DC fans are patiently waiting for the first Superman trailer, and they recently got some good news from James Gunn. It feels like a lifetime ago we got the announcement that James Gunn and Peter Safran were spearheading DC Studios and rebooting the DC Universe. The first motion picture in the pipeline is Superman starring David Corenswet. Filming for Superman wrapped over the summer, and now all that’s left is to wait for the anticipated trailer. We have no idea when the Superman trailer will be released, but Gunn did provide an update on the trailer’s status.

James Gunn responded to a comment on Threads asking about the progress of the Superman trailer and whether it was finished. “It’s not. I worked on it this weekend,” Gunn replied. As you can imagine, there were a lot of responses to that comment from Gunn, with fans asking if it’s the teaser trailer or full trailer, who is composing the music, along with asking Gunn not to spoil the entire Superman movie in the trailer. That’s become a recent trend with trailers, as they’ve started revealing more and more of the film and leaving very little for audiences to see in theaters.

When will James Gunn release the Superman trailer?

Since we know James Gunn has been working on the trailer for Superman, the next round of speculation moves to when will the trailer be released. We’re coming to the end of the year, and Superman won’t hit theaters until July 11, 2025. If we look ahead at the calendar, one timeframe does look like the perfect time for DC Studios to offer the first peek at the new Man of Steel.

The one day of the year that is almost defined by the sheer number of high-profile trailers revealed for the first time is Super Bowl Sunday. The game that decides the champions of the NFL draws one of the largest audiences each year, so studios make sure to pay top dollar to premiere trailers for their upcoming movies. Last year we had the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine. It makes the most sense for DC to drop the Superman trailer during the Super Bowl in order to have the most eyes on it as possible.

DC sleuths also think the Superman trailer could be released in December during CCXP. James Gunn didn’t confirm the suspicions, but he did give the comment a thinking emoji in response. So should we take that as a denial? It’s hard to say. Also, if the trailer for Superman does come at CCXP, there’s hope that DC releases it online so people not at the convention can also watch it.

James Gunn’s Superman (2025) will open the door to a whole new vision of the DC Universe franchise, meaning fans will be getting to know new versions of iconic DC characters. Casting actor David Corenswet as the new Clark Kent/Superman got a big reaction from fans of the old DCEU era, which had Henry Cavill as its Superman. There was far more unified praise over the casting of Rachel Brosnahan as the new Lois Lane. Fans have made it clear they like this recast, but how does former Lois Lane actress Amy Adams feel about it?

When speaking with Variety, Amy Adams (Man of Steel, Justice League) had nothing but love for Rachel Brosnahan, saying, “I love her. She’s gonna be great. Hopefully, the role will be infused with her sensibility and her natural humor and strength and wit. I’m really looking forward to it. I really like her… “I’m just a big fan of the franchise, always.”

Adams also made sure to emphasize her own outlook on acting, which is that no one actor owns a character – especially in a long-running franchise like Superman: “Coming from theater, a role never belongs to you,” Adams explained. “You just do a take on it. That’s how I feel about that franchise.”

The six-time Oscar nominee went on to wish director James Gunn well in his efforts to relaunch the Superman movie franchise and cleared up any misconception about how her time in the DC movie franchise came to an end: “I always understood they were moving in a more Justice League direction.”

henry-cavill-superman.jpg

DCEU fans can hold their heads high: Adams made sure to show respect to her Man of Steel and Justice League co-star Henry Cavill, and his performance as Superman: “Henry was a really brilliant Superman,” Adams said. “I offer every Superman luck and stuff, but I think he was great. I just wanted to say that. It’s so in his spirit.”

Cavill and Adams’ time as Superman and Lois has officially come to an end with the launch of DC Studios and the new DC Universe franchise – something that will forever leave fans divided, since many DCEU fans felt that Cavill’s Superman (and his relationship with Lois Lane) never got the full arc that director Zack Snyder planned for it.

Amy Adams’ DCEU Arc As Lois Lane Explained

Snyder’s epic three-part Justice League Trilogy would have made the life of Adams’ Lois Lane a major nexus point in the DCEU timeline. She would’ve been killed by Darkseid in Justice League II, turning Superman evil and creating the “Knightmare” timeline glimpsed in both Batman v Superman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Justice League III would’ve brought the entire story full circle, as Flash went back in time (twice) to warn Bruce Wayne/Batman of Lois’s death, helping prevent it so that Superman stays good and helps repel Darkseid’s invasion of Earth.

Superman (2025) has a release date of July 11, 2025.

