of people talk about, in a TV show, [they] can spend so much more time with these characters, but that’s not the thrill for me,” Schaeffer told Script Mag. “The thrill for me is I can really take the audience’s hand and lead them on a journey that makes them want to come back week to week. It’s also why I haven’t yet made a multi-season show, because I throw everything into that season. I’m like this. These are all my tricks. You get them all in this limited series. Which has been really fun so far.”

Agatha All Along is now streaming in full on Disney+ alongside WandaVision.

Marvel’s Wolverine‘s has lost its creative director to one of Xbox’s most highly anticipated exclusives. Insomniac Games is one of the most respected studios in the gaming industry having made games like Ratchet & Clank, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Resistance. The studio really made a name for itself with Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018 when it made one of the most well-regarded superhero games of all-time and a generation defining exclusive for PlayStation. The studio has gone on to expand its ambitions with even more Marvel games in its future, including Marvel’s Wolverine. The game was announced in 2021 alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but outside of some big leaks, there hasn’t been any major official updates from Insomniac Games.

Wolverine is expected to still be a couple years out from release and a notable portion of the game’s story leaked online in addition to gameplay when Insomniac Games was hacked last year. Sadly, there’s more unfortunate news for Marvel’s Wolverine. Game File has reported that game’s creative director, Brian Horton, left Insomniac Games over the summer to pursue a different project: Xbox’s Perfect Dark. Sony confirmed the news to Game File and noted that Horton was replaced by Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart creative director Marcus Smith. Marvel’s Wolverine‘s game director Cameron Christian (different from creative director) has also stepped back from the project, but will remain at Insomniac Games. Game File noted that this was a result of changes regarding the creative direction of Marvel’s Wolverine.

Horton previously helmed Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales for Insomniac Games and had made teases about the new game on social media over the years. An Xbox rep told Game File that Horton will be “bringing his wealth of experience to the upcoming reboot of the classic secret agent series.” The shooter had its first gameplay reveal over the summer and left fans really impressed, but it’s unclear how far into development it is. Nevertheless, it’s a big win for Xbox as it will likely only strengthen an already great looking game and give the console a successful big exclusive that fans have been eagerly awaiting.

perfect-dark.png
Xbox’s perfect dark reboot

Marvel’s Wolverine on the other hand feels like a rare struggle for Insomniac Games. The developer is known for churning out high quality games at a rapid pace without overworking its staff. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had some production issues as well, partially as a result of COVID disrupting the game’s development. Insomniac Games had to scale back a large portion of its plans for the game in order to hit its deadline which resulted in a more streamlined story and major gameplay elements such as destructible environments being cut from the final release.

It’s possible the hack last year led to Insomniac Games pivoting on the direction of Marvel’s Wolverine, but it’s not totally known. Either way, hopefully this doesn’t lead to a major delay to Marvel’s Wolverine. The game ramped up production last year around the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, allowing developers to move over from the wall-crawler’s latest adventure to Wolverine’s first gaming outing in nearly 20 years. With that said, the game is deep into development and it’s unclear how much can really be changed at this point without undoing a ton of work.

PlayStation itself has also changed its strategy on how it reveals its games. It seems that the company only likes to really showcase its games when they’re closer to release, so it may be another year or two before we get another glimpse at Marvel’s Wolverine. However, there are rumors it could pop up sooner. Hopefully the game manages to find its way through a rougher part of development and turn out well on the other side.

The Scarlet Witch hasn’t been around in the MCU for a couple of years, since her death at the conclusion of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But that hasn’t stopped Wanda Maximoff from looming large over the events of Agatha All Along. Not only was Wanda the creator of the Westview anomaly, kick-starting Agatha’s journey, but so much of this show’s story is actually about Billy, one of Wanda’s sons.

The children that Wanda created managed to escape the hex as it fell, and Billy’s soul took up residence in the body of a teenager who had just died in a car accident. This is what ultimately sent Billy on the Witches’ Road, as he wants to find out what became of his brother, Tommy.

At the center of all this is Wanda’s legacy, which has caused plenty of fans to wonder if the Scarlet Witch would be making some sort of MCU return in Agatha All Along. Well, the final two episodes of Marvel’s newest TV venture hit Disney+ Wednesday night, answering that question once and for all. WARNING: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Agatha All Along! Unfortunately for longtime fans of the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff doesn’t appear in the final episode of Agatha All Along. There is a moment where Billy thinks back to his final moments in Westview and you can hear Wanda’s voice in his head. Outside of that one line of dialogue (which was brought over from WandaVision), there was no Wanda to be found.

All that to say, Wanda’s fingerprints were all over the show. The biggest twist of Agatha All Along was directly connected to the story of Wanda Maximoff. We learned in the final minutes of the series that it was Billy who actually created the Witches’ Road, though he didn’t mean to. He and the coven were taken on this journey, which was created in his own mind (based on things around his bedroom). The Witches’ Road is basically Billy’s Westview, but now he gets the chance to make up for that massive display of power going forward.

Most importantly, the door for Wanda’s return is absolutely not closed. If anything, it’s more open than ever before, now that we know how Billy and Death’s powers work. If another popular fan theory is to be believed, Wanda might already be back.

Agatha All Along (2024)

Marvel fans fully expect a post-credits scene whenever a new movie or TV show in the MCU arrives, and the Disney+ series Agatha All Along is no different. Though previous Marvel Studios TV shows on the streamer have had scenes in the credits in various episodes, Agatha All Along has not had any up to this point. With a two-episode series finale now streaming the question has to be asked and considered, does Agatha All Along‘s series finale have a post-credits scene? Spoilers follow!

In short, the answer is no. There is no post-credits scenes in either of the final two episodes of Agatha All Along. This arrives in contrast to a few other Marvel shows on Disney+ including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Echo, all of which had credits scenes. Agatha All Along joins Secret Invasion as being one of the only Marvel shows with no credits scenes in any episodes.

Just because Agatha All Along doesn’t have a post-credits scenes doesn’t mean that the series doesn’t tease a new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the series wraps up, Agatha has died but has become a ghost, however she has a new role, guiding Billy in their new coven with a very specific mission at hand, finding his brother Tommy.

Agatha All Along may not have a post-credits scene but the series clearly sets up what’s next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Billy searching for his brother Tommy, Marvel Studios could not more obviously be hinting at the fact that the Young Avengers are coming. As Marvel fans may recall, the team was previously alluded to at the end of The Marvels when Kamala Khan decides to start a group of her own, moving to recruit Kate Bishop to the team.

In the pages of Marvel Comics the Young Avengers team has naturally included Billy/Wiccan, Tommy/Speed, Kate Bishop/Hawkeye, and America Chavez, with other members including Iron Lad, Kid Loki, Hulkling, Prodigy, Patriot, Noh-Varr, and others. Though Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel hasn’t been a member of the Young Avengers, she has appeared on the Champions, which is a similar team and one that may inspire the MCU team in the end as well. It’s unclear who might make it on the team when the Young Avengers finally do appear in the MCU, but Kamala Khan, Billy, Tommy, and Kate Bishop are all very safe bets.

To date Agatha All Along has been publicized as a mini-series for Disney+, with no indication from Marvel Studios that this plan has changed, so it seems unlikely that a second season of the show will ever get made, perhaps another reason why a post-credit scene wasn’t used.

All nine episodes of Agatha All Along are now streaming on Disney+.

We’ve finally come to the end of The Witches’ Road with the Agatha All Along finale and while the last two episodes of the Marvel series held quite a few revelations about Billy, Agatha, and even the very Road itself, the episodes also gave fans an answer to what might have been the biggest question of all. That’s right, the final episodes of Agatha All Along finally answered the question of whether Mephisto would finally be introduced to the MCU and it might not be the answer you’re expecting. Warning: Spoilers for the final episodes of Agatha All Along beyond this point.

Despite getting a name drop earlier in the season, Mephisto once again does not show up. We are once again left wanting when it comes to Marvel’s devil. Instead, the only spooky or even lightly sinister thing we get in the finale — and indeed in all of Agatha All Along — is Death herself. Looks like we are once again going to be sitting here waiting at the proverbial station, waiting for the Mephisto train to come.

agatha-all-along-mephisto-wandavision-darkhold-theories-mcu.jpg

Now that we are finally at this moment, it feels like we’ve been on this journey — or the Mephisto train, if you will — for years. Speculation that the devilish character was involved in the overall story of Westview has persisted since WandaVision where there were countless theories that Mephisto was actually behind Wanda Maximoff’s actions in Westview as the series antagonist. That, however, ended up not being the case when it was revealed that Wanda was creating the hex on her own but her real antagonist was none other than Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) who does not appear to have been influenced by anything other than her own lust for power.

Speculation that Mephisto might show up for the WandaVision spinoff started pretty early on as well, but really ramped up when a teaser for Agatha All Along showed Teen/Billy Kaplan (Joe Locke) with a sigil over his mouth preventing Agatha (and others) from hearing his real name. Many fans speculated that the sigil, which looked like an M, signified Mephisto complete with the suggestion that perhaps Mephisto was keeping Billy’s identity under wraps. And by the time we actually got a Mephisto name drop in episode 3 of the series, fans were more convinced than ever we’d be seeing the character by series’ end — and even showrunner Jac Schaeffer encouraged fans to keep their eyes open by reminding just how tied to Agatha’s story Mephisto really is in comics.

“With these shows, so often there is something that is at once a joke and a wink and a nod, and actually has something legitimate underneath it,” Schaeffer said previously. “As we all know, Mephisto is a character who’s very wrapped into Agatha’s storyline. I mean, people have to watch, but we’re always playing with the audience in that way.”

Now that we are finally here with the real answer about Mephisto, we can also start looking ahead to what’s next. A third Doctor Strange film seems like the next logical place for a character like Mephisto to appear, though at this point everything about Doctor Strange 3 is currently a rumor — including reports that Sam Raimi, who previously directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which itself had direct ties to WandaVision, would be returning to direct. We could also potentially see Mephisto in the other WandaVision spinout, the Vision series, thought that might be a little less likely. Wherever things do end up going, the revelation in the final episodes of Agatha All Along do offer up some potential for the character as the MCU continues.

Agatha All Along is now streaming on Disney+.

Black Clover’s manga will be returning with the next few chapters of its final arc, and it really needs to avoid Jujutsu Kaisen’s mistakes if it wants to stick the landing. Black Clover has been in the midst of the manga’s final arc for the past year or so. Series creator Yuki Tabata shifted away from Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine’s weekly release schedule to a new quarterly release schedule for Jump GIGA magazine. This has resulted in hefty updates for the manga’s final chapters in the year thus far, and the next update will bring us closer to the grand finale than ever before.

Black Clover will be returning with three new chapters on November 15th in Japan, and it will feature 61 pages in total. What has also been teased is that it will be featuring the “final battle” for the series overall. It’s yet to be explained as to whether or not the manga will be starting the final battle with this update, or be entirely focused on it, but what is clear is that the manga will be coming to an end fairly soon. So it really needs to make sure to avoid doing what Jujutsu Kaisen did as it ended if it wants to be a hit with fans.

Shueisha

What Happened With Jujutsu Kaisen?

Jujutsu Kaisen wasn’t the only Shonen Jump series to end this year, but it probably had the more notorious ending. It’s all because it felt incredibly rushed. It was suddenly announced that the series would be ending five chapters ahead of its actual ending, and it seemingly came out of nowhere because it really did. The final arc didn’t seem like it would be the final one as the fight against Sukuna still had lingering bigger threats overhead.

The biggest issue of that finale was the fact that it introduced a ton of new characters in the later arcs only to then not only many of them to have a proper resolution. It just all felt like it was cut short despite it being series creator Gege Akutami’s intention. So thanks to all of the questions left unanswered, fans had felt like the ending didn’t hit its mark. There just wasn’t enough time to be properly ready for that ending, and ultimately it’s why the series ended so divisively. At the end of the day, there just wasn’t enough time spent getting ready for the grand finale. Thankfully, Black Clover has already avoided this.

Black Clover Won’t Have the Same Problem

It’s hard to gauge whether or not Black Clover will have a truly satisfying ending when it comes to tying up its own loose ends, but it’s already got a head start at making sure it avoids Jujutsu Kaisen’s biggest mistake. Black Clover has been in the midst of its final arc for quite a while. Even before it shifted its scheduled to quarterly releases, the manga had been spending the better part of a year properly setting the stage for the final battles to come.

Jujutsu Kaisen‘s issue was that it didn’t properly fill out the scope of its finale. The final arc didn’t feel like one because the fight against Sukuna initially seemed like it was only the first phase of something bigger to come instead of the single fight it turned out to be. But Black Clover has properly avoided this with a steady amount of build up for its own grand finale. The series’ last few arcs have been setting the stage for what’s to come as Asta and the others have been facing off against the Zogratis siblings. And once they were defeated, a final reveal had unleashed a final sibling.

This led to a first string of fights as the members of the Spade Kingdom invaded the Clover Kingdom, and even had Asta in the midst of a final training arc before these fights began. Then as the final arc kicked in fully, there were even bigger opponents to deal with from that point. There was a steady incline in growth, and with it fans were able to properly prepare for the end. Now that each chapter this year has been so meaty in length as well, Black Clover has really been setting up for its grand finale.

This means there will be fewer chances for leftover questions or loose ends when Black Clover finally wraps. It’s already doing the work to make sure it doesn’t have the same divisive conclusion that Jujutsu Kaisen did, and now it just needs to make sure that its actual finale really does stick the landing at the end of the day. It’s almost there, it just needs to end in a satisfying way. A big ask for sure, but one that Black Clover seems ready to take on.

All season on Agatha All Along, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and her coven have been walking The Witches’ Road, a mythical path in magic that, per the lore, grants any witch who survives its trials and makes it to the end the thing they desire most. In fact, The Witches’ Road is so legendary that there have been songs written about it — Lorna Wu’s “Ballad of The Witches’ Road” — and Agatha, as the Road’s only known survivor, has a bit of legendary status of her own. But now, with the two-episode finale of the Disney+ series, a shocking truth about the Road has been revealed and it’s something that changes how we see everything about the series. Warning: Spoilers for the finale of Agatha All Along beyond this point. Read on only if you want to know.

agatha-all-along-witches-road.jpg

As it turns out, The Witches’ Road has legend status because it is exactly that: a legend. It is revealed that The Witches’ Road doesn’t actually exist, or more accurately, did not exist until Billy (Joe Locke) willed it into existence with his powers, creating his own sort of “hex” to manifest it. The revelation that The Witches’ Road was never real also has a revelation of its own tucked into it. Agatha has, indeed, been lying for centuries about her experience with the road. The reality is much grimmer: the Road was a story created by Agatha to use in order to steal the powers of other witches for herself. We saw a peek of this earlier in the season, when Agatha gathered this current, makeshift coven and then tried to prompt them into blasting her with their powers. Agatha knew that she couldn’t open a gate to the Road because it didn’t exist. It was a fiction from the start.

This also explains a comment Rio (Aubrey Plaza) made in Episode 4, where she tells Agatha that she can get the powers of the other witches and she will get the bodies. We already knew that there was an existing relationship between Agatha and Rio, but now knowing that Rio is Death and Agatha was scamming witches to take their power (and their lives) for centuries, it’s a whole new dimension towards that relationship.