Superman director James Gunn posted his reaction to an AI version of the upcoming trailer for the 2025 movie. Now, the trailer in question is not real in any way shape or form. Let’s get that out of the way. Gunn saw the “Superman” clip circulating on social media and decided to comment with three vomiting emojis. That makes sense, not only does circulating a clip like this produce misinformation that he has to waste time addressing now, but it also continues in the information ecosystem after this debunking. Quite simply, not enough people use Twitter to see this kind of correction. (This article could help in that regard, but honestly, even 20 of these might not do the trick.) As the rise of AI generated models has occurred, more and more of these fake trailers have made the rounds. Fans that don’t know what signs to look for or are just ill-informed and take them as gospel.

It’s hard to tell if the version of Superman in this clip is supposed to be David Corenswet or the former Man of Steel, Henry Cavill. The problem with a lot of these models is that they build a composite image of the subject requested based on all available information. So you could ask for the actor that’s playing Clark Kent in the 2025 blockbuster, and other older versions are still going to make their way in there. The imagery at play borrows heavily from Zack Snyder’s version of The Man of Tomorrow as well. So, there’s just a lot going on in a short clip that isn’t in any way, shape, or form real. We’re all a bit poorer for it in this case as the eventual Superman trailer is going to be special after the extended wait for a DC solo movie for their flagship character.

Director is none too pleased.

Gunn has argued in the past that his projects give VFX teams time to complete the tasks at hand without resorting to shortcuts or frying themselves trying to meet a deadline. “If you do some research you’ll see my films have always taken a different approach and I’ve always given my VFX artist-collaborators time to do their jobs properly, and the respect they deserve,” Gunn previously told fans on Threads. “And the quality of the VFX in those films is uniformly great because of it (and because my friends at Weta and Framestore and ILM and more are amazingly talented).”

This is why we wrapped on Superman a year before release and why they’ve been hard at work on many shots for months before that,” Gunn continued. “This is why we start heartily editing during the shoot. It’s why I prepare so vigorously and why we only shoot finished screenplays. And Supergirl, which I’m not directing, is being handled the same way. I can’t praise the VFX artists that help us create magic enough.”

Superman movie Krypto the Superdog
Krypto and superman will be here soon.

So, no, that Superman trailer isn’t real and the full trailer is going to look better than what the mockups floating around on the Internet do right now. Fans currently speculate that the first clip from the movie might make landfall near the end of 2024. Gunn has been in post-production on Superman for a little while now. All of this is gleaned from different information sources around the Internet. For now, DC movie fans can take solace in the fact that Gunn and his team have no interest in these kinds of models. After all that controversy with The Flash, that’s probably a good thing.

DC Studios co-head James Gunn is making the case clear for the studio’s approach to the DC Universe: namely, that plans for some projects – even ones that have already been announced – may get revised or canceled altogether. In a new post on Threads, Gunn wanted to clarify a report on some of his comments about the DC Universe slate. When one outlet posted a report titled “James Gunn Assures Every Announced DCU Project Is Still Coming Despite Lack of Updates“, Gunn responded by “clarifying” some keywords in that title:

“Just to clarify, I said everything we originally announced was still in development not that it’s still coming,” Gunn wrote in his post, adding, “That all depends on the scripts! We’ll never put a half-assed script in production just because it was announced.”

The current slate of DC Studios projects that are actively in development or production (with firm release date windows) includes:

james-gunn-dc-studios-getty-images.jpg

For anyone who was around for the initial launch of the DC Studios imprint and the big reveal of its first slate, that list above is probably looking pretty sparse. Some of that is easily explained: we know that the Amanda Waller TV series has a creative team (showrunners/writers Christal Henry and Jeremy Carver), but won’t be released until after the events of Peacemaker Season 2 are revealed; that’s easily a case where plans could shift and change, based on any number of factors (Viola Davis’s availability, fan interest, Peacemaker S2’s performance, etc.). The same can be said of the Swamp Thing movie being developed by James Mangold: Mangold has a DC movie and a Star Wars movie on his plate, with both projects on unclear timelines of development.

Less certain are films like The Authority (which is rumored to be getting a speedy production as a followup to Superman (2025) – or the Batman reboot The Brave and the Bold (which has The Flash director Andy Muschietti attached, but little else). A Teen Titans movie has also been announced; the Wonder Woman prequel Paradise Lost is still in development, HBO’s Lanterns TV series is speeding down the pipeline – but who knows where the Booster Gold TV series is?

In terms of generating massive hype, acclaim, ratings, and box office returns, some of these DCU projects (Superman, Batman, Green Lanterns) will be more crucial to the franchise than others (Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, Swamp Thing, Waller). The fact that priorities and focuses could shift or change with time and (of course) the response to various pieces of content. The fact that Gunn and Peter Safran are already staying somewhat limber, ready to pivot, means they are wisely benefitting from realities of the industry that Marvel Studios had to learn the hard way (see: Phases 2 and 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe).