Of course, the reveal that The Witches’ Road wasn’t real also adds some new dimension to other aspects of the series we’ve seen. Since the Road itself was a myth created by Agatha, she knew from the start that whatever they were walking was likely of Billy’s creation, she just simply went along with it. This also means that the little details that many fans picked up on as the Road spread out in front of them each episode were genuinely clues — and by this we specifically mean the details that showed the Road to be very Billy-coded, such as the fictional witches, the horror movie-themed trial and more. And of course, there’s the largest implication of them all: Agatha knew pretty early on that Billy was Wanda’s son and to an extent suggests that she went along with things with the hope of taking Billy’s powers for her own, much like she planned to do with Wanda in WandaVision.

What is particularly interesting What is particularly interesting about the revelation that Billy created the Road is that we also get the history of how the concept of the Road came to be. The finale takes viewers back into Agatha’s history where it’s revealed that when she gives birth to Nicholas, she’s told by Death that all she can give her is time — meaning that the boy is going to die. While it is not expressly stated that Agatha has an existing arrangement with Death to kill witches, we soon see Agatha going about the business of doing just that with her young son in tow, indeed even utilizing him in the scheme. As they walk along together, young Nicky starts singing a song that eventually becomes the Ballad, and in turn, becomes the legend of the Road that Agatha uses to lure in witches that she kills for their power.

Billy’s realization — and Agatha’s confirmation — that the Road wasn’t real until he made it so not only hints at Billy starting to come into his true power, but also ultimately sets him on a different sort of journey. When Agatha dies to spare him Death (though Agatha later insists she didn’t sacrifice herself, you know, just Agatha being Agatha here), she returns to Billy as a ghost unwilling to transition so she doesn’t have to face her son. It puts her in a position to be his guide — and the two are now a coven of their own off on a new impossible mission: find Tommy.

One of Agatha All Along's biggest mysteries has finally been solved.

Halfway through Marvel’s Agatha All Along, MCU fans learned the surprising fate of Wanda Maximoff’s children. While she created them as part of the Westview anomaly, their souls became real and escaped the hex as it fell. Billy was able to inhabit the body of a teenage boy who’d just died in a car accident, but he had no idea what had happened to his twin brother, Tommy.

Unlike Billy, Tommy hasn’t been a main character on Agatha All Along, leaving fans to wonder if his twin brother would ever actually find him or not. Billy’s entire purpose on the Witches’ Road has been to figure out where Tommy’s soul ended up, so the two could reunite and once again be a family. On Wednesday night, the Agatha All Along finale arrived on Disney+, finally revealing what became of Wanda’s other son.

WARNING: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Agatha All Along! Continue reading at your own risk…

Early on in the eighth episode of Agatha All Along, Death reveals to Agatha that Tommy didn’t find his second life quite as easily as Billy did. She attempts to make a deal with Agatha to get Billy to surrender his soul, because she doesn’t believe he was supposed to get that second opportunity at all.

Both Agatha and Death know that Billy has the power to give Tommy a second life, should he be able to locate the lost soul of his brother. Agatha, after making a deal with Death, helps Billy search through the ether to find a body for Tommy to inhabit. He locates a boy who is drowning and seemingly sends Tommy’s soul into the body. This action completes Billy’s journey on the Witches’ Road, sending him back to reality and leaving Agatha all alone.

There’s a lot that happens between that scene and the full, official Tommy reveal, but Agatha All Along does bring it all full-circle. Well, sort of.

In the very last scene of Agatha All Along, Billy is joined by Agatha’s ghost, who tells him, “Let’s go find Tommy.” So whatever Billy did back on the Witches’ Road to get Tommy’s soul into a new body must have actually worked. His brother is out there and alive. The only trouble is, Billy isn’t sure where he is.

So whenever we next see Billy in the MCU (and he feels like a potential major character for the franchise going forward), he’ll either be searching for Tommy, or finally reunited with his long lost brother.

Tonight’s special fright night AEW Dynamite included a tag team title match where the Young Bucks once again put their titles on the line against Private Party. The homegrown favorites lost their last encounter just a few weeks ago, upsetting fans that really believed that after five years, it was time for them to win. Heading into this match, if they lost, they’d be forced to split up. Given the fact that all the champions in AEW are currently heel and aligned with The Elite in one way or another, the odds were clearly stacked against the challengers.

The Young Bucks looked as great as ever working in tandem with one another to prevent titles changing hands. They sneakily used Kazuchika Okada to their advantage, distracting the referee and having him piledrive one half of the team. But that wasn’t the end — Marq Quen and Isiah Kassidy weren’t prepared to give up that easily. They eventually pinned the decorated veteran brother tag team, picking up their first AEW Championship win.

The loss seems a bit shocking given Matthew and Nicholas Jackson teased involvement at Wrestle Dynasty that indicated they’d probably still be holding the titles by then. But if they go up against a returning Kenny Omega and a retiring Hiroshi Tanahashi, the match does appear it would benefit more without the titles, as that’s not the revenge that Omega or Tanahashi would seek.

The two tag teams have a ton of history with one another. Their first ever AEW match took place in 2019 and was a launching point for Private Party in AEW. That match led to an unforgettable match during the pandemic that left fans clamoring to see them stand across the ring from one another again. However, for reasons unknown, that didn’t happen until very recently.

The Young Bucks broke the record (once again) for most AEW World Tag Team Championship reigns in April at AEW Dynasty. In their third reign, they’ve taken over AEW as EVPs and the top heel tag team in the division. Holding them for 192 days, they defeated The Don Callis Family, FTR, Blackpool Combat Club and The Acclaimed.

What do you make of the Young Bucks losing the titles? Are you celebrating the Private Party championship win? Let me know your thoughts on X and Bluesky, @haleyanne_! As always, stay tuned to ComicBook for updates on AEW.

Marvel Disney+ trailer

Marvel Studios is looking ahead to 2025. The studio on Wednesday released a sizzle reel for the film and TV projects coming to Disney+ during the remainder of the year and into next year, including Deadpool & Wolverine (streaming in November), the third and final season of What If…? (Dec. 22), and new series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (Jan. 29), Daredevil: Born Again (March 4), Ironheart (June 24), Eyes of Wakanda (Aug. 6), Marvel Zombies (October 2025), and Wonder Man (December 2025).

The Marvel Studios slate for 2025 now includes Captain America: Brave New World (Feb. 14), Thunderbolts* (May 2), and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25), plus the six series teased in the trailer below. (Marvel’s Blade was recently removed from Disney’s release calendar, leaving the Mahershala Ali-fronted reboot without a release date.)

The nine projects follow a relatively light year for Marvel Studios, which released Echo in January, Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97 in March, and Marvel Television’s Agatha All Along in September. Deadpool & Wolverine was the only Marvel Cinematic Universe movie of the year — something that hasn’t happened since The Avengers was Marvel’s lone release in 2012.

The nearly two-minute trailer contains footage that, until now, was kept under wraps or shown only to the convention crowd during Disney’s D23 in August. Included are first looks at Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as actor Simon Williams, a.k.a. Wonder Man, Anthony Ramos as the supernatural supervillain The Hood, Charlie Cox’s new Daredevil suit, and much more. We’ve rounded up every major reveal from the Disney+ teaser below.

Simon Williams, Wonder Man

Abdul-Mateen II is shown wearing a red blazer and glasses with red lenses — a nod to his comic counterpart, who frequently wore a redcoat and red sunglasses over his glowing red eyes.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set during Peter Parker’s (voiced by Hudson Thames) freshman year as a newbie crime-fighting vigilante. The Marvel Animation series was created by Jeff Trammel (AmphibiaThe Owl House, Craig of the Creek), who serves as executive producer with Kevin Feige (X-Men ’97) and Brad Winderbaum (What If…?).

White Tiger, Hidden Gad

Look closely at the TVA monitors and you’ll spot actor Josh Gad (Frozen) in a snippet of footage from Wonder Man, and the street-level vigilante White Tiger (Kamar de los Reyes) in a glimpse at Daredevil: Born Again.

Yusuf Khan’s Marvel Return

Recognize the man who asks Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), “Exactly what kind of a lawyer are you?” It’s Yusuf Khan (Mohan Kapur), father of Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, reprising his role from Ms. Marvel and The Marvels.

Daredevil Villain Muse

The mutated Muse is a sadistic superhuman serial killer whose victims are his “art” — and New York City is his canvas.

Mayor Wilson Fisk

The Daredevil revival is inspired by the Mayor Fisk storyline in the pages of Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s run on Daredevil, and Devil’s Reign, where the Kingpin of Crime used his powers as mayor to make vigilantism a criminal offense — outlawing Daredevil, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and more street-level superheroes. The series also pulls from the Born Again storyline by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli spanning 1986’s Daredevil #227–231, which saw Fisk systematically destroy Matt Murdock’s life after learning his arch-enemy’s secret identity.

The Punisher Reloaded

Jon Bernthal reprises his role as the vigilante Frank Castle, a.k.a. the Punisher, who wages a one-man war against crime to avenge his murdered family. Bernthal first appeared in Daredevil season 2 and last appeared in The Punisher season 2 in 2019. One batch, two batch, penny and dime…

Daredevil vs. Bullseye, Round 2

The mystery opponent seen battling Daredevil in close quarters (in another hallway fight) is former FBI Special Agent Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter (Wilson Bethel), better known as the super-accurate assassin Bullseye. His tactical outfit is inspired by Checchetto’s more recent design from the comics.

Daredevil’s New Costume

The horn-headed hero of Hell’s Kitchen has undergone another redesign after making cameos in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo. Daredevil’s new duds are crimson red with black highlights, but still no sign of the “DD” chest emblem.

Ironheart 2.0

Speaking of new suits: genius inventor Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) is suiting up in the Mark III Ironheart armor in her own Disney+ series. Riri built her Iron Man-like Mark I suit of armor by herself before Shuri (Letitia Wright) gave her the resources to create an upgraded armor — the vibranium-made Mark II — in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The Hood

Anthony Ramos (Hamilton, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) is seen for the first time as Parker Robbins, a.k.a. the supernatural supervillain known as the Hood. In the comics, he was a common criminal who became an Avengers-level threat after stealing a demon’s magical cloak that is empowered by Dormammu, Lord of the Dark Dimension, and enemy of the sorcerer Doctor Strange. In addition to his mystical powers, the Hood possesses a pair of pistols that fire magical bullets.

Alden Ehrenreich as [Spoiler] 2.0?

The trailer introduces Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Oppenheimer) as Joe McGillicuddy, a character who doesn’t have a counterpart in the comics. However, it’s been rumored that Ehrenreich has been cast as — spoiler warningEzekiel “Zeke” Stane, the terrorist son of Jeff Bridges’ Iron Man villain Obadiah Stane: the original Iron Monger.

What If…? Season 3

New footage from the animated anthology series shows a cowboy Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) reunited, and a mecha Captain America. This suggests an episode is inspired by the five-issue series Avengers Mech Strike, where the Steve Rogers of Earth-21443 piloted a star-spangled mech suit.

Marvel Zombies

From the brraaaaains behind What If…? comes Marvel Zombies. The four-episode event series is rated TV-MA, meaning there will be blood, gore, and graphic violence. What If…? adapted Marvel Zombies in the season 1 episode “What If… Zombies?!,” which featured zombified versions of Iron Man, Captain America, the Scarlet Witch, and more of Earth’s undead heroes.

Trevor Slattery’s Third Act

The Hollywood-set Wonder Man has a co-star: actor Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), who posed as the Mandarin in 2013’s Iron Man 3 and was later abducted by the Ten Rings (in the 2014 short film All Hail the King). After Slattery returned in 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, he’ll make another comeback in the new series from Shang-Chi filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton.

Eyes of Wakanda

The trailer only offers a glimpse at the four-part animated Black Panther spinoff series, which “will explore Wakandan history through tales of the brave warriors who traveled the world to collect vibranium artifacts.”

WWE’s Rhea Ripley was violently attacked on this week’s NXT, and now WWE has given a major health update for the fan favorite superstar. Those who tuned into NXT this week saw Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez walking away after a vicious attack on Ripley that left her bleeding and in rough shape. There was quite a bit of blood around her eye after the attack, and now WWE has confirmed that Ripley suffered a fractured right orbital socket, which will put Ripley out of action for “an undisclosed amount of time.”

WWE shared X-Rays of the injury, and according to Fightful those are evidently real x-rays too. While WWE shared the images, Ripley then shared them with red circles highlighting the exact injury. She also had a message for Morgan and Rodriguez, writing, “Mistake no.1 You left me breathing.” You can check out the x-rays above.

The Rundown

If you didn’t watch NXT this week, you’re probably wondering what on earth happened to Ripley. This week’s NXT was a true spotlight on the Women’s Division from beginning to end, including a segment that had Zaria, Stephanie Vaquer, Guilia, Kelani Jordan, and Jordynne Grace standing in the ring opposite Roxanne Perez, Cora Jade, and Fatal Influence’s Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne, and Jazmyn Nyx.

That would end in a collision amongst all 10 women, and the brawl would result in NXT General Manager Ava Raine making a match featuring all 10 women official for next week’s NXT 2300. With the teams set, a later backstage segment showed the face team talking in the locker room, and they were surprised by Ripley. Ripley would lend some encouraging words and root them on, and social media we would see Ripley taking pictures with Grace and Zaria as well.

Unfortunately the good times quickly subsided when Ripley was attacked by her car. This is the latest chapter in the ongoing saga between Ripley and Morgan, who have been feuding for a while now. The bad blood between Morgan and Ripley is going to get worse from here though, as this will be the second time Morgan has put Ripley out of commission.

The Return

The last time was thanks to a flying chair that hit Ripley backstage, and it took a while for Ripley to come back from that. While Ripley was away from Raw, Morgan made a move on Dominik Mysterio, and though it took some time, Morgan eventually won him over, with Mysterio saving Morgan from Ripley’s grasp. Since then Ripley got some revenge by beating Mysterio senseless with a kendo stick while he was hanging from a cage by a chain, though Morgan would get the win in that match thanks to the distraction.

As for when Ripley will return, it would seem that the perfect place for her to return would be the Royal Rumble. Morgan and Rodriguez can feud with other people while Ripley recovers, with an occasional vignette or two to keep the storying relevant. Then a return at Rumble would ignite it once more as WWE heads into WrestleMania. That’s all just conjecture of course, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

We wish Ripley all the best and a speedy recovery.

King of the Hill is now in the works on a new revival series, and it might be the time for Dale Gribble to find out that Joseph isn’t actually his biological son. King of the Hill‘s original run came to as close to perfect of an end as an animated series could hope for. It ended without many mysteries for the rest of the characters, and teased that they would all be heading into a bright future despite the fact that we wouldn’t be following them anymore. Now that King of the Hill is coming back with a new series, there will undoubtedly be shake ups.

Joseph’s parentage had been one of the core side plots for King of the Hill as while Dale had nothing but love for his wife and son, it was made clear early on that his son was actually the biological child of John Redcorn, a man that Nancy Gribble had many affairs with. Despite Dale being so paranoid and untrusting of the world around him, he never really had any doubt that Joseph was his son despite the blatantly obvious happening in front of him. But with the new episodes, this could finally happen and we could see how Dale feels about it all.

20th Television Animation

Will Dale Find Out About Joseph?

According to updates from those involved with the production, King of the Hill‘s new revival series is taking place nearly a decade after the events of the original series. This means that nearly ten years have passed as Joseph continues to age, and John Redcorn himself likely loses patience with the fact that he’s not as involved with his biological son’s life as he wants to be. This was one of the key plot points of the original series between Dale and John, but the two eventually formed a friendship that seemed to temporarily settle things between them.

But ten years is a long, long time. Plenty of changes have been made to the characters in the series that are more than just them all getting older. Joseph himself has always been shown to be curious about why he seems so different from his parents, and an adult aged Joseph is even more likely to have connected the dots eventually. It’s something that even could have happened off-screen in the years ahead of the new series’ stories that we’ll see when they premiere.