The DCU kicks off with Creature Commandos streaming on Max starting on December 5th.

A dog is a Man of Steel’s best friend. Director James Gunn on Tuesday shared the first official look at Krypto the Superdog in 2025’s Superman movie, showing Kal-El’s canine companion on the moon alongside David Corenswet’s Superman. The Super-Pet — who is inspired by Gunn’s rescued dog, Ozu — appears to be a photo-realistic CGI creation from the Oscar-nominated visual effects team behind Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which brought to life furred friends like Rocket Raccoon and talking dog Cosmo.

See the first look at Superman‘s Krypto in the image below.

“Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer,” the DC Studios co-chief and CEO wrote on social media. “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs and never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in and destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture — he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him.”

“I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script and changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life,” Gunn continued. “What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog Month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”

Gunn hinted at Krypto’s role in Superman last year when he tweeted an image of the “S” cape-clad art department mascot dog Nora, along with images of comic books that inspired Gunn’s Superman movie (previously titled Superman: Legacy). They included 2011’s Superman issue #712, titled “Lost Boy: A Tale of Krypto the Superdog,” and Krypto’s first appearance in 1955’s Adventure Comics #210, which introduced “the superdog of Krypton” as Superboy’s super-powered pet dog.

The Kryptonian canine became a recurring character in issues of Adventure Comics and Superboy, and went on to serve as a founding member of the Legion of Super-Pets — the animal branch of the Legion of Super-Heroes — alongside other super-powered animal sidekicks like Supergirl’s Comet the Super-Horse and Beppo the Super-Monkey. Krypto starred in the animated series Krypto the Superdog and the CG-animated feature film DC League of Super-Pets, and made his live-action debut in a second season episode of the DC Universe/HBO Max series Titans.

Superman — starring David Corenswet as Kal-El/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor — flies into theaters July 11, 2025.

James Gunn’s Superman, which is due in theaters in July 2025, already has an assembly cut in place as Gunn and his crew work on post-production. According to Gunn (on Threads), who was responding to online rumors that the movie already had an assembly cut, one has ben in place for a long time already. That may be surprising to comic book movie fans, since so many of those films seem to take right up until the last possible moment to wrap up, but Gunn’s process seems to be highly organized, with production and post-production done in a fairly short window.

Certainly, that hasn’t stopped him from going down to the wire once or twice — Guardians of the Galaxy reportedly had a handful of visual effects shots being completed just before the movie hit theaters — but a tight shoot and extremely limited reshoots add up to a lot of extra time to fine-tune the footage than many filmmakers have on tentpole blockbusters.

An assembly cut (as many DC fans will remember from years of talking about Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League) is often the first “complete” cut of the movie. It is simply what it sounds like: it takes the scenes from the movie and assembles them in order, so that the director can watch it back and get a sense for the movie’s pacing and how it plays as a narrative. Generally, these aren’t seen by anyone outside of the film’s production since they don’t have final music, visual effects, color correction, or editing…but it does mean there exists a version of the movie that plays from start to finish.

Superman stars David Corenswet as the title character, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Little is known about the story, other than that it will involve a version of Superman who is settled into his role as the world’s protector, but who also has a network of allies to fall back on. Superman will also star Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

Gunn is lining up some familiar talent on the project, with cinematographer Henry Braham (The Suicide SquadGuardians of the Galaxy vol. 3); production designer Beth Mickle (The Suicide SquadGuardians of the Galaxy vol. 3); costume designer Judianna Makovsky (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s StoneAvengers: Endgame); and art director David Scott (Godzilla: King of the MonstersSpider-Man: No Way Home). Casting is by Yellowstone and Oppenheimer‘s John Papsidera.

Superman flies into cinemas on July 11th, 2025.

Superman fans think they’ve discovered when James Gunn and DC Studios are set to release the trailer out into the world. On Threads, some hopeful sleuths think they’ve targeted the Superman trailer’s release to December at CCXP. While Gunn didn’t confirm anything on social media, his emoji isn’t an outright denial! In addition, people already know that his big DC movie feature has already wrapped filming and is in the process of editing and polishing right now. Things are already so far along on Superman that the director has this time to answer questions from fans on social media. So, they’ve been busy over there on the Warner Bros. Discovery lot.