20th Television Animation

Why Dale Won’t Care

But the question of whether or not Dale will figure out Nancy cheated on him ultimately won’t matter. While he might feel betrayed by Nancy, Dale has shown nothing but love for his son regardless. As has been seen multiple times through the original King of the Hill series, Dale is a great father. While he has his shortcomings when it comes to seeing eye to eye with his son, the two ultimately share a very close bond. It’s even to the point where Dale was challenged with the idea that Joseph isn’t his biological son directly and he didn’t back down.

In the Season 6 episode, “Of Mice and Little Green Men,” Dale actually confronted the idea that Joseph wasn’t his son. It was in a roundabout way as he believed that aliens had impregnated his wife, and it was Hank that talked him out of giving up. Hank told Dale that he was the one that was around for all of the important moments of Joseph’s life, and thus he was his father. This was what Dale needed, and thus he was able to confidently claim Joseph as his own. In Dale’s way (even convincing himself that he must have been abducted and those are his genes Nancy was implanted with), this was Dale overcoming his doubts that the son in front of him wasn’t his.

So even if he discovers that Joseph isn’t his own biological son, he’s already been through the process of accepting Joseph anyway. He’s already broken through his doubts, and love Joseph as his son either way. It’s not going to change his relationship with his son, and while it might shift things around for his relationships with Nancy and John Redcorn, at the end of the day Dale is still going to love Joseph regardless.

20th Television Animation

Dale Already Might Know, Anyway

There’s also a good chance that Dale already knows about all of this anyway. Along with “Of Mice and Little Green Men” teasing the fact that Dale already suspected Joseph wasn’t his own son, there have been a few key examples that have had Dale put the pieces together on his own. It’s teased that Dale might be too oblivious to truly understand what’s going on in his own (which adds to the tragic irony of his paranoia), but it also could be that he’s already fully accepted the reality and just doesn’t outwardly acknowledge.

The two big examples you can point to for this are Season 7’s “Vision Quest,” as Dale quite literally sees his subconscious telling him that John Redcorn is Joseph’s father. The second is Season 12’s “Untitled Black McCormick Project” where John Redcorn’s surprise daughter appears in the neighborhood and Dale figures out that she shares similar DNA with Joseph. In both cases, his thoughts go so off the mark that he convinces himself that he’s still involved genetically. What these importantly showcase is that deep down, Dale likely understands that Joseph isn’t his own.

So while King of the Hill’s new revival might be where Dale finally pieces together that Joseph isn’t his genetic son, it’s also not the first time he’s discovered this fact. We’ve seen multiple examples of Dale coming face to face with this reality only to brush it off, so it’s likely going to be the same case here. But there’s one big difference this time around, unfortunately, and that’s Johnny Hardwick’s role in the revival overall.

Johnny Hardwick, Dale Gribble’s voice actor, was reportedly only able to record “a couple” of his episodes before his tragic passing. If this big scene were to happen, it might not be in one of these episodes. If Dale is recast for the series’ future, then it’d be weird to then do this kind of story without the famous actor that brought him to life in the first place. This is all such a wild tightrope to walk, but the King of the Hill team is likely very up to the task for the new revival.

Nintendo has released a new dedicated app for mobile devices that is tied entirely to the music of its most popular games. Perhaps more than any other video game publisher, Nintendo is synonymous with the music of its biggest titles. Franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mario Kart, and Fire Emblem are known just as much for their various soundtracks as they are for their compelling gameplay mechanics. Now, Nintendo is looking to make the music of these games more accessible than ever, but of course, has locked its availability behind a slight paywall.

Downloadable now for iOS and Android devices, the Nintendo Music app has released without any prior warning from the Japanese game publisher. Currently, the app features select scores from some of the most popular Nintendo games ever that span platforms like the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, GameCube, and Switch. To use the Nintendo Music app, however, a Switch Online subscription is required. Any version of Switch Online works with the Nintendo Music app, which means that those on lower tiers won’t need to subscribe to the more costly ones to gain access.

“Kick back and enjoy some Nintendo tunes with Nintendo Music, the exclusive smart-device app for Nintendo Switch Online members that lets you stream or download Nintendo soundtracks, create and share playlists, browse music by different categories, and more!” says the app’s description. “Open up Nintendo’s vault of game music and listen to soundtracks from franchises like The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Animal Crossing, with many more on the way.”

As Nintendo mentions, today is only the start of the Nintendo Music app. In the weeks and months ahead, Nintendo plans to add more songs and soundtracks from its history to the app. Just which games might be next to see their soundtracks appear on the Nintendo Music app have yet to be given, but we’ll likely start to learn more soon enough.

How do you feel about the new Nintendo Music app that has been released? Are you going to look to check this out for yourself, or do you not have a Switch Online subscription in order to use it? Be sure to let me know over on social media at @MooreMan12.

Miles Upshur’s journey through Mount Massive Asylum is coming to the big screen thanks to a partnership between Lionsgate and Outlast developer Red Barrels. Bloody Disgusting broke the news that the video game series is headed for the big screen, with longtime series writer JT Petty tapped to work on the screenplay. He isn’t alone in developing the adaptation. Horror veteran Roy Lee, whose other work includes It (2017) and Late Night With The Devil (2024), will join him on the production side.

Outlast‘s reputation is one of tense, heart-pounding atmospheric horror. The first game alone provides enough scares to fuel ten movies, but there’s more to making a film than raw creepiness. That’s nothing new for Lionsgate, the studio behind the James Wan and Leigh Wannel-created SAW franchise that has haunted audiences since 2004. Still, Lee knows exactly what the fans are looking for, and is ready to bring it to life in an entirely new way.

“Its deep, emergent lore has provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that delves into the psychological and physical horrors at the core of the franchise,” Lee revealed in a statement.

Psychological and physical horror is an apt description. Influenced by movies like The Blair Witch Project and REC (and games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent) both Outlast and Outlast 2 feature grotesque and adrenaline-pumping set pieces. Violent psychiatric patients, unhinged cultists, and nightmare creatures haunting your every step are just a brief look at how the series has traumatized players over the years.

We don’t know how close the movie will stick to the classic story beats, but no matter what, this new format will retain all of the macabre spirit of the seminal spooky-time games. Red Barrels Co-founder David Chateauneuf chimed in on the development, delivering high praise for both Lionsgate and Lee.

“As die-hard fans of horror across every medium, at Red Barrels we are great admirers of Roy Lee’s and Lionsgate’s work,” he said. “Horror movies old and new have had an undeniable impact on our franchise over the years, and to now have the opportunity to work on an Outlast film with true horror legends is a dream, or should I say, nightmare, come true.”

A film isn’t the only bold new step for the franchise in recent memory. Last year’s Outlast Trials traded in the deeply isolating feeling of the early games for a subtler kind of collective dread. In that game, up to four players team up to survive the tasks set out for them by a deranged director of a Cold War-era medical facility. While there are more people to share in the misery, it still retained all of the grimy, paralyzing scares that made the first game a hit eleven years ago.

A new medium brings new challenges, but it won’t be shocking if the eventual Outlast movie brings all the same terrifying feelings fans have come to love.

Roy Lee is also a producer on the Minecraft Movie and the upcoming film adaptation of Until Dawn.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has now received its first-ever sale. Upon its launch in early September, Space Marine 2 quickly became both a critical and commercial success. As a result, publisher Focus Entertainment hasn’t been quick to mark the third-person shooter down as it has continued to steadily perform well. Fortunately, for those who have been holding out for a discount of any sort, that has now come about for a limited time.

As of this moment, Space Marine 2 has seen its price fall by 14% and is now being sold for $59.99. While this deal isn’t a big one by any means, it is a $10 price cut as the game normally goes for $69.99. As for the retailers taking part in this promotion, the sale should extend across Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, and Target. It’s also worth noting that since this is a sale tied to retailers, it’s only being offered for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game.

With the holiday season right around the corner, there’s a good chance that better offers for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 will come about before 2024 ends. As a result, you might be better off waiting for those deals to happen a bit closer to Black Friday. If you simply cannot wait any longer to jump into the Space Marine sequel for yourself, though, this current sale might be just for you.

If you’re on the fence when it comes to picking up Space Marine 2 while this offer is ongoing, you can learn more about the game by checking out its launch trailer and synopsis below.

Parker Finn’s Smile 2 made a bigger splash with its opening than the original Smile in 2022 with not only its box-office performance, but also with critics, as the sequel sits at 85% positive reviews compared to the original’s 79% positive. In addition to the sequel earning more attention than the debut movie, the sequel concluded with a more explicit tease that the demonic curse of the franchise was about to be taken to new levels, with Finn recently confirming he’d only be interested in continuing the saga if he could find a way to tell character stories as opposed to delivering cheap scares. He also teased he personally saw a lot of storytelling opportunities for the franchise, though a third film has yet to officially be confirmed. Smile 2 is in theaters now.

“Well, I will say this, I think there are a lot of interesting roads that any future Smile could go down. For me, I love all the stuff that goes bump in the night, and all the really frightening things of the big concept of Smile and the Smiler,” Finn detailed to Collider. “But really, for me, Smile is a vehicle to tell really intense and hopefully thoughtful character stories, and so I’d wanna make sure, regardless of if more than one person might have it, that we still find a way to really invest intimacy into the storytelling. That’s super important to me. But I think there are some really interesting tricks still up the sleeves of Smile.”

The original movie focused on Dr. Rose Cutter (Sosie Bacon) witnessing a client kill themselves in front of her, only for audiences to realize the young woman had become possessed by a supernatural curse. In Smile 2, the curse had made its way to pop singer Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), whose past trauma and guilt manifested the curse in bigger and more horrifying ways.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Smile 2

Part of what sets the sequel apart from the original movie is that, while the debut movie saw the curse passing from one person to another, in the finale of Smile 2, Skye violently kills herself in front of an entire crowd at her concert. It can be assumed that thousands of people in the audience will now be targeted by the curse, spreading it even further for another entry.

Finn is currently attached to develop a new take on the 1981 horror classic Possession, and while that project doesn’t have a release date, it would seem likely that he would move forward on that before a new Smile. The success of both films, however, could mean that, rather than Finn helming a follow-up movie, another filmmaker could step in for Smile 3, or that another story could be told in that world that wasn’t a direct continuation of Smile 2.

Stay tuned for updates on the future of the Smile franchise. Smile 2 is in theaters now.

If you’re an anime fan of a certain generation, then you’re likely very acquainted with shows featuring maids. There was a period of time in the early 2000s where maids were a big trend, so you’d see multiple shows with maids in some form. The biggest stand outs in this regard were also very wish fulfillment heavy as a maid suddenly enters the protagonist’s life and begins changing it in incredible ways. But like many anime trends, maids eventually fell out of style. While there are still notable maid releases such as the most recent big entry, Akiba Maid War in 2022, it’s far from their heyday.

But also like most trends and styles, maids are coming back to the spotlight. Trends often repeat themselves in a cycle every decade or so, and the 2020s have begun to really tap into the 2000s for their nostalgia. It’s led to shows getting revived with new episodes, new reboots of classic hits and more, and now we’ve finally gotten a brand new show that capitalizes on that nostalgia while still offering something new. If you want a new maid anime that feels like you’re watching a classic show, then You Are Ms. Servant is going to be perfect for you.

Gainax / Shaft

2000s Anime Were Just Built Different

Before even digging into You Are Ms. Servant, we have to talk a little about being an anime fan in the 2000s. It was kind of the wild west really as the Internet was just really blowing up, and that meant that there was a greater ease of access to more shows. While anime is in a boom right now (with some reports even claiming that there will soon be one billion anime fans worldwide), it seemed even bigger back then. There might have been fewer options to enjoy, but there was a spirit of experimentation that allowed for all kinds of original anime releases.

This period wasn’t dominated by light novel adaptations, or all seemed to stem off the same kind of core genre, but instead there were just a ton of wild releases that you might be a fan of that no one else heard of. It was both an isolated, yet connected time where you’d basically just watch anything you could get your hands on. That means watching a lot of these maid shows, and now those shows have a spirit that has been carried on by You Are Ms. Servant in that crossroads between wish fulfillment, great action, and fluid animation production.

Felix Film

What Is You Are Ms. Servant?

Originally created by Shotan, You Are Ms. Servant first made its debut in the pages of Shogakukan’s Sunday Webry in 2020. The series stars Hitoyoshi Yokoya, a boy who’s currently living on his own until one day a maid suddenly appears at his door. Claiming she’s been sent by a (very) distant relative, this mysterious maid reveals that she actually is an assassin and has been working as one until very recently. Although he doesn’t need one, Hitoyoshi reluctantly decides to hire her as a live-in maid despite the fact that she doesn’t really have any real household skills.

The premise along should feel familiar to many fans as it’s set up exactly like some of the most classic maid anime releases. It’s a maid with a secret skill, and it’s a young boy living alone who’s about to have his life changed with this sudden new introduction. As seen through the first four episodes of the new anime series this Fall, this new maid named Yuki (as Hitoyoshi named her due to the fact that she didn’t really have a name of her own during her assassin life) has already warmed her way into fans’ and Hitoyoshi’s heart.

Felix Film

Why You Should Watch You Are Ms. Servant

You Are Ms. Servant is serving a particular need. In the 2000s (and still to this day to be honest), a big part of anime was wish fulfillment. There was a lackluster main character that fans could superimpose themselves onto and imagine the kind of life they could lead with these wacky characters. It’s the idea that you wouldn’t be lonely, and that you’d suddenly have your life dramatically changed when someone special comes into your life for the first time.

It was an idea built for the young adult audience in mind, and with the maid trend of the time it resulted in these kids of shows. It ranged from the rather raunchy with the likes of He Is My Master, the more action focused like Mahoromatic, and eventually went on to the point of parody with the likes of Kamen no Maid Guy at the tail end of the trend. But You Are Ms. Servant seems to be a more elevated take on the idea. Honing in on the more grounded, sweet qualities of the idea as Yuki and Hitoyoshi form a makeshift family.

It’s just hard to describe, but You Are Ms. Servant just perfectly taps into that vibe. There’s even a hint that it’s going to be even more 2000s as it continues as a new assassin has made themselves known with the latest episode, and now it’s the perfect time to watch. If you wanted to check out the new anime as it airs this Fall, you can check out the latest episodes as they’re available to stream exclusively with Crunchyroll.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero publisher issued a warning to players today that indicates bans are very likely on the horizon for some who play online. As we’ve seen from social posts and showcases since Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero launched, some Dragon Ball fans are injecting a little extra flair into their games by using mods that change the appearances of fighters to “add” even more characters than the 182 that are already in the game. That may be all well and good for offline play, but for those using these mods in custom matches, you run the risk of getting banned for utilizing them.

The warning from Bandai Namco seems to deal exclusively with Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero‘s custom battles. This is the feature where players can come up with their own Dragon Ball fights complete with characters, stages, and other scenario factors that you picked out yourself. These custom battles can then be saved, and others can download them using a unique code so that they can play through them themselves.

The problem with those matches is that players can presumably use mods when creating one to change the appearances of characters among anything else that a mod would be capable of (which is pretty much everything). Even if you download a custom battle that uses a mod, if you don’t have the mod in question, it’s almost certainly not going to work for you anyway which defeats the purpose of using them in custom matches. For content moderation purposes, the thumbnails for custom battles also make use of whatever content is included in them, so even if the mods don’t work for others, they’d still be able to see some thumbnails that are potentially unsuitable for online play.

To that end, Bandai Namco has issued a mandate: stop using mods in custom matches or you could be banned.

Dabura in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.

“Concerning Custom Battle MODs in DRAGON BALL: Sparking! Zero,” the message shared on Twitter said. “Appropriate security measures will be taken against those who used any MOD system in Custom Battle. We recommend you delete any custom battles containing MODs immediately to avoid a ban. Please note that our support team cannot address any issues or appeals caused by the use of MODs. We appreciate your understanding and continued support for the game.”

It’s unclear how long a ban might last if you get hit with one for using mods in online play, but it sure sounds like Bandai Namco won’t be taking any measures to unban you since a warning has already been issued. For those who’ve been using mods in custom battles and have uploaded them already, now would probably be the best time to get rid of them. And if you see a custom battle online that looks like it’s been modded, it’s probably best to avoid it since it likely won’t work properly and will probably be gone soon anyway.

Aside from using mods to augment custom battles, players have also found a way to “mod” their way into a custom battle scenario which was technically baked into Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero already. It would seem that there’s a way to play as Gohan Black in the Dragon Ball game through inputting a specific code players discovered without any mods needed, but Gohan Black isn’t technically a pickable character from the game’s roster despite being in the alternate scenarios. That’s led people to believe that Gohan Black may be added later as a standalone fighter, but all we know about so far is the DLC that’s been laid out previously.

Atlus has released another new update today for its hit RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio. Since releasing earlier in October, there have only been a few subsequent patches for Metaphor across PS5, Xbox, and PC. Most of these updates have been pretty small in nature and have only fixed a couple of one-off bugs that players have found in the game. Now, this trend has continued, and the latest patch might very well be the biggest one so far.

Downloadable right now, this new Metaphor: ReFantazio update doesn’t do a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. Even though it’s likely the biggest post-release patch yet, it’s still a pretty tiny one that only incorporates a few new fixes. Some of these resolutions are related to a bug that was appearing in the Catacombs, one tied to progression being blocked, and another that changed a previous animation. The biggest change, though, is the ability to turn off motion blur when dashing, which can now be toggled in the settings menu.

The main thing to note with this Metaphor: ReFantazio update for the moment is that it’s only live on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms. Atlus said that the said patch will be coming to PC at some point in the future, but has yet to provide a specific release date. In all likelihood, it should drop before this week has come to a close given the cadence Atlus has with previous patch releases. If that update ends up being at all different in any major ways from this one, then we’ll be sure to let you know.

Until then, you can find the full patch notes for today’s new Metaphor: ReFantazio update attached below.

Metaphor: ReFantazio Update 1.09 Patch Notes

  • New ON/OFF toggle setting for motion blur animation when dashing.
    • Dash effects setting can be changed from SETTINGS > Dash Effects.
  • Fixed an issue where a quest in the Catacombs cannot be completed under certain conditions.
  • Fixed an issue where progression is blocked when enemies with status ailments conduct certain actions.
  • Expedited the animation when displaying the popularity ranking.
  • Fixed other minor bugs.

Bleach’s creator was recently asked about his favorite fight scene in Jujutsu Kaisen, and he’s a big fan of one of the deadliest one sided fights in the entire series! Bleach and Jujutsu Kaisen have quite a lot to celebrate because while both series have ended their respective runs with Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, both franchises are experiencing a major high among fans. Tite Kubo’s Bleach is taking over screens with the latest batch of episodes in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War this Fall, and Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen is now in the works on coming back with Season 3 of the TV anime in the future.

Kubo and Akutami were recently recruited by Shueisha as judges for the special Jump Next Generation Battle Manga Award alongside My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi and Black Clover creator Yuki Tabata. They are looking through tons of submissions from fans in Japan to award a series that they think represents the next generation of battle series for Jump magazine. As part of this gathering, the creators were asked about their favorite fights from each others’ series, and Bleach creator Tite Kubo revealed that he was a huge fan on Maki’s one vs. all fight against the Zenin clan in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Shueisha

Bleach Creator’s Favorite Jujutsu Kaisen Fight

Kubo’s favorite fight in Jujutsu Kaisen might be a bit spoilery for fans who are only caught up with the anime as it takes place right before the events of the Culling Game arc. After the Shibuya Incident Maki is unrecognizably injured, and decides to eliminate the rest of her family in order to tap into the true extent of her strength. In Chapters 148 through 150 of the manga, Maki decides to basically go on a path of vengeance and starts tearing through the other members of her clan.

Kubo praises the scene as such, “While making every effort to avoid explanations of complex magic formulas, which is generally considered to be a feature of jujutsu battles, the story follows Akutami’s signature flashbacks that alternate between fact and fiction, followed by a succession of magic formulas that are easy to understand and look good on screen, a series of battles full of gore and scenes that make you envious of the loosening of the jumps, and mountains of corpses. The flow leading up to the fight with Naoya is exhilarating and perfect. This is what it means to be in the flow of a writer’s strokes.”

Shueisha

Why This Jujutsu Kaisen Fight Is Important

It’s no surprise that this is a major fight that stood out to Bleach’s creator as it’s one of Jujutsu Kaisen‘s most brutal. As Kubo rightly points out, it’s not a fight that’s primarily concerned with Jujutsu techniques as Maki cleanly cuts through everything in her path. It’s not like many of the other scenes in the Shibuya Incident or Culling Game as Maki has no cursed techniques of her own. Instead, her raw strength and bloodlust eventually lead her to a full massacre of the rest of her family.

It’s a huge pivot for Maki as a character as she becomes a modern age version of Toji Fushiguro, who also fought in very much the same way. The strength of their bodies, and speed of their strikes allowed them to get the upper hand on many curse users. It’s what brings Maki to the level necessary to put up a real fight later as Yuji and the others eventually challenge Sukuna, and it’s still one of the biggest moments in the series. When it gets animated in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, fans are going to be in for a wildly brutal time.

Power Rangers fans were delighted when Digital Eclipse revealed Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, and now we have a new trailer and a long awaited release date for the hotly anticipated 90s style arcade brawler. Rita’s Rewind is looking fantastic in the new footage, and now we know that it will be launching on consoles, Switch, and Steam on December 10th. Players can choose from the original five Rangers from the outset, and the Green Ranger is in the mix as well, but the trailer and a new PlayStation Blog post makes it clear that you won’t just be brawling during your time in the game.

Digital Eclipse says that about 70% of the game will feature that classic beat ’em up action, with players utilizing melee attacks and combos to make their way through waves of Putty Patrollers and Rita Repulsa’s other minions. The other 30% though will shake things up and take inspiration from some SEGA classics, including Space Harrier and Out Run.

These sequences speed up the action even more and capture the full experience of being a Power Ranger, but they also switch things up for longtime franchise fans. For example, an early sequence will have traveling through Angel Grove and learning what’s happening to the timestream thanks to Rita’s shenanigans. You’ll be battling a familiar foe in Goldar, but you’ll also encounter enemies that shouldn’t be appearing at this point in Power Rangers history.

Gameplay Switch-Up

After you face Goldar, Rita will then throw down her staff and turn Golder supersized, and as fans of the show know, this is where the Zords come in. This will happen in the game as well, as things will shift perspectives and take on full super-scaler style when the Rangers jump into their Dinozords to follow in pursuit. You’ll blast away obstacles and enemies with your Zord’s weapons as you try and catch up, drawing upon games like Galaxy Force and After Burner.

When you finally do catch up, the gameplay will switch for a third time, but this time around you’ll adopt a first person view from your Megazord as you battle the towering Goldar. Each player will get a chance to wear the boss down and contribute to the overall end goal of defeating him, and throughout the course of the game players will bounce between all three gameplay modes in a time travel adventure like no other.

In the post, Digital Eclipse Content Editor Dan Amrich revealed that their goal with Rita’s Rewind was to make a game that could have and should have existed back in the day while also taking advantage of all the knowledge players have now regarding arcade gaming.

“In fact, one of the concepts that drives a lot of what we do at Digital Eclipse is the desire to make games the way you remember them playing, even if your memories have made those experiences a little sweeter and cooler than they might have actually been back in the day. Our goal with Rita’s Rewind is to make a game that could have existed, and certainly should have existed, but probably wouldn’t have existed with all this variety in one place. Since we have the benefit of looking at arcade gaming in the rearview mirror for 30 years, we’ll take advantage of that to try to deliver something better than you would have remembered,” Amrich wrote.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind releases on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, Steam, and Nintendo Switch on December 10th.

When Netflix announced that Arcane would finally be coming back with Season 2 in early November, it surprised fans by also confirming that this would be the end of the series. Since the arrival of Season 1 of Arcane in late 2021, the League of Legends animated series has gone on to be one of the most successful that Netflix has ever seen. Naturally, many viewers assumed that this would lead to Arcane sticking around for many years to come with multiple seasons to follow. Instead, those in charge of the show have decided to go in a different direction, although this outcome was always part of the plan.

In an interview with ComicBook prior to Season 2 of Arcane releasing, series co-creator Christian Linke expanded on the thought process behind ending the show at this point. Linke said that when Arcane was first conceptualized, those in charge of the series always had a throughline story in place for its main characters. That being said, it didn’t know how long it would take to tell this story and no specific episode counts were established. As work on Season 2 continued, though, it became clear that this would be the final outing for the show.

“We always had a story in mind with a beginning and an end. I think it was really just the character arcs. We knew that there was a specific thing we wanted to do,” Linke said. “We didn’t necessarily have a specific episode count in mind, but we always knew it would be a finite story. It wasn’t this open-ended concept for a series. It was pretty organic for us so there was never this question of, ‘Oh, when will it end? We don’t know.’ We knew from the start.”

arcane-season-2.jpg

Even though Linke and the other creators of Arcane always had the broad strokes of the series nailed down, that doesn’t mean that it was ever easy to develop. In fact, Linke said that one of the biggest challenges of Season 2 has been bringing about an end to the show’s vast cast of characters and their respective arcs. While some characters are more central to the plot of Arcane than others, Linke said it was important for some of the less notable side characters to have their own stories wrapped up in a satisfying way.

“I don’t know how many TV shows you’ve watched where 10 or 11 characters all get a satisfying full arc paid off and resolved. I don’t think I have,” he continued. “It’s daunting. It was just part of what we built. We wanted this kind of ensemble story. […] That’s the thing about a video game adaptation. There’s always going to be someone, no matter if you banish one character into this side-character land, there are going to be millions of people who will be like, ‘What the f**k? What about my character? Why aren’t they getting their proper arc?’ It was just a responsibility that was always there. We can’t run away from that. We have to give everyone a proper story.”

Arcane is set to return next week on November 9th with its first three episodes of Season 2 premiering at once. The following week on November 16th will see episodes four, five, and six arriving, before the final three episodes will then roll out on November 23rd. Be sure to stay tuned to ComicBook as we’ll have a lot more to share with you tied to Arcane in the weeks ahead.

Comic Book movies and TV shows are still going strong right now, with Sony-Marvel’s Venom: The Last Dance opening in theaters, while DC’s Batman spinoff The Penguin is earning major acclaim on HBO. Most superhero fans would agree that Venom 3 and The Penguin couldn’t be more different in terms of tone and subject matter; however, they do share something in common: breakout performances by lead actors (Tom Hardy and Colin Farrell, respectively), which are the heart of both franchises.

There’s also a dark weird connection between Venom: The Last Dance and The Penguin – specifically Episode 6, which aired during Venom 3‘s opening weekend:

Did You Spot The Same Actor In Venom 3 & The Penguin?

Actor Jared Abrahamson had quite a week for an aspiring actor: he played a bit role in Venom: The Last Dance as Captain Forrest, a member of Imperium; he also had a recurring role in The Penguin as “Squid,” a local shot-caller and drug dealer operating in the slums neighborhood of Crown Point.

Abrahamson was much more of a background character as Cpt. Forrest in Venom 3: he appeared in scenes as a right-hand-man to Imperium military commander General Rex Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor); however, in the film’s third act, the symbiote god Knull sends his Xenophage monsters to attack Imperium’s base at Area 51 resulting in the death or retreat of nearly ever Imperium team member. Forrest’s fate is unknown after the film (though is wiki lists him as “alive”).

Jared Abrahamson as Squid in DC’s “The Penguin”

The Penguin gave Jared Abrahamson a much bigger spotlight in Episode 6: his story arc with Penguin’s sidekick Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz) came to a head when Squid finally leaned on Victor to set him up with an introduction to Penguin. When Squid goes so far as to threaten Victor with snitching to the cops or rival gangs, Victor takes the drastic step of shooting him in the neck. Abrahamson got a bloody death scene as he bleeds out in an alley – but it’s a performance that will definitely spice up his highlight reel! Not to mention the rush that Abrahamson is probably enjoying right now, having two high-profile projects out simultaneously.

Jared Abrahamson has previously appeared in the indie comedy On the Count of Three (starring Jarrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott); episode arcs in the Hulu series Letterkenny and Ramy, and Apple TV+’s The Changeling. He is probably best known for starring in Netflix’s time-travel sci-f-drama-mystery series Travelers (2016-2018).

You can also catch him in Venom: The Last Dance (now in theaters) or in The Penguin (airing on HBO and streaming on Max).

Wizarding World: Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts

It seems Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has been struck with the killing curse. Actor Eddie Redmayne, who played magizoologist Newt Scamander in the J.K. Rowling-penned trilogy, told ComicBook this week that moviegoers “probably have” seen the last of his character on the big screen after Warner Bros. Discovery rebranded the Wizarding World franchise to simply Harry Potter. And now Jude Law, who portrayed the younger Dumbledore in two of the three Fantastic Beasts installments, suggests Warner Bros. has abandoned plans for the fourth and fifth Fantastic Beasts movies.

“I know it’s certainly on hold,” Law told Variety. “My guess would be that, now that they’re doing Harry Potter as a TV show, they’ll probably put their energy into that. I certainly haven’t heard that there’s anything on the horizon.”

Even before the first Fantastic Beasts released in 2016, author and series creator Rowling announced a five-movie plan for the spinoffs set nearly a century before the events of the Harry Potter films. Fantastic Beasts, based on the fictional textbook within the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, went on to gross $814 million at the global box office, while 2018’s The Crimes of Grindelwald dropped to $654 million. 2021’s The Secrets of Dumbledore is the lowest-grossing Wizarding World movie at $407 million worldwide.

“I think they probably have [seen the last of Newt],” Redmayne told ComicBook. “That was a very frank answer, but yeah. And that’s as far as I know. I mean, you’d have to speak to the people at Warner Bros. and J.K Rowling, but as far as I know, that’s it.”

In 2020, Redmayne issued a statement saying he disagreed with Rowling’s anti-trans tweets, joining Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Evanna Lynch, and Bonnie Wright in speaking out against the author’s comments. Rowling scripted the first two Fantastic Beasts and co-wrote the third with Harry Potter veteran scribe Steve Kloves.

The HBO Harry Potter TV show is the first live-action project to be greenlit since Secrets of Dumbledore. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has described the Harry Potter franchise as a priority for the company after the eight-movie saga grossed nearly $8 billion between 2001 and 2011.

The television series is described as a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s seven books, with the author serving as executive producer via her Brontë Film. HBO, in association with Warner Bros. Television, is currently casting actors for the series from showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner (HBO’s Succession) and executive producer and director Mark Mylod (Game of Thrones and The Last of Us).

“The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have loved for over twenty-five years,” according to Warner Bros. Discovery. “Each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

Law will next appear as Force user Jod Na Nawood in the new series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which premieres Dec. 3 on Disney+.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket is now available on iOS and Android devices, giving players a whole new way to collect Pokemon cards. The game is free to play, with players being able to open two in-game card packs every day. However, the game also has some microtransactions that can be made which allow players to obtain cards more quickly. Notably, the game has a Premium Pass, which features some extra benefits in exchange for a monthly fee. Players might be wondering if the pass is worth the extra investment, and it largely depends on how much you plan on putting into the experience.