So many modern blockbusters use reshoots to tweak and tuck their finished product. But, for Superman, Gunn thinks that this practice won’t have to happen. The director talked about the practice on Threads and said that he’s been doing a good job of keeping the trains running on time with almost every project coming out of his orbit. For his past two releases, Gunn argues that he’s only had a single day of additional photography. That would be a wild number to match moving forward. It really signifies taking your time with each and every idea that gets put to page. The filmmaker has to make sure it goes into the can the right way on the day they choose to film that scene. It sounds like Superman was following this edict down to the smallest moments.

David corenswet is superman!

“Over-prepare. Don’t start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with. Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs,” Gunn told the fans when the idea of reshoots came up. “Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir everything. Ask myself daily – are there any small imperfections in the script or what we’re shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together.”

Superman Taking All The Time It Needs Before Releasing That Trailer

james-gunn-superman-movie.jpg

One reason that the trailer might be surfacing later this year: to allow the VFX team time to get every shot to be as perfect as can be. Over the years, Gunn has amassed a reputation for being very judicious with the CGI and effects in his films. Superman is no different in that regard. In fact, when a fan asked him about the VFX for the Man of Steel’s debut in his new universe recently, he defended the practices they’re using on the upcoming movie. Gunn totally respects their craft and understands that they need time to bring these fantasies to life. If that means the trailer gets here a little bit later than expected, than so be it! Check out his thoughtful response to that question right here down below.

“If you do some research you’ll see my films have always taken a different approach and I’ve always given my VFX artist-collaborators time to do their jobs properly, and the respect they deserve,” Gunn wrote on Threads after the question was raised. “And the quality of the VFX in those films is uniformly great because of it (and because my friends at Weta and Framestore and ILM and more are amazingly talented).”

“This is why we wrapped on Superman a year before release and why they’ve been hard at work on many shots for months before that,” Gunn would add. “This is why we start heartily editing during the shoot. It’s why I prepare so vigorously and why we only shoot finished screenplays. And Supergirl, which I’m not directing, is being handled the same way. I can’t praise the VFX artists that help us create magic enough.”

David Corenswet bulked up to play Clark Kent in the upcoming movie Superman, but it wasn’t necessarily the best experience. The star, who put on a lot of weight and muscle, said in a recent podcast interview that he wasn’t totally comfortable with himself when he was so much bigger, and none of his clothes fit him. Eventually his body got used to the extra bulk (topping out at around 240 pound and wearing 2XL sweatshirts) and he settled in, but he admitted that despite praise from his trainer, the star “didn’t feel great” when he first transformed his body.

“I wasn’t 238 [pounds] when we started shooting. I was 238 at my max,” Corenswet told “Manly Things (Sort Of)” podcast (via Variety). “I didn’t fit into any of my pants.” He later added that point was “at the peak of my bulk, and then I slowly lost weight before we started shooting. I started shooting at about 228, 230…I know I wanted this to be my excuse to see what it felt like to gain essentially as much weight as I could.”

Even then, the suit doesn’t show off his bulk as much as Henry Cavill’s did, leading many fans online to think Corsenswet had not bulked up that much. Of course, that’s just the nature of the internet — everyone is going to criticize any actor’s superhero physique until you see it in action.

Superman stars David Corenswet as the title character, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Several months after having wrapped production, James Gunn’s Superman reboot is adding a familiar new player. On Thursday, reports confirmed that Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Rogue One: A Star Wats Story) has joined the cast of Superman in a mystery role. Tudyk is already a member of the ensemble of Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe of movies and television shows, as he is already set to portray Batman villain Doctor Phosphorus in the upcoming Max animated series Creature Commandos.

It is unclear at this point if Tudyk is reprising his role as Doctor Phosphorus, or has been cast in Superman in an entirely new role. Given the fact that principal photography on Superman has already wrapped and Gunn has previously teased that the film will not need reshoots, there is a chance that Tudyk’s new role could involve voicing a computer-generated character. Based on the existing Superman mythos, fans have already speculated that Superman’s canine sidekick Krypto or robot assistant Kelex could factor into the film in some capacity. Either way, this would be the latest in a long line of DC roles for Tudyk, as he voices Clayface and The Joker in the Harley Quinn animated series, portrayed Mr. Nobody in Doom Patrol, and appeared as Van Wayne in the short-lived NBC sitcom Powerless.

Who Is Alan Tudyk Playing in Creature Commandos?

Created by Steve Englehart and Walt Simonson in 1977’s Detective Comics #469, Alexander James Sartorius was transformed into Doctor Phosphorus after a meltdown at a nuclear power plant. Left with irradiated and transparent skin, Doctor Phosphorus sporadically appeared in the comics in ensuing years, namely as an antagonist of Batman.