From the start, players that buy the Premium Pass will be able to open one additional pack of Pokemon Cards each day, for a total of three. Each pack comes with five cards, so you’re looking at a total of fifteen cards per day for Premium Pass subscribers, as opposed to the usual ten (note that some can have doubles, just like real-life card packs). Those extra cards can quickly add up, and there are other benefits as well. This includes premium missions, which will allow players to obtain promo cards and other in-game items, like the coins used in battles with other players and AI opponents. The current items shown as premium mission rewards can also be found in the shop, so players can use the Poke Gold currency instead, if they prefer.

As with any subscription service, the Premium Pass for Pokemon TCG Pocket is only worth it for players that are going to stick to using it. The additional packs don’t carry over, so if players miss their 24 hour window on opening a third pack, they don’t get to open four at the start of the following day. Thankfully, Pokemon TCG Pocket offers Premium Pass subscribers a no-cost trial for two weeks. No cost is incurred as long as the player cancels their subscription “at least 24 hours before the end of the no-cost trial.” That window should be a good amount of time to decide whether the service is right for you, and whether you plan on sticking with the game long enough to get your money’s worth. Plus, if you do it every day during the trial and don’t stick around, you’ll still end up with a bunch of extra cards!

RELATED: Pokemon TCG Pocket vs. Pokemon TCG Live: What’s the Difference?

It appears that the no-cost trial is open to all “first-time subscribers.” Basically, if you try out the Premium Pass and decide to cancel ahead of the charge date, you probably won’t get a second chance to try the service. It’s possible The Pokemon Company could offer the trial again as part of some kind of promotion. However, the developers are going to want to avoid people signing up for these trials repeatedly to get free cards and then quitting before they get charged.

An unfortunate reality of the video game industry is that a lot of games only ever get one release. If you miss out on a game when it first comes out, you often won’t get a second chance to play it. For that reason, we’ve seen a lot of remakes and remasters pop up in recent years, but there are lots of great games in desperate need of this treatment, including several in the horror genre. Shockingly enough, many of these games are owned by major publishers, making their lack of wider availability all the more puzzling. To give these companies a push in the right direction, ComicBook has assembled five horror games in desperate need of a second chance on modern platforms.

5. The House of the Dead: OverkillSome of the older House of the Dead games have been getting remasters recently, but the one most deserving of this treatment is The House of the Dead: Overkill. Released on Wii in 2009, the rail shooter leaned into the franchise’s cheesy acting and stories with a style inspired by grindhouse cinema. The new direction was a perfect fit for the series, with language and gore that felt fittingly over-the-top. The overall absurdity added to the game’s charm, resulting in one of the funniest and most enjoyable games in the series. While Overkill was later ported to PS3, the game is unfortunately unavailable on modern platforms; Sega desperately needs to rectify that.

4. Resident Evil – Code: Veronica– Over the last few years, Capcom has remade several classic Resident Evil games. Favorites like Resident Evil 2 have gotten a huge glow up as a result, with gorgeous visuals and improved gameplay. Unfortunately, the publisher has exclusively focused on the numbered entries in the series, leaving Resident Evil – Code: Veronica fans out of luck. Originally released on Dreamcast in 2000, the game offered a compelling story centered around Claire Redfield. Unlike many of the games on this list, the original version of Code: Veronica is thankfully available on modern platforms, so even if it never gets the remake treatment, at least series newcomers can see what all the fuss is about.

3. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem– One of the most unique video games ever published by Nintendo, Eternal Darkness was released on Nintendo GameCube back in 2002. The game was a commercial flop, but it has built a passionate following in recent years. This unique game took players on a journey spanning human history, in which the games protagonists were tasked with stopping a Lovecraftian menace from conquering the world. As the heroes encountered increasingly dark and frightening things, a meter would build, and the game would produce “Sanity Effects” that would actually mess with the player. These Sanity Effects made it look like the volume on the TV was being lowered, or that the memory card was being deleted.

Sadly, Nintendo has never made a sequel, and the original game has never been made available on another platform. Given the large user base Switch has, there’s never been a better time to bring this game back.

2. Dino Crisis– In 1999, Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami delivered Dino Crisis on the original PlayStation. The elevator pitch is simple: Resident Evil meets Jurassic Park. With faster, more intimidating enemies than the Resident Evil games had provided, Dino Crisis seems like the kind of series that should have about 10 sequels right now. Unfortunately, the franchise has been dormant since 2003. Fans have spent years begging for a Resident Evil style remake, and Dino Crisis even topped a worldwide poll asking which Capcom series is in need of a new entry. Modern consoles could make the game’s enemies far scarier than they were back in the day, and it’s exciting to think how great a remake of the first game could look on PS5 or Xbox Series X. It remains to be seen whether that will ever happen, but those who would like to play the first game can now find it on PlayStation Plus.

1. Parasite Eve– In the original PlayStation era, Square’s offerings largely centered on turn-based RPGs. 1998’s Parasite Eve was a rare exception; while the game did feature RPG elements, it also added survival horror in the mix. The game centers on police officer Aya Brea, one of the few survivors of a horrific event at an opera where the audience spontaneously combusts. Aya begins to investigate, in an adventure that takes place in New York City around Christmas. The game’s theme and setting would make it a perfect candidate for a remake on current platforms. With Square Enix in the process of remaking games like Dragon Quest III and Final Fantasy VII, Parasite Eve should be next classic to get that treatment.

For years, Dragon Ball has commanded the attention of fans globally, and that grip is only getting tighter. Son Goku is one of the most famous characters on television, after all. From movie to TV, Dragon Ball knows what it takes to win, and it is proving as much with Dragon Ball Daima. The new anime is just a few episodes in, and despite its few critics, the show is eating up streaming ratings.

If you did not realize, Dragon Ball Daima came to life at the start of October, and it marks the anime’s first foray since 2018. The show began strong with an extended premiere, and Toei Animation cleaned the plate with its animation. From is lore drops to its solid visuals, Dragon Ball Daima is thriving, and Netflix has confirmed this truth with a new ratings update.

Dragon Ball Daima Is a Big Hit

You can head over to Netflix’s Top 10 to see this much for yourself. If you look at the service’s global numbers, Dragon Ball Daima ranked in second place for non-English TV shows. The anime made this push between October 21st and October 27th despite competition from other top-notch anime titles.

For instance, Dandadan came in third place during this time frame with 3.1 million views. Ranma 1/2 also popped up on the list with a sixth-place ranking. The main competition facing these anime titles comes with South Korean drams. But so far as anime is concerned, Dragon Ball Daima is doing well at Netflix just two episodes in.

This data is only paired with Dragon Ball Daima‘s success elsewhere online. According to Google, the anime has ranked as one of the top ten most-searched anime series since its release. It is competing against shows like Dragon Ball Z hilariously enough, and other hits like Blue Lock and My Hero Academia are included. In Japan, the popular news site Mynavi has ranked Dragon Ball Daima as the top anime to watch in Fall 2024. So if you ever doubted Goku, well – think again.

Oh, and that doesn’t even touch the success Dragon Ball Daima has on Max. The streaming service oversees the anime’s release in South America as well in select European markets. Dragon Ball Daima has not left the service’s Top 10 list since its debut. Markets like Belize, Mexico, and Haiti have leaned into the anime especially. There is no shortage of love for Son Goku, and that is true no matter where you go.

Dragon Ball Daima Is the Perfect Anime for Beginners

If you have not checked out Dragon Ball Daima, we can tell you the anime is the perfect place to start your journey with Goku. The show is set after the events of Dragon Ball Z, but it almost gives our heroes a blank slate. We meet Goku and his friends after they defeated Majin Buu, and their lives are thrown into chaos when the Demon Realm makes a move.

Dragon Ball Daima follows Goku as he is transformed into a mini version of himself, and we have some demons to blame. The hero is tasked with traversing the Demon Realm to figure out what changed his group into minis. And along the way, we have been given a massive update on lore and history that will give beginners a good idea of where Dragon Ball stands.

Right now, Dragon Ball Daima is streaming on Crunchyroll, and it has a delayed cast over on Netflix. The anime has an English dub in the works as well, but don’t go looking for it just yet! The dub of Dragon Ball Daima will premiere in U.S. theaters this November before it makes its way to streaming.

Have you checked out Dragon Ball Daima yet? Give me a shout at @meganwpeters with your take! You can also let us know what you think over on X (Twitter) and Instagram.

Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion has long worn her love of all things anime on her sleeve. Recently, the worldwide sensation helped to host the latest Crunchyroll Awards, the ceremony that honored some of the biggest franchises in the anime world. While she was doing so, Megan would switch between cosplays of some major characters in the anime world. For this year’s Halloween, Thee Stallion has shared a new costume that has her hitching a ride on the Golden Wind. This spooky season just got a little more spicy as Megan takes on the role of Trish Una via her social media account

For those who might not know the character that is Trish Una, she played a significant role in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. While she didn’t originally join up with Giorno and his friends who were looking to overtake the Passione mafia, she was on a crash course with the Stand-wielding stars. Trish just so happened to be the daughter of Diavolo, the nefarious head of Passione who was gunning for his offspring to make sure that no one discovered his alter-ego. Luckily for Trish, she was discovered by Giorno just in time as her father looked to strike her from this Earth.

Megan Thee Joestar

Megan Thee Stallion might be one of the biggest JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure fans, routinely not only paying tribute to Hirohiko Araki’s anime online but also routinely making visits to Japan to see some Joestar sights. In recent years, she has visited JoJo exhibits and as previously mentioned, took on the look of Bruno Bucciarati at the Crunchyroll Awards to show off her admiration for all things Joestar. It should come as no surprise that she was more than willing to take on the look of Trish and her Stand, “Spice Girl” (or Spicy Lady for North American fans).

What Happened to Trish?

Trish was luckily able to ultimately survive the fight against her father, as Giorno was able to defeat Diavolo and take over the Italian mob. When the Golden Wind ended, Giovanna stood at the top of the ladder but it is the last that we saw of the Golden Wind characters so far. While JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has featured Joestars returning for certain segments of the future arcs, Trish has remained absent from the likes of Steel Ball Run, JoJolion, and the JOJOLands.

In terms of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s anime future, Trish probably won’t make an appearance in a potential new season that would take anime viewers into the Steel Ball Run. While neither Netflix nor David Production has confirmed that another season is in the works following the Stone Ocean’s conclusion, rumors are still swirling that the story of Johnny Joestar might be on the way.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Anime Recommendations

On top of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Megan Thee Stallion has shared quite a few recommendations in the anime world. Some of the singer’s biggest recommendations have been the likes of Hunter x Hunter, My Hero Academia, Soul Eater, and many others. In fact, one of the biggest cosplay examples from Megan’s past includes Shoto Todoroki of My Hero Academia fame, as the musician was more than willing to take on the appearance of the Hot and Cold hero. As anime continues to grow in popularity, expect Megan to continue to discover new anime to share with her fans.

Want to see what the future holds for both the Joestars and Megan Thee Stallion’s Bizarre Anime Adventure? Follow along with Team Anime on ComicBook.com for the latest updates on JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and hit me up directly @EVComedy to talk all things comics and anime.

McFarlane Toys Swamp Thing from the Planet Rann Megafig

Agh! The Swamp Thing….from Planet Rann! McFarlane Toys announced today that a new Swamp Thing Mega Figure would release on Halloween, and this time it would be the humongous, red, cactus-like creature from the Planet Rann! Swamp Thing #57 (February 1987) introduces the terrifying monster when hero Adam Strange attempts to return to Planet Rann and instead smashes head on into the Swamp Thing! Now mutated to be red and cacti-like, it’s up to Adam to take him down.

The McFarlane Mega figure line is usually taller than the regular line, some coming in at 9-inches. We’ll have to wait and see what the exact measurements are, but this Swamp Thing is destined to be one of the larger McFarlane collectibles. Pre-orders for the figure are expected to go live starting at 9am PT / 12pm ET tomorrow, October 31st.. You can find it at Entertainment Earth here after the launch time. It should also be available on Amazon. Direct links be added when the figure goes live.

McFarlane also recently launched the DC Direct Collector Vinyl Swamp Thing Todd’s Mods Limited Edition Figure, a 4 1/2-inch collectible with a static pose., It’s available for $14.99 with an estimated arrival date of January 2025. You can pre-order the figure here at Entertainment Earth as well

Swamp Thing continues to grow with new stories and new team ups in the DC Universe, in the comics and on camera. While we wait to hear what’s going on with James Mangold’s Swamp Thing movie, we’ll be looking at the comics to see what he’s up to. Just today DC released a special Halloween one-shot, a collaboration between two plant-lovers… Swamp Thing and Poison Ivy! The new comic, Poison Ivy/Swamp Thing: Feral Trees #1, gets into how its two characters protect the green and what their role is in the Parliament of Trees.

Comicbook’s own Matthew Aguilar reviewed the comic and gave it a 4.5, stating it “keeps you hooked on the greater mystery and emotionally invested in the people in the center of it all the way through, and it’s an adventure you won’t want to miss.” So, there you have it. This is definitely a team-up I need to read.

Stay up to date with all Swamp Thing collectibles and DC drops here at our Gear page!

Artist Rob Reger’s beloved creation Emily the Strange is getting adapted into an animated movie by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Bad Robot. The Emily the Strange feature film will be written by Moana writer Pamela Ribon, with Reger and his company Cosmic Debris producing with Bad Robot. Trevor Duke-Moretz is also credited as an executive producer. Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation made a joint announcement on social media about the Emily the Strange movie, with Rob Reger giving comments to Deadline on the project.

Rob Reger told the outlet that “both the creative and executive teams we have in place for the movie are incredible. Everyone shows up with a keen perspective along with an understanding and respect for the unique connection Emily the Strange has with our ‘real world.’”

He also acknowledged that “Emily celebrates all that is weird and different, which in turn makes the strange and unusual in all of us, feel a little less alone. Bringing to life Emily’s universe and many mythologies we have created over the years is truly one of Emily’s best nightmares come true.”

“Emily is an enduring pop-culture icon of individuality and empowerment, and Pamela Ribon has a singular and iconic voice. What an honor it is for us as Warner Bros. Pictures Animation to partner with Bad Robot, Rob [Reger] and Trevor [Duke-Moretz] in bringing Emily the Strange to the big screen,” Bill Damaschke, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, said.

John Agbaje, SVP of Animation, Bad Robot, added, “At Bad Robot, we are looking to push the boundaries of what’s possible in animation. Emily, a character who refuses to be defined by others, is the perfect opportunity to do just that. We’re thrilled to add her world to our feature animation slate. The team assembled has so much passion for Emily the Strange, what she’s represented so far, and what she will mean to future generations.”

Emily the Strange debuted in the early 1990s across various clothing lines, stickers, and other merchandise. She would later cross over into other forms of media like comic books, video games, and graphic novels. Emily the Strange comics were published by Dark Horse, with the novellas falling under Chronicle Books and HarperCollins. Emily possesses the spunky attitude that a young woman of the world needs to navigate a world that often overlooks or underestimates girls.

Warner Bros. released an animated short announcing Emily the Strange. With Warner Bros. being the home of the Beetlejuice franchise, they may be the perfect studio to bring Emily and her strange world to live.