“He kind of looks like a Ghost Rider,” Tudyk previously said of his character. “He’s a skeleton on fire. He’s a DC character. He was a doctor. [Laughs] That’s why they call him doctor. He was an obstetrician. No, he wasn’t. He was… I don’t know what the comics say, so I don’t wanna say what his origin story is because it is covered in the series, the animated series.”

What Is James Gunn’s Superman About?

Per DC Studios, Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman will star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

After years of delighting DC fans, Rex Mason / Metamorpho is finally headed to the big screen next year, portrayed by Anthony Carrigan in James Gunn’s Superman movie, and it looks like he is getting a new comic to celebrate. On Friday, DC announced a new Metamorpho ongoing series, which will be written by Al Ewing with art by Steve Lieber, colors by Lee Loughridge and lettering Ferran Delgado. Part of DC’s new All-In initiative, Metamorpho: The Element Man will kick off on Christmas Day, December 25th. The first issue will feature a main cover from Lieber with variant covers from Erica Henderson, Ian Bertram and Steve Beach.

“This is 100% fun comics, delivered with total confidence, visceral joy and absolutely no winking to the camera,” Ewing said in a statement. “It’s a love letter to Bob Haney, Ramona Fradon and the spirit of superheroes at their wildest and weirdest—we’re aiming to catch the essential fab-freakiness of Metamorpho like lightning in a bottle and get groovy with it in our own special way.”

What Is Metamorpho: The Element Man About?

In Metamorpho: The Element Man, to know him is to love him. He’s the one and only Rex Mason, alias Metamorpho… but can even he win out against Cy.C.L.O.P.S., the hairy eyeball of crime that gazes from the top of the pop charts to the lowest depths of evil—and even into the far-off, far-out Ra-Realm? To find out, the Element Man must survive a hand-picked assassin who can match him change for change… and that’s just the first issue!

“This is our take on classic DC comics,” continued Ewing. “Done-in-ones that’ll satisfy discerning Metamaniacs month by month as they build up to something so far out that it might just be a one-way ticket to nowheresville for a certain freak of a thousand changes! Who is the menacing Mister 3? What’s the sinister secret of Sugar Sweet? Who’s the target of Vandal Savage’s million-year revenge? All these way-out mysteries and more will be answered in the New Age of Metamorpho—it’s our Xmas gift to you!”

As mentioned above, Metamorpho: The Element Man #1 will be released wherever comics are sold on Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25th. Keep scrolling to check out a first look at the series.

If ya really wanna taste of Peacemaker season 2, you’ll have to wait for James Gunn’s Superman. After confirming that the second season of The Suicide Squad spinoff series will be grandfathered into the DC Universe canon — which will kick off with the Max animated series Creature Commandos in December, before Superman officially launches the new DCU — the DC Studios co-chief revealed that John Cena’s chrome-helmeted anti-hero won’t return until after the Man of Steel reboot takes flight in July 2025.

Season 2 of Peacemaker will air in “2025 after Superman,” Gunn announced on Threads. The new season “follows the events” of the first DC Studios film, which tells the story of a younger Kal-El (Twisters‘ David Corenswet, taking over from Henry Cavill) and “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonianheritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,” according to the official synopsis

Plot details remain locked away in Belle Reve, but announced cast members include the return of Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, daughter of Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller; Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase / Vigilante; Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee as A.R.G.U.S. Agents Emilia Harcourt and John Economos; and new cast members Sol Rodríguez (Star Trek: Picard), Tim Meadows (Saturday Night Live), and David Denman (Brightburn), with Frank Grillo reprising his role from Creature Commandos and Superman as Rick Flag Sr.

In July, Gunn announced the DCU order is as follows: Creature Commandos (December 2024), Superman (July 2025), and Peacemaker season 2 (TBA 2025). “All of these initial projects are happening in the order they’re released,” Gunn said of the DC Studios slate, which includes the undated Max series Waller, HBO’s Green Lantern series, the comedy series Booster Gold, the Game of Thrones-inspired Wonder Woman spinoff Paradise Lost, andthe upcoming feature films Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (dated for June 26th, 2026), The Authority, Batman reboot The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and Teen Titans.

“Nothing is ‘in production’ unless it’s been greenlit. Right nowthat’s Superman, Supergirl, Penguin, Peacemaker, Lanterns, and a handfulof animated projects,” Gunn shared on Threads, adding that announced and unannounced projects will only go into production “once we have a script or scripts we think are great and readyto shoot, never before.”

Peacemaker season 1 is streaming now on Max (formerly HBO Max).

Creature Commandos is set within the newly-rebooted DC Universe, but the adult animated series is an appetizer for the main course: James Gunn’s Superman movie. The DC Studios co-head has described the Viola Davis and Frank Grillo-voiced series (premiering Dec. 5th on Max) as an “aperitif” for the interconnected DCU, which officially launches when David Corenswet’s Man of Steel arrives in theaters in July 2025. An example of that connective tissue: Grillo will reprise his animated Creature Commandos role as Rick Flag Sr. in the live-action Superman and Peacemaker season 2

Supermanis the true start of everything, it’s a humongous epic,” the DC Studios co-head told Entertainment Weekly, adding Creature Commandos is “a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like.” Written and executive produced by Gunn, the seven-episode Max Original series has “a ton of references to other DC stuff, a bunch of hints for things that are coming,” the filmmaker teased. “So I think it’s just an extraordinarily fun way to start.”

creature-commandos-frank-grillo-rick-flag-sr.jpg
Frank Grillo voices Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, a role he’ll reprise in live-action in 2025’s Superman.

While Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1 took place in the continuity of the DC Extended Universe (where Henry Cavill starred as Superman),  portions of that canon will carry over into the DCU. As for how characters like Peacemaker (John Cena) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) can exist in both universes, Gunn wrote on Threads: “I have a way in. It won’t be confusing.”

“What we’re doing with the DCU is we’re having animation tied directlyinto live action. Television, movies and games all intertwine within thesame universe,” Gunn said when announcing the first chapter of the new DC Universe in 2023. In addition to Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. showing up in Superman and Peacemaker,Gunn has teased that one of the main characters in Creature Commandos will cross over into the live-action Max series Waller.

Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missionsdeemed too dangerous for humans. Along with Grillo’s Flag and Davis’ Waller, the voice cast includes Steve Agee (Peacemaker) as John Economos, Maria Bakalova (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra (The Witcher)as Circe, Zoe Chao (The Afterparty) as Nina Mazursky, SeanGunn (The Suicide Squad) as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Frankenstein, AlanTudyk (Resident Alien) as Dr. Phosphorus, and Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) as The Bride. Creature Commandos begins streaming Dec. 5th on Max; Superman opens in theaters July 11th, 2025.

As one comic book chapter closes, another opens for James Gunn. The mastermind behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was appointed as head of the newly-launched DC Studios in Fall 2022, effectively slotting into the role that Kevin Feige has at Marvel Studios but on the other side of the fence. Gunn spent the subsequent two years mapping out his vision for the DC Universe, one that scraps the vast majority of the DC Extended Universe and instead revolves around a new-look character cast. DC Studios is set to take its first steps in December with animated series Creature Commandos on Max and will officially launch next July with David Corenswet’s Superman.

James Gunn Reveals Key Difference Between DC and Marvel

jamesgunn-petersafran-dcstudios.png

The DC Universe is hitting the ground running, but don’t expect its journey to be one constant palette.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, head of DC Studios James Gunn championed his cinematic universe’s source material, noting he wants to carry the unique flavors of DC Comics’ pages to the big screen.

“The thing I’ve always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that always ran, but they also had these tonally different comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and All-Star Superman,” Gunn said. “It was different from Marvel in that way.”

Marvel Studios found unprecedented success throughout its first 11-year saga of films, one that largely followed the “Marvel formula.” While different directors entered the fold and integrated their trademark styles into their projects, like Gunn’s comedy in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and Ryan Coogler’s dramatic dialogue in the Black Panther films, all of Marvel’s Infinity Saga projects retained the same visual style.

Gunn indicates that his DC Universe, while one large cohesive franchise, will allow each of its installments to have its own visual identity.

“That’s something that I really want to retain within the studio,” Gunn continued. “That every project is going to bring a different vision by the artists who are creating it.”

The DC Universe’s prologue in the form of Creature Commandos, an animated adventure set during World War II, arrives on Max on December 5th. The live-action side and mainline story of the rebooted franchise’s “Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters” saga sets for the skies when Superman hits theaters on July 11th, 2025.

It’s been more than a decade since Laurence Fishburne played Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, but it’s a role that the actor looks back fondly — especially for how it changed perception of Perry White. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter (via Screen Rant), Fishburne reflected on the film, calling it “a wonderful movie” and then noted the legacy it’s left of the character Perry White being portrayed by Black actors, when the character was originally envisioned as white in the comics.

“That was beautiful,” Fishburne said. “Man of Steel is a wonderful movie. If I’ve been influential in any way in terms of that whole nontraditional casting thing, I love it. That’s great.”