Happy new comic book day! It’s another major week in comics, and the ComicBook staff have come together to break down and review as many of the big comics releasing this week as possible. Now obviously this isn’t every single comic on stands, but we’re breaking down new releases from Marvel, DC, Image Comics, BOOM! Studios, Dark Horse, Dynamite, Oni Press, IDW, Mad Cave Studios, DSTLRY, and more!

We’ve also carved out some additional space for three of this week’s biggest books, including The Amazing Spider-Man #60, It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour #1, and Poison Ivy/Swamp Thing: Feral Trees #1, so if our smaller review here piques your interest, make sure to check out the full review for a much more comprehensive analysis of all three issues. As for ratings, we keep things simple with a whole or half number out of five, and you can check out some of our previous reviews right here. With all that said, let’s get to this week’s new comics!

DC

Action Comics #1073
Other than the Superboy subplot that is wedged in the middle of things (and that, at this point, feels like it should have been a backup story rather than a subplot), Action Comics #1073 is outstanding. The issue sees Superman come face to face with Aethyr but then in a surprising twist finds himself in a much more dire situation when his attempt to find the way home goes sideways and lands him in an entirely different idea of home. What really works here is the centering of the story around the idea of what Jor-El really did in the creation of the Phantom Zone prison while still delivering on some high-stakes action. As for the Supergirl backup story, we get a little bit more about the mysterious prisoner, but the overall story still feels like a puzzle box that is moving towards solution at an almost too-slow pace. It’s interesting, but it just feels like there could be more. – Nicole Drum
Rating: 4 out of 5

Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween #2
Batman: The Long Halloween The Last Halloween #2 continues the slow burn of the story kicked off with the first issue, but keeps things moving by adding interesting elements, such as the arrival of the FBI — who has their own agenda — and by having Batman miss an important clue along the way. The tone of this issue is much more consistent than the first, particularly with Robin, and that also gives this issue a bit more gravity to it and makes it a bit more interesting, both to those unfamiliar with the original The Long Halloween and those who know it chapter and verse. The art fits the overall vibe very nicely as well.
– Nicole Drum
Rating: 4 out of 5

Poison Ivy/Swamp Thing: Feral Trees #1
DC has delivered the team-up I didn’t know I needed right in time for Halloween in a new one-shot special titled Poison Ivy/Swamp Thing: Feral Trees. As the title suggest, the issue brings Poison Ivy and Swamp Thing together in a haunting and emotionally complex adventure that conveys a clearer understanding of Swampy and Ivy’s roles in the protection of the green and how the Parliament of Trees fits into that equation and how they perceive outsiders. Poison Ivy/Swamp Thing: Feral Trees #1 keeps you hooked on the greater mystery and emotionally invested in the people in the center of it all the way through, and it’s an adventure you won’t want to miss.
– Matthew Aguilar (Read the full review here)
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

The Nice House By The Sea #4
James Tynion IV finds new layers as he continues to dig deeper not only into his characters but in the larger plot of Night House by the Sea as well. As things continue to open up and reveal the broader picture, questions still linger, making the entire thing all the more intriguing. Series art by co-creator Álvaro Martínez Bueno remains the high point of experiencing the series though as he not only captures specific moods and styles (this issue depicts security camera footage and actually making it terrifying). Jordie Bellaire’s color work also remains an MVP, elevating the already great images to new heights.
– Spencer Perry
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Marvel

Captain America #14
The most surprising thing about this Captain America run is that it’s somehow still going on. Issue #14 brings Thor and Spider-Man into the fold to try and give Steve some familiar faces to fight alongside. Their additions are more hurtful than helpful. Neither one of them are written particularly well, with Spider-Man feeling like the most frustrating of the two. This continues, month after month, to be one of the most baffling books in Marvel’s lineup.
– Charlie Ridgely
Rating: 1.5 out of 5

Namor #4
Namor is awesome. I tried to think of a more eloquent, intelligent way to phrase that, but that’s not necessary. “Namor is awesome” is exactly what needs to be said right now. This saga from Jason Aaron is already a gripping, complicated tale about a fallen king wrestling with his past in order to save the future of a people that hate him. Now we’re adding an entire army of sentient beings made of the seaweed and coral reef that have been relentlessly abused over the years? It just doesn’t get much better than this. An absolute bruiser of a book week after week. – Charlie Ridgely
Rating: 5 out of 5

NYX #4
NYX has been quietly putting together one of the more compelling corners of the X-Men universe, and it feels as if NYX #4 is the true boiling point that will shift the series into its next gear. Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly have successfully woven Ms. Marvel into the fabric of the X-Men saga in a natural and organic way, and her interactions with Prodigy and Sophie are major parts of why NYX #4 works so well. Kamala is the heart and soul of this book, but as we’ve learned with the character in the past, one of her most important powers is the ability to relate to others in a meaningful way and get through when most others can’t, paving the way for welcome turns and heartbreaking turns in equal measure. Artist Enid Balam and colorist Raul Angulo pull on the heartstrings throughout the issue in several key scenes, but they also deliver frenetic action sequences that take advantage of the cast’s dynamic power set. Also, Julian looks like an absolute powerhouse in several of these sequences, and that last page has my hyped for an anticipated and long awaited throwdown. NYX has carved out a unique identity within the X-Books and is really starting to hit its stride at the right time. – Matthew Aguilar
Rating: 4 out of 5

Phases of The Moon Knight #3
This has been a really great concept for an anthology story. The nature of Moon Knight makes for a story that can span numerous characters, time periods, and settings, and the series has done an excellent job of finding little corners where magic can come alive. Not every story is as good as the others, but they’ve all been enjoyable to some degree.
– Charlie Ridgely
Rating: 3 out of 5

Predator vs. Black Panther #3
Benjamin Percy has proven himself already to be well suited to writing these types of epic crossovers for Marvel. Percy weaves a tight narrative that not only respect the lore of Marvel’s hero and his home but also the larger Predator franchise, making them work together and mingle in a way that only works in comics. This issue features artwork by pencilers Chris Allen & Sean Damien Hill (with inks by Craig Yeung & Jonas Trindade and colors by Erick Arciniega) and that many cooks in the kitchen has resulted in some inconsistent art on the whole. Larger pages that deliver huge splashes and tell the story across unique fragmented images are the best, while the traditional pages often leave something to be desired. That said, Predator vs Black Panther continues to impress.
– Spencer Perry
Rating: 4 out of 5

Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #3
There’s a good idea at the core of Insurgency Rising, it’s just a shame the book itself can’t reach quite as high. It’s scattered, both in its writing and its art. There’s little consistency with these characters and none of it ever feels particularly new. This is unfortunately just another stab at trying to tell fresh stories in a period of Star Wars canon that has been exhaustively explored. – Charlie Ridgely
Rating: 2 out of 5

The Amazing Spider-Man #60
Zeb Wells’ Spider-Man run is one that has been met with some major controversy thanks to some of the wild swings that it took with its story. The writer introduced us to the now infamous “Paul”, gave Mary Jane superpowers, stepped up Tombstone’s game, introduced the most villainous Ben Reilly to date, and even sent Spidey spiraling into the underworld. For all the flaws that Wells’ run might have had, the creator goes a long way in his final issue to not only pay tribute to Peter Parker but give a worthwhile ending to nearly every plot point that he introduced over the years. – Evan Valentine (Read the full review here)
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Ultimate X-Men #8
Ultimate X-Men has some interesting elements and character beats that are a part of this new take on Marvel’s merry mutants but unfortunately, the series remains misplaced in terms of being the forefront of the Ultimate Universe in relation to the X-Men. Peach Momoko is able to give this series some really solid art but the story itself is one that just doesn’t resonate in the same way as its Ultimate counterparts. It feels…”off” in many regards in that it is a scattershot series that would work as an independent story but being the premiere Ultimate X-Men story hampers it. It just all feels extremely disconnected with its characters. This isn’t to say that it doesn’t have some noteworthy moments but they are not enough to right this ship’s trajectory. It’s really a shame but there are simply too many puzzle pieces that don’t fit here to truly make it stand toe-to-toe with the other Ultimates.
– Evan Valentine
Rating 2.5 out of 5

Wolverine: Revenge #3
One thing that I was expecting from Wolverine: Revenge, based on Hickman and Capullo’s first two issues, is plenty of blood and violence surrounding the Canucklehead. What I didn’t see coming was one of my favorite Logan and Deadpool interactions that I think I’ve ever read. In this alternate universe, Wade Wilson made a decision that means forgiveness might forever be out of his grasp, as Wolverine reminds him here. This story might not be “canon” but what the creative team is doing here might just give us one of the pinnacle Wolverine stories in Marvel history. There’s a lot to love in this tale of revenge and I’m beyond interested to see what takes place next when it comes to Logan’s journey, especially considering how this latest issue came to an end. – Evan Valentine
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Image Comics

Feral #7
The only thing that could make Feral more of a tension-filled affair has found its way into the series, and that comes in the form of three adorable little kittens. In Feral #7 the ice starts to subside and with it new dangers approach, and watching Elsie and Gigi try and navigate those unpredidtable dangers is as stressful as it is riveting. At this point I feel personally attacked by Tony Fleecs, Trish Forstner, Tone Rodriguez, and Brad Simpson for how long I find myself forgetting to breathe as the story twists and turns, and that still didn’t prepare me for one truly unexpected cliffhanger by issue’s end. Feral continues to be must read each and every single month, and now the long wait for Feral #8 begins.
– Matthew Aguilar
Rating: 5 out of 5

It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour #1
While we are still getting to know the overall world of Hyde Street in the main comic, It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour #1 makes for a strong and impressive introduction to the lure of the world. By speaking to something that is so relatable and unfortunately common for many by taking on the obsession with being thin, Devour #1 reminds readers just how easy it is to succumb to the lure of a quick fix with no thought to the consequences. The result is a horror that maybe isn’t full of jump scares or gore, but settles right into the thoughts and is deeply uncomfortable less for the world the story inhabits, but for the world the reader actually exists in. – Nicole Drum (Read the full review here)
Rating: 5 out of 5

Kaya #22
Kaya concludes its journey down the Dragon Road in stunning fashion. The issue begins with Kaya’s portentous dream but from the moment she awakes onward, it maintains a fast pace as she, Jin, and their mysterious new ally Razel try to escape from Atrian pursuers. As always, Wes Craig impresses with his unconventional character designs and creative layouts but Tom Nopalitano’s lettering stands out in this issue for ably conveying tones, timbre, and meaning with emphasis, shape, and color. This issue’s plot feels a bit thin and also light on character development — Kaya and Jin begin the issue divided over how much they should trust Razel and they don’t budge any from those positions — but makes up for it danger and adventure as it successfully ramps up the tension as it leads into a situation where Kaya and company are stuck between a robot army and a haunted city. After the previous, much weightier arc, “Kaya and the Dragon Road” proves lighter and much more visceral, making for a nice change of pace in this gripping journey.
– Jamie Lovett
Rating: 4 out of 5

Violent Flowers #2
Violent Flowers #2 spends most of the issue explaining things before sending Carnelia after Erzsebet at a strange, supernatural party that doesn’t exactly go as planned. It is certainly an interesting take on vampire stories with a strange, sexy edge, but the issue is hampered by both a lot and nothing really happening along with some somewhat cliche dialogue during the confrontation. A bit of a cliffhanger closes the issue and pushes the story forward, but it is otherwise a bit of a mixed bag. – Nicole Drum

Other Publishers

Anansi Boys #5
The screwball comedy of it all intensifies in Anansi Boys #5 as Spider takes Fat Charlie’s place at work for the date and his lunch date with Rosie. Meanwhile, Charlie wakes up to find an unfamiliar woman with him in bed and his would-be mother-in-law at his front door. Charlie’s confusion and exasperation are appropriately inverse to Spider’s natural charm as he fills in for his brother in some helpful ways and some less so. There’s a bit of an unexplained plot hole in that Rosie’s mother never really explains why she showed up at Charlie’s home if she thought he’d be at work anyway — Perhaps she planned to slide the paperwork about the upcoming wedding under his door, but then why knock at all? — but there are also some sly artistic touches, with Graham Coates drawn every bit as small in Spider’s presence as Charlie once did upon entering the boss’s office. Setting aside the one plot tangle, it’s a charming issue with the art to match. – Jamie Lovett
Rating: 4 out of 5

Kill All Immortals #4
Finding interesting angles for immortal beings can be difficult, but Kill All immortals has an excellent angle that makes for a compelling read. Mixing this father/daughter rivalry and morality play with an organized crime saga is just really exciting stuff. These characters are fully realized and they fit seamlessly into the world that’s being created. – Charlie Ridgely
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Night Club 2 #3
Who knew that all it would take is a change of scenery for Mark Millar’s style to actually feel fresh. The scribe continues to explore superhero tropes through the lens of a horror comic in Night Club 2 and since he’s not making sure to have a piece of shock value every other page there’s a nice rhythm to the story. Night Club 2’s real highlight however remains the artwork by Juanan Ramírez with colors by Fabiana Mascolo, as the pair have created a distinct look that combines pop-superhero artwork with moody grim horror. The result is stunning splash pages and reveals when you turn the page that makes your jaw drop.
– Spencer Perry
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

‘Patra #3
‘Patra #3 is part crime, part horror and while there is a lot of promise in the story of Patra hunting down the crazed killer Jeremy Jones, there’s a lot of character development and particularly dialogue between Patra and her sister that feels a little drawn out and very tedious when we could, at three issues in, already be getting further in the story. It’s also not quite clear yet what is really going on which is something that we should have some inkling about at this point. Still, the chase is interesting and if things ever really come together, it could be a cool story. Right now it’s just lot of extra that doesn’t fully come together. – Nicole Drum
Rating: 2.5 out of 5

Power Rangers Across The Morphin Grid #1
Power Rangers fans have seen a number of their favorite Rangers appear in the comics, but with Power Rangers Across The Morphin Grid, they have a chance to see those characters written by the people that brought them to life on the screen. Across The Morphin Grid is a one-shot special featuring five stories from franchise favorites, including David Yost, Nakia Burrise (with JD Sutphin), Steve Cardenas (with Mat Groom), Walter Jones, and Meghan Camarena, and while some are stronger than others, they all capture the core elements that made their characters such favorites to begin with. Billy’s Metamorphosis takes a trip to the future with out of this world style thanks to Patrick Mulholland and Ellie Wright, while Tanya’s Heavy-Metal Rescue is a thrilling Alpha team-up with the stellar art of Tango and JP Jordan. In The Red by Groom, Cardenas, Anand Ramcheron, and Francesco Segala might be my favorite in terms of highlighting the underrated aspects of a Ranger. An Apple A Day is solid and has some fun moments, though the issue ramps up the fun with Camarena, Paulina Ganucheau, and Rebecca Good’s hilarious Chloe’s Chaos Kitchen, which is the type of HyperForce absurdity we’ve missed so much. Overall it’s a thoroughly entertaining one-shot that will delight fans of the franchise. – Matthew Aguilar

Red Sonja #15
While the art in Red Sonja #15 leaves a bit to be desired, story wise it’s an interesting read. I am admittedly jumping into this one blind, but the issue overall does a surprising job of getting the reader up to speed without being overly repetitive about what is happening and what Sonja is facing. There is also plenty of action to keep things moving as well as Sonja finds herself trying to run from death only to end up in a dire situation. There are seemingly real stakes here which makes it all that much more interesting. – Nicole Drum
Rating: 3 out of 5

Sonic The Hedgehog #74
Sonic the Hedgehog #74 brings the series’ racing arc to a satisfying climax. The villain is revealed, and the endgame is set in motion, but what’s charming is that it doesn’t fall entirely to the heroes. Regular folks doing their jobs and looking out for another also play a crucial role. Whether the idea that a villain’s wrongdoing being revealed would lead to their downfall or any real consequences is wholesome or naive will likely be determined by each reader’s level of cynicism. The artwork gives the issue a comic, cartoonish energy, with layouts providing the perfect timing for certain comedic bits and the story playing out at a lively pace.  As multiple points of tension hang in the balance and lives are on the line, Sonic and most of the book’s major characters spring into action, teeing up what’s shaping up to be a fun, kinetic, and dramatic finale. – Jamie Lovett

Halloween falls on a Thursday night this year, which means that in addition to all the Halloween parties, events, and trick-r-treating, there are also going to be some fun group outings to the movies in the hopes of seeing something spooky, chilling, or horrifying on the big screen. Lucky for them, horror has become as much of a go-to for studios as superhero films have; Halloween 2024 has no less than half a dozen different horror flicks currently playing in theaters, which fans can choose from.