Fishburne brought Perry White to life on the big screen in both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and made a major mark on the character. In 2013, Fishburne said that he modeled his take on the character on late CBS correspondent Ed Bradley. While Fishburne is not reprising the role for James Gunn’s DC Universe film Superman, another Black actor is stepping into the newsman’s shoes — Suits alum Wendell Pierce.

“I’m looking forward to this,” Pierce said earlier this year. “I never grew up reading comics, so I relied on my friends to tell me about it. I’m excited about this, you know.”

Fishburne Is Currently Starring in Slingshot

While Fishburne’s days as Perry White are behind him, the actor is currently starring in the film Slingshot with Casey Affleck. The film opened in theaters on August 30th. Fishburne recently spoke with ComicBook about what appealed to him about the movie, revealing that he wasn’t inspired by his Event Horizon character, but by the mystery of Slingshot.

“Not so much, because that was a very long time ago,” Fishburne said. “But this one for me the appeal was I the mystery of it the sort of unknown quality of it with his mission that these men are on to slingshot around a planet to pick up more gravity so they could travel further out into space and whether or not any of that is going to work.”

“Casey Affleck’s character being among a number of people who are vying to get a position on the ship, to get a seat on the ship. Because it goes back and forth between this process of being vetted for the mission, and then of course the reveal at the end,” he continued. “Which I just thought was really fabulous and amazing. Something so surprising comes out of it. I was really satisfied with the way we pulled it off.”

What Do We know About James Gunn’s Superman?

Per DC Studios, Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

In addition to Pierce as Perry White, Superman will also star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho.

DC Studios head James Gunn has confirmed that Batman and Superman team-up film in the new DC Universe could (and should) have the iconic title of “World’s Finest.” Gunn posted a Labor Day photo on his Instagram, depicting Batman, Superman, and Robin, engaged in a game of baseball; the caption of the photo read “Have the World’s Finest Labor Day!”

As per usual, a simple post from Gunn quickly became a discussion of the future of the DCU franchise. One commenter (Benjasp_5) seemed to toss a grenade into the discussion, but asking the hot-button question: “Hi Mr Gunn, in the hypothetical case that a movie starring only Superman and Batman (teaming) came out, what would you call it? Superman and Batman or Batman and Superman?😉🧜‍♂️

Gunn caught that grenade and quickly stuck a pin in it, by avoiding any kind of ranking or ordering between the two superhero names. In other words, the DCU Batman and Superman team-up film would be called “World’s Finest.

What Is DC’s World’s Finest?

batman-superman-worlds-finest.jpg

The term “World’s Finest” became associated with Batman and Superman when DC first published a comic book starring the two heroes under that title, back in 1941. “World’s Finest Comics” became the official title in issue #2, after the series launched under the name “World’s Best Comics”; the comic was originally launched as a super-sized quarterly anthology, and centered on stories featuring Batman and Superman together – often with Batman’s sidekick Robin in the early issues – as well as other DC heroes. In the 1950s the series was shortened to a regular series starring Batman and Superman – which became the framework most DC fans are now famliair with.

Will There Be A DCU World’s Finest Movie?

batman-superman-worlds-finest-dcu-movie-title-james-gunn.jpg

Another DC fan did follow up with Gunn’s statement about the World’s Finest title by asking if the project was a confirmed part of the DCU slate. Gunn did not respond to that post – but it seems inevitable that the DCU will launch that film, at some point. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is often criticized for making Batman and Superman’s first live-action onscreen pairing into a dark and violent confrontation. Many fans already feel like the DCU needs to pave over that rocky road with a World’s Finest movie that brings Batman and Superman (and Robin?) together in the classic way.

Provided Gunn does great things with his Superman (2025) reboot, and the Batman reboot The Brave and the Bold also hits the mark, World’s Finest would suddenly be one of the biggest cinematic events there is.

Superman (2025) has a release date of July 12, 2025.

Production continues on Peacemaker season 2 and a fresh look at John Cena’s new gear has arrived from a surprise set photo. James Gunn, DC Studios CO-CEO and creator of the Peacemaker TV Series, today continued his trend of paying tribute to the origins of the big screen characters in the pages of comics. Today marked the anniversary of the first appearance of Peacemaker, who made hits debut in Fightin’ 5 #40. Gunn took to social media to pay tribute to the character’s debut issue and to hype up the next season of the TV series with a tease of a new helmet for Cena’s Peacemaker.

“On this day, #Peacemaker aka Christopher Smith made his first comic appearance in Fightin’ 5 #40, in 1966, created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette,” Gunn wrote. “It’s the role @JohnCena was born to play, and I can’t wait to show you all what we’re cooking up now for @Peacemaker Season 2!”