Here are your choices!

Best Horror Movies to See in Theaters During Halloween 2024

Smile 2

Smile 2 is the sequel to the breakout hit 2022 film by writer-producer-director Parker Finn. In the sequel, the concept of a grinning supernatural entity passed as a trauma virus gets applied to mega pop star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) who has to face an entire menacing public before launching her world tour.

Smile 2 has been overwhelmingly hailed as being far superior to the original film, not to mention one of the best horror films of the year. Star Naomi Scott (Power Rangers, Disney’s Aladdin) has even been sparking talk about awards nominations (Golden Globe, Oscar) for her performance. With its mix of psychological, supernatural, and bloody gore horror, Smile 2 delivers on all fronts.

Terrifier 3

Art the clown (David Howard Thornton) in “Terrifier 3”

Art the Clown has grown from an indie-horror hopeful to one of the biggest icons of the Halloween 2024 season. Writer-producer-director Damien Leone’s threequel Terrifier 3 has also become the “double-dare-you to see it” horror movie event of the year, with scenes so graphic and disturbing that even the crew of the film was unnerved by them.

If you are looking for the hardest of the hardcore horror movies for your Halloween viewing experience, look no further.

The Substance

the-substance-movie-demi-moore.jpg
Demi Moore in The Substance

The Substance is the dark horse breakout horror hit of the season, and it’s building bigger hype every day. Writer-producer-director Coralie Fargeat delivers one of the best and most biting satirical horror films in years — one with an insane body-horror bend. The story follows former movie star Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) who celebrates her 50th (and a severe injury) by taking a black market drug called “the Substance,” which creates a much younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley).

We’ll stop there, as the actual mechanics of using the substance (and the inevitable cost) are the true “horror” of Fargeat’s film. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are both earning big praise for their respective performances, while Coralie Faregeat is being saluted for her Cronenberg-ian Freaky Friday takedown of Hollywood beauty standards.

Heretic*

Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed in Heretic

This new film by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods is going to be opening in theaters the week after Halloween — but if The Simpsons can do Halloween specials a week (or so) later, why not this list?

Heretic explores the dark, twisted, story of two Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) who come to the wrong house. That house is owned by “Mr. Reed” (Hugh Grant), who turns out to have a deeply nefarious reason for luring the two girls into his house — one that could break their faith, as well as take their life.

Check out our interviews with the Heretic Cast & Crew

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Warner Bros. Pictures

On the lighter side of things: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is still in theaters, and some fans may have been waiting for the Halloween holiday to enjoy it!

In the sequel film, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) returns to Winter River with her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) and stepmother Delia (Catherine O’Hara) to bury her father Charles. Unfortunately, old ghosts still haunt that town, and before long Astrid is snatched into the Ghost World, forcing Lydia and Delia to ally with Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to get her back.

Tim Burton seems to have struck cult-hit gold again, as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice remained at the top of the box office for three consecutive weeks, and continues to play in theaters nearly two months after opening (it even beat Joker 2).

Speak No Evil

speak-no-evil-2024-movie-reviews.jpg

If you like thrillers more than straight-up horror, then Speak No Evil is the one for you to see this year. The remake of the Danish original film turns every couple’s least-favorite social situation (forced company with another couple/family) and turns it into an excruciating downward spiral of increasing tension and awkwardness — and that’s before it crashes out into a full-on slasher/survival experience.

It’s James McAvoy’s biggest “must-see” performance since M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, and concrete proof that the former X-Men actor is uniquely talented at playing a terrifying villain.

Re-Releases

longlegs-nicolas-cage-name-explained.jpg
Nicolas Cage in Longlegs

Check your local theater listings! Movie re-releases have become a regular part of the industry — and seasonal re-releases are a growing trend.

During Halloween 2024, we’ve seen the Texas Chain Saw Massacre back in theaters for its 50th Anniversary, as well as the animated classic The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the seasonal classic, Hocus Pocus.

Also back in theaters are more recent films like horror-comedy hit Happy Death Day and cult-horror hit The Black Phone. During Devil’s Night (October 30th) and Halloween (October 31st), you can find the horror-gaming adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s and Laika Studios’ stop-motion classic Coraline back in theaters (respectively).

Finally, if you missed one of the biggest indie-horror hits of 2024, Longlegs, it is also running in theaters again throughout Halloween.

From Tower of God to Solo Leveling and True Beauty, webtoons are taking over anime. We have seen the industry explode in recent years, and as webtoons become bigger, more fields are eyeing web comics. Anime has been at the forefront, and thanks to a new report, we have learned Studio Pierrot is jumping into the fray. The studio behind Naruto and Bleach is teaming up with a South Korean animator to bring webtoons to the screen.

As you can see below, Studio Pierrot and Red Dog Culture House have come together. The two companies have locked in a partnership, and it will bring their teams together. Moving forward, the companies will do joint productions targeting “global” audiences, and the partnership will focus on Latna Saga.

Studio Pierrot Is Getting Into Webtoons at Last

According to the deal, Latna Saga: The Survival Sword King is the first IP gunning for an adaptation under this deal. The series will move into production later this year, so no release window has been decided. However, the anime adaptation of Latna Saga could arrive as soon as 2025 if industry trends hold up.

As for this specific deal with Studio Pierrot, it is expected to last three years. It will be back by investment and funding from Japanese production companies. Once Latna Saga has been handled, future projects will be up for grabs as Studio Pierrot and Red Dog Culture House have more IPs in their future.

Now if you are not familiar with Latna Saga, the webtoon went live in 2019 under creators YKB and Soon Q. Studio Khit oversees the web comic, and it tells the story of Hanbin Ryu as he is taken to a new world isekai style. Following a career in the military, Hanbin is keen to fight, but things go wrong with his isekai hop. The man took 20 years to travel, and when he reaches his new world, Hanbin is faced with a society that hates travelers. He is forced to rank up his reputation in-world to show the world wrong, and of course, plenty of villains made themselves known to the Sword King.

Anime Is Expanding Its Webtoon Ties in Big Ways

Clearly, Studio Pierrot is ready to turn its attention to webtoons, and this kind of expansion is warranted. When it comes to graphic novels, manga and webtoons are leading the game globally. Series like Solo Leveling have earned billions of views to date, and their anime adaptations are popping. Next January, Solo Leveling season two will make its grand debut, and hype for the show is high.

There is no denying the anime industry’s interest in webtoons, so Studio Pierrot’s new partnership will expand its reach. This year, shows like True Beauty brought their anime to life, and Tower of God season two made its grand debut. From The God of High School to Noblesse, the list of anime webtoons is growing by the day. So while Studio Pierrot keeps focus on Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, well – you should know its staff is also looking at WEBTOON and Tapas for new projects.

What do you make of this latest anime x webtoon deal? What webtoon series would you like to see tackle the small screen? Give me a shout at @meganwpeters with your take! You can also let us know what you think over on X (Twitter) and Instagram.

Announced on October 30, Death Note: Killer Within is a social deduction game which pits Light Yagami (a.k.a. Kira), and his equally demented Kira Followers, against (Interpol Detective) L and a squad of investigators in a classic battle of the wits. Here’s a quick description to save you a click. Stop me when you’ve heard this one before.

Killer Within is game of two phases. The Action Phase sees players gather clues and complete tasks as they move through the overworld. The Meeting Phase brings everyone together to discuss their findings and establish suspects. The game can end in a few ways. Team Kira will win if L is eliminated. Team L will win if Kira is arrested. Alternatively, whichever team fills up the Progress gauge (tied to the aforementioned tasks) will take home the victory.

Now, there’s nothing inherently wrong with this—Death Note makes for an admittedly compelling setting for such a game—but don’t you feel like you’ve already played this by now? Overlooking the obvious examples, there was already a version of this game done on Nintendo DS back in 2007.

Death Note: Kira Game never received a U.S. release, but there’s plenty of footage of it on YouTube, and fans translated the whole game to English years ago. Now, it goes without saying, but Killer Within is a dramatic step up in quality from a mid-2000s text-based handheld game. I personally don’t care for the toddler toy shaped-character models or their hauntingly empty eyes, but there is a novelty to the game’s inoffensive aesthetic compared to the grim, grisly nature of the manga and anime.

We haven’t seen much gameplay, but the quick glimpses in the reveal trailer look like a refined version of what Konami was going for all those years ago. Is it an improvement? Absolutely. Is it interesting? Not really, and that’s a major letdown for something as cool as cool and powerful as the Death Note.

However, maybe that’s unfair. Perhaps Fisher-Price Death Note will surprise me and be the game of my dreams. It’s free via PlayStation Plus (as part of November’s PS Plus lineup), so I’ll certainly give it an honest shot, but from the outside looking in, I can’t help but feel like we’ve already walked this path, and that the game is doomed from the start.

Anime adaptation video games have been stuck in a box for a long time. Fighting shows get the Ultimate Ninja Storm wrapping. More complex fantasy shows get the .HACK treatment. Everything else is consigned to the dark depths of mobile game genericism—uninspired Puzzle games, worn out Gacha systems, and the general death of all creativity.

There’s no reinventing the wheel here. Just by-the-numbers social deduction.

Sure, it feels awesome to jump into a brawler filled with your favorite Jujutsu Kaisen characters, but when every single franchise starts to feel the same, what’s left to do? Killer Within is a step out of those particular confines, but only by the thinnest of margins, which is a bit ridiculous for such a high-quality franchise. Death Note is a transcendental story. It stands the test of time as one of fiction’s best mysteries, thrillers, and psychological horrors ever. Just look at the sales numbers. The manga has received a barrage of adaptations and cultivated a legacy as strong as near any piece of popular fiction in the last twenty years. So, why have we not cracked the code on a proper videogame adaptation?

The easy answer lies in the story’s core identity. Death Note is super cerebral. Maybe there’s no way to make a compelling game when 90% of the drama takes place in the brain of deranged criminal (and the genius-level investigator who is chasing him.) Perhaps there’s no way to make an interesting game primarily about constructing a flawless string of murders. Especially not one that would require you to switch to the POV of various citizens of the most populous metropolitan area in the world. In fact, I can’t think of a single successful game that manages to balance methodical, slice-of-life concepts with anything bizarre at all. Maybe it is all too much. Too bad there’s no established formula for interesting choice-based games in the horror-thriller genre either.

Look, none of this is to say Killer Within won’t be fun. I still think you should give it a shot. I’m simply disappointed anime fans rarely get to dream big. Just like Death Note, other proven properties struggle to get a shred of original content. We’ve gone nearly 20 years without a Cowboy Bebop game. Doesn’t that feel criminal? I don’t want to wear a Faye Valentine skin in Overwatch 2, I want to be Faye Valentine and get up to hijinks on the Bebop. In that way, Death Note: Killer Within feels equally lame.

This is still a step in the right direction, given the entire game could have been an Among Us crossover, but the industry’s internal compass is way off. It’s a long way back to the trail, too. At this rate, we’ll never get that Dr. Stone open-world survival game of my dreams, and who wants to live in a world without that?

It’s wild to think that at one point, Bleach was facing cancellation. Once the original anime series came to a close, many shonen fans never believed that the Thousand-Year Blood War would ever come to the screen. The Soul Society, luckily, proved many fans wrong by not just returning to television but taking the anime world by storm once again. While Studio Pierrot is the production house responsible for the latest anime episodes, Bleach creator Tite Kubo has been working alongside the animators on this recent season. On top of the collaboration, Kubo has been working to create a new fashion line that takes some major inspiration from the shonen series.

Bleach has always been a series that has had a unique take on fashion in general. While Ichigo and the Shinigami might routinely wear their normal attire while fighting against Hollows, Arrancar, and the Sternritter, the opening and ending themes would feature new fashion for its heroes and villains alike. Such has been the case with the Thousand-Year Blood War, as Bleach has once again proven that it can be a juggernaut in the anime fashion business. It goes to show just how talented creator Tite Kubo is now that he is helping to create a real-life fashion line.

Bleach’s Fashion Line

The latest social media post from Tite Kubo’s official account highlights the fashion design, while also sharing details on the upcoming line, “A new illustration drawn for the special project by Kubo Tite and Maison Margiela has been released! The full-body illustration will also be published on the article page in the December 2024 issue of UOMO.”

While this fashion line hasn’t been confirmed to arrive in North America, Bleach’s popularity might give it a good chance. There are quite a few Western fans that have fallen in love with Ichigo and company, to say nothing of their unique styles.

The Blood War Continues

The third part of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has been a major part of this anime fall season. When we had previously left Yhwach and his war against the Soul King, the leader of the Sternritter was looking to take over the afterlife while gaining his revenge for the outcome of the original conflict. Unfortunately for Ichigo, his status as a Quincy has had an unforeseen circumstance wherein he came quite close to eradicating the Soul King himself, as vengeance has been built into his DNA.

As of the writing of this article, it has yet to be confirmed if Bleach’s anime will continue past the Blood War. While Kubo himself did weave a tale that came after the fight against Yhwach in Bleach: No Breathes From Hell, there has been no word that it will be animated or will continue the Soul Society’s journey in Weekly Shonen Jump. Considering just how successful the Thousand-Year Blood War has been on the small screen, the future might be looking bright for Ichigo and his comrades.

What do you think of this fresh new fashion line from Bleach’s creator? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly @EVComedy to talk all things comics and anime.

Deadpool Team-Up: Deadpool & Wolverine vs. the Hulk

Deadpool & Wolverine smashed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and teased Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and a brown-and-tan-clad Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) vs. the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). But the cameo scene, which paid homage to Todd McFarlane’s iconic cover of 1987’s The Incredible Hulk #340, cut away from the action before the Merc with a Mouth and the berserker mutant could face off against the angry Avenger. The new issue of Rob Liefeld’s last Deadpool comic, Deadpool Team-Up #3, delivered on that fight.

The circumstances are similar. But instead of the Void, Deadpool and Wolverine end up in Weirdworld, a domain composed of former magical realms. After a ninja clan tasked Wade Wilson with — deep breath — collecting dragon eggs that have been hidden by Ral Dorn, Dragon Lord, Wade learned that the warlord Baron Skagerackrakor stole Ral’s sacred staff so he could overthrow Ral as the rightful ruler of his home dimension of Rammatpolen and take revenge for his father’s defeat at Ral’s hands (in 1981’s Fantastic Four Annual #16).

Ral reclaimed his Dragonstaff and opened a portal to Weirdworld, where the heroes met a long-lost hero from the 1980s: Crystar, Lord of Crystalium, who hid the sacred dragon’s eggs within the catacombs under Crater Lake on Weirdworld. As they waded through the swamps, they were attacked by a towering Swamp Serpent, so Ral, calling on the sorcery of Rammatpolen, opened a portal to summon a champion: “A savage dragon to fell this serpent.”

Instead of Image’s finned, green-skinned superhero, Ral accidentally called forth another green goliath: the Hulk. This week’s Deadpool Team-Up #3 begins with Wade, Wolverine, Ral, and Crystar trying to convince the “Dragonslayer” to help them find the eggs, but an enraged Hulk only wants to smash the puny humans. Hulk shatters Crystar (whose body of enchanted crystals can reform itself) and goes toe-to-toe with Wolverine, who has “181 reasons” to put Hulk down (a reference to their first fight in 1974’s Incredible Hulk #181).

The rampaging Hulk swats Wolverine away, but the adamantium-clawed X-Man is as small and fast as Hulk is big and slow. Wade shoots Hulk in the face to prevent him from hitting what he can’t see, but Hulk gets his hands on Wade and slams him into the ground. Ral, who has no need for the emerald warrior now that he defeated the Swamp Serpent, ends the fight and sends the Hulk back to his realm on Earth. They find the eggs, and the issue ends with Wade wielding a golden sword: the Dragonslayer.

Just then, three Liefeld creations step out of the shadows to warn that taking the dragon eggs would be “the end of everything”: Cable, Lady Deadpool, and Major X, the son of Cable and the mutant goddess Storm from an alternate future. Deadpool Team-Up will conclude with a fifth and final issue on Jan. 22.

Kelly Macdonald is the newest addition to HBO’s Lanterns series, and she may be playing the love interest for Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan. Lanterns is a live-action adaptation of DC’s Green Lanterns headlined by Kyle Chandler as veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, and Aaron Pierre as the new recruit on the block, John Stewart. Macdonald is no stranger to HBO, having starred as Margaret Thompson on Boardwalk Empire during its run on the premium network. She earned an Emmy nomination for the role, and won an Emmy for her performance in the BBC TV movie The Girl in the Café.

Deadline reports Kelly Macdonald is playing Sheriff Kerry, who is “a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town. Her resilience, shaped by a complex past that’s hardened her resolve, anchors her when the community’s secrets begin to surface.” Sheriff Kerry is believed to be a romantic love interest for Chandler’s Hal Jordan, who has been linked to Carol Ferris in the comics. However, it doesn’t appear that Macdonald is portraying a live-action version of Carol Ferris.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. The Green Lantern show has been compared to True Detective as far as the vibe that the creatives are going for.

Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective: Night Country) is the showrunner for Lanterns, with Mundy co-writing alongside Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers), and DC comic writer Tom King. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Gets Another Unexpected Update https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/spider-man-2-update-ps5-pro-patch-notes/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 18:02:56 +0000 https://comicbook.com/?p=1194077

Another new update for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been released by Insomniac Games on PS5. This past week, Insomniac surprised fans by letting loose patch 1.004.000, which notably brought about PS5 Pro support for Spider-Man 2. In the wake of the update going live, though, it seems that it also ushered in some additional problems that players have since been trying to resolve. Fortunately, Insomniac has been quick to act and has now released its second patch in less than a week for the latest Spider-Man game.

Available to download now, update version 1.004.001 for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a pretty small one. The patch only addresses four things in total, with the most prominent fix being related to flickering during fast travel sequences. Other than this, Insomniac has also altered some localization errors and has tweaked an issue with the mask of the Advanced Tech Suit for Miles Morales which was appearing as white mistakenly. Lastly, general stability improvements were the only other thing in mention with this new Spider-Man 2 update.

Moving forward, it’s likely that this could be one of the final updates for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5. Insomniac confirmed earlier in the month that it wouldn’t be releasing any DLC for the game, much to the disappointment of many fans. As a result, other than launching a PC port in 2025, this could mark the end of Insomniac’s time with Spider-Man 2. Whether or not any other content or updates will roll out in the future currently isn’t known, but it seems apparent that Insomniac is ready to turn the page to its next major project, which should be that of Marvel’s Wolverine.

If you’d like to get a full look at the patch notes for this new Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 update, you can find them attached below.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Update 1.004.001 Patch Notes

  • Addresses an issue where the mask on Miles’ Advanced Tech Suit was white across different styles
  • Stability improvements
  • Fixes for possible flickering during fast travel introduced in 1.004.000
  • Adjustments to localized options descriptions introduced in 1.004.000

Official art of Legoshi from Beastars overlayed on top of art from Paru Itagaki's newest manga

When Beastars by Paru Itagaki originally launched in 2016, it very quickly gained notoriety for its expressive art style, as well as its incredibly unique world – in place of human protagonists, Beastars is a story told through the lens of anthropomorphic animals living in a modernized society in place of humans. The manga excelled in telling a compelling coming-of-age story that challenged many common struggles that young people face as they enter adulthood by reimagining many of those struggles as a conflict between being born as a carnivore, or an herbivore.

Beastars was incredibly successful, having over 7.5 million copies in circulation by the time the series ended, and received a gorgeous anime adaption courtesy of Orange. Paru Itagaki has experimented with other types of stories, encapsulating everything from an autobiographical essay manga to an action-packed Santa Claus-themed shonen series. Her latest upcoming series, Ushimitsu Gao, which is slated to begin serializing in Champion Cross, might take the cake as her most unhinged work yet.

Ushimitsu Gao Explores a Peculiar Love Triangle

Paru Itagaki’s latest work follows a married thirty-two-year-old woman named Megumi Sano with a strong sense for the supernatural trying to have a baby with her husband. One night, she notices what appears to be a ghost watching them from a corner in their home, and instead of being frightened, is overwhelmed with a feeling of shame. From that point forward, the ghost visits her every night and begins to put her into a state of sleep paralysis, which, interestingly, reminds her of bondage – and not in a negative way. The series is categorized as a horror romance, but with no official English translation as of writing, details regarding the story are still relatively sparse. The manga is currently available on Champion Cross, and began serializing on October 16, 2024.

This, of course, isn’t Itagaki’s first time writing an offbeat love story. One of her more popular mini-series, Drip Drip, followed a similarly macabre, raunchy premise, which follows a young woman who gets a nosebleed any time she encounters something that she perceives as dirty, which makes her intimate love life extremely difficult. Her most popular work, Beastars, explores plenty of complicated romantic relationships as well, with many of the series’ core couples struggling with their identities as predator and prey. While Ushimitsu Gao may sound like her most unhinged serialized work so far, if anyone can pull off a quirky adult drama this intense, it’s Paru Itagaki.

Classic Godzilla Producer Believes the Kaiju’s Current Era Is Perfect https://comicbook.com/anime/news/godzilla-modern-era-shin-vs-minus-one-producer/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 17:13:53 +0000 https://comicbook.com/?p=1194045 Toho

Godzilla is easily one of the most popular and recognizable kaiju to ever hit the silver screen. Since hitting theaters in the 1950s, the king of the monsters has taken many forms to help increase his rampaging longevity. Whether it be via Legendary’s MonsterVerse or with the Academy Award-winning film, Godzilla Minus One, it doesn’t appear as though the kaiju king’s reign will be ending any time soon. In a recent interview with a long-running Toho producer, the modern era of the lizard king is explored and said producer explains why now might be the best time for the giant monster.

Godzilla Minus One and Shin Godzilla are often referred to as two examples of the best that the king of the monsters has to offer. While Shin was created by director Hideaki Anno and takes place in the present, Minus One examines a very different take on the lizard king during a different Japanese era. While it’s debatable which of these two films reigns supreme, they both remain exemplary examples of what Godzilla can be not just in terms of witnessing kaiju destruction on a massive scale but the ways that humanity can unite and/or dissolve in the face of such a rampage.

Toho

Godzilla’s Modern Era

Producer Shogo Tomiyama has been with the kaiju king for quite some time. Having a major hand in the “Heisei” and “Millennium” eras of Godzilla, Shogo first began with 1989’s Godzilla Vs. Biollante and continued to play a role for twelve movies in total. In discussing Godzilla’s modern era, Tomiyama noted his love of both Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One, proving how versatile the giant beast can truly be.

“I think that their directors’ artistic talents are infused throughout the films and that they are both wonderful works that are highly artistic, with a passion for creation and rare imagination. I expect and have a hunch that we will see more Godzilla films with strong artistic qualities in the future. But, the two most recent films do not really show Godzilla’s creative intention of being ‘scary but cute’.”

Toho

Godzilla’s Future in America And Japan

On the Western Front, Godzilla has quite a few avenues to return thanks to Legendary’s MonsterVerse. Following the success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, a third film in the crossover series has already been confirmed. On top of the theatrical plans, Apple TV+ has renewed Monarch: Legacy of Monsters for a second season, once again revisiting the kaiju-examining organization. If these two venues weren’t enough, the streaming service also confirmed that a spin-off series is in the works, though little to no details have been revealed as of yet.

When it comes to the Godzilla of Japan, the king of the monsters’ future is still anyone’s guess. Despite the massive critical, financial, and audience success of Godzilla Minus One, a sequel film has yet to be confirmed. That hasn’t stopped director Takashi Yamazaki from stating his desire to return to this universe as the creator has hinted that he’d love to give Godzilla a monstrous adversary should he make a comeback. While the latest Toho film saw Godzilla blown to pieces, the final moments of the film hinted at the fact that nothing can keep the lizard king down as his very cells appear to be reconstructing themselves.

Want to stay up to date on the King of the Monsters’ future, in both North America and Japan? Follow along with Team Anime on ComicBook.com for the latest updates on Godzilla and hit me up directly @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and kaiju.

Seinfeld 4K and bluray complete series box sets

Even though Seinfeld ended its run back in 1998, the show remains one of the most popular of all-time. The ending of Curb Your Enthusiasm even made the divisive finale retroactively great. That said, a 4K Blu-ray set of the complete series is long overdue. Actually, we didn’t even have a Blu-ray set up to this point, so this promises to be a special day for fans as we’re getting both options.

Indeed, Seinfeld is now available in a Complete Series 4K Blu-ray box set that you can pre-order here on Amazon for $249.99. Note that it is a limited edition, so if only 4K will do, reserve one as soon as possible. Also keep in mind that the 4K release will bring back the original 1.33 aspect ratio.

If Blu-ray will suffice, you can grab that here on Amazon for $149.99. Both will arrive on December 17th, making it the ideal holiday gift for a superfan. Unfortunately, such extravagant gift-giving isn’t in keeping with the Festivus holiday, but we bet they won’t mind. A full breakdown of special features and technical info can be found below,

Curb Your Enthusiasm “Fixes” The Seinfeld Finale

Though the Curb Your Enthusiasm finale was generally well received, executive producer Jeff Schaffer made his feelings known to The Wrap regarding anyone that took issue with it:

“No, I mean it was like, we’re giving you the Seinfeld finale on steroids. We’re owning that Larry’s learned nothing, so if you don’t like it, too bad, we don’t care,” Schaffer explained. “There was never hesitation not to do it, because it felt right.”

“There’s just a lot of work on making sure that it’s not just that, that it’s also a funny episode of Curb,” he added. “It was very important for us that the final episode was a good episode of Curb. So that was the part that was the most difficult, weaving these stories together and having some of them blow up in court.”

Schaffer mused, “I mean, having Susie in a blonde wig, in a wheelchair, to grudgingly go along with Larry, only to have that blow up in his face… those are Curb stories that are happening and coming to a denouement in the trial itself. It was really important that it wasn’t just a trial with our guys sitting there.”

Marvel Animation's Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Disney+ has thwipped up the first footage from Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Marvel Studios unveiled a sizzle reel for its upcoming slate of 2025 TV projects, including first looks at the new Spider-Man animated series (Jan. 29), Black Panther spinoff Eyes of Wakanda (Aug. 6), and Marvel Zombies (Oct. 2025), plus the live-action Marvel Television series Daredevil: Born Again (March 4, 2025), Ironheart (June 24), and Wonder Man (Dec. 2025).

Fans can get their first look at the next Marvel Animation series in the video below, which shows Peter Parker (voiced by Hudson Thames) suited up in a prototype Spider-Man suit and the more classic red-and-blues. The footage also shows some of the supporting cast of characters that includes Harry Osborn (Zeno Robinson), Lonnie Lincoln (Eugene Byrd), Nico Minoru of the Runaways (Grace Song), Amadeus Cho, and Norman Osborn (voiced by Colman Domingo).

Marvel Comics will publish a five-issue prequel to the animated series starting in December, before the show’s series premiere on Jan. 29. The series, set during Peter Parker’s freshman year as a newbie crime-fighting vigilante, is inspired by the MCU Spider-Man but takes place in an alternate timeline.

Jeff Trammel (Disney’s Amphibia and The Owl House, Cartoon Network’s Craig of the Creek) created and executive produces Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which “follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots,” per the official synopsis.

“Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is amazing, to say the least,” Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming, television, and animation for Marvel Studios, told ComicBook, adding the show is “very much like a cut” from the classic Stan Lee and Steve Ditko era of The Amazing Spider-Man comic books.

“It’s Peter Parker back in high school just trying to make it work, take care of his aunt, completely broke, and having to be a superhero,” Winderbaum teased. “It’s so essentially Spider-Man. And what Jeff Trammell did, which I think people are going to love, is he built this ensemble of characters around Peter that you fall in love with. Similarly, just because it’s long-form storytelling, as those relationships brew when the stakes rise in that first season, things feel really tragic and dangerous, and pretty incredible. So, I love that show.”

That cast of characters includes Kari Wahlgren (Spidey and His Amazing Friends) as Peter’s Aunt May, Hugh Dancy (Law & Order) as Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus, and Charlie Cox (Daredevil) as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. In addition to Doc Ock, other villains announced to appear in the series include Unicorn, Chameleon, Scorpion, Speed Demon, Tarantula, the Rhino, Butane, and Carmela Black.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man premieres Jan. 29, 2025, on Disney+.

Two years after appearing on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, musician Megan Thee Stallion took to social media this weekend to move from Marvel to DC. The “Hot Girl Summer” singer shared her Halloween costume: an elaborate Starfire suit, inspired more by the comic books than the animated or live-action TV versions. Megan Thee Stallion took to social media to share a quartet of images, including one in which she was edited onto the cover of Tales of the New Teen Titans #4, a Starfire solo story.

The shimmering violet one-piece bikini costume is adorned with a gold-and-red gem on its belt line, and she’s wearing an elaborate red wig that calls back to the giant hair Starfire has in the comics.

Starfire, who first appeared in DC Comics Presents #26, was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Perez in 1980. She would go on to become a key part of their run on The New Teen Titans and one of the most popular characters of the 1980s.

You can see one of the images below, or check out the rest in her post.

Unsurprisingly, these images have generated a lot of traction, with even DC Studios co-chief James Gunn sharing them on Instagram stories and Threads. Obviously, it isn’t entirely uncommon for big celebrities to dress as comic book superheroes for Halloween, but it’s certainly notable that someone who is as big as Megan Thee Stallion is right now has such commitment to the costume and photoshoot, for a character most casual fans hardly recognize.

Starfire is Koriand’r, an alien princess who fled her kingdom following a coup led by her unhinged sister and ended up on Earth as part of the Teen Titans. Often paired with Dick Grayson/Nightwing as a romantic couple, Starfire has become a fan-favorite over the years, and has spun off into her own solo adventures on numerous occasions, including a well-regarded recent run by Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner, the team that made Harley Quinn into a best-selling comic book.

Besides being a near-constant on Titans teams, Starfire has been part of the Justice League, R.E.B.E.L.S., Red Hood’s Outlaws, and a number of other DC Universe groups. She is a fan-favorite in part because of her good, gentle nature.

The character has appeared in numerous DC animated series and movies. She made her live-action debut in Titans, played by Anna Diop, who played the character for the show’s entire four-season run.