Peacemaker season 2 photo via James Gunn

Fightin’ 5, where Peacemaker made his comic book debut, was originally published by Charlton Comics. When the longtime publisher eventually faded away in the 1980s, many of its characters (including Peacemaker) were purchased by DC Comics. That deal also included Captain Atom, Judo Master, The Question, and Blue Beetle; characters that would go on to become major pillars of DC’s publishing in the decades that followed. So far only one of those other characters has appeared in the Peacemaker TV series, with Nhut Le playing Judomaster in season 1, but the Jaime Reyes incarnation of Blue Beetle did star in his own solo movie (which included a tease of Charlton’s Ted Kord).

Peacemaker season 2 actually started filming as James Gunn’s Superman movie was already in the middle of production. Gunn confirmed that this meant he would not be directing the majority of the second batch of episodes, but did confirm that he would still direct “some” of Peacemaker season 2’s episodes. Additional episodes in Peacemaker season 2 will be directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad) and Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist).

Peacemaker season 2 has not yet confirmed and plot details about what DC fans can expect, but we do know that. John Cena will return once again as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker, with Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase / Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo. In a surprise move, Robert Patrick seemingly revealed he would return as Christopher Smith’s father Auggie in the new episodes. In addition, one director appeared to confirm that Joel Kinnaman will reprise his Rick Flag role in Season 2. Fans will no doubt remember that Peacemaker actually killed Rick Flag during the events of The Suicide Squad

The new season of Peacemaker will introduce some new cast members including Sol Rodríguez as Sasha BordeauxTim Meadows as Langston Fleury, and David Denman in a currently-unknown role.  In a major peace of connectivity to James Gunn’s larger DCU, Peacemaker season 2 will include reprising his role as Rick Flag, Sr. from the upcoming Creature Commandos animated show.

We’re officially less than a year out from the debut of James Gunn’s Superman movie, which is expected to kick off his and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe in a big fashion. There remain a lot of questions surrounding Superman, especially after production on the project wrapped earlier this summer, but one of the more eccentric theories in recent memory may have been put to rest. On Threads, while debunking a report from Puck News claiming that a video game is in development based on Matt Reeves’ The Batman saga, Gunn also addressed a new rumor that has surfaced online about Superman. In particular, it suggests that Chumbawamba’s 1997 hit “Tubthumping” could be heard playing on the set of Superman, a tactic Gunn often utilizes for the songs that are part of his soundtracks. While Gunn technically did not outright confirm that “Tubthumping” is not a part of Superman‘s soundtrack, he did clarify that the song definitely was not played on set.

“There is also no truth to Tubthumping by Chumbawamba being played on the set of Superman (this is a real rumor on Reddit someone just sent me!),” Gunn’s comment reads.

What Is James Gunn’s Next Movie After Superman?

A sequel to Superman has not been confirmed by DC Studios, but there are a number of film projects already announced for the DCU slate, including 2026’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and the currently undated The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, and Swamp Thing. Last month, Gunn revealed on Threads that he knows which film project he is writing next for the DCU, but is not able to prioritize it at the moment.

“It’s just a distant corner of my brain as I’m focused on what we’re shooting,” Gunn wrote.

Superman will be released exclusively in theaters on July 11, 2025.

The Twisters cast threw a celebration when they found out their co-star David Corenswet will be playing Superman on the big screen. Twisters was an instant hit at the box office, even surpassing its 1996 predecessor, Twister. One of the movie’s stars, David Corenswet, made news earlier this year when DC Studios and James Gunn announced him as the next actor to suit up as the Man of Steel in next year’s Superman. While fans were excited to finally have their Superman, this excitement was also shared by the cast and crew of Twisters.

Twisters star Brandon Perea shared some behind-the-scenes videos from the set on social media, with one of the videos featuring the cast’s reaction to David Corenswet’s Superman announcement. Glen Powell and Sasha Lane are just some of the people you can see jumping up and down and screaming. “Brandon, congrats!! That’s our Superman, baby!!” Perea screams. You can tell everyone involved in Twisters is happy for Corenswet, since Superman is one of the more coveted roles in Hollywood, especially with the relaunch of the DC Universe under filmmaker James Gunn. You can watch the video below in the fifth slide of Perea’s post.

Superman wraps filming

The end of July came the confirmation that James Gunn’s Superman had wrapped filming. The film is the inaugural film entry in Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios and stars David Corenswet in the titular role of Clark Kent / Superman. Corenswet also commemorated the end of production with a post on social media.

The video consists solely of him looking at the character and eating a piece of chocolate cake, seemingly as a celebration of him not needing to maintain his superhero physique in the immediate future.

What is Superman about?

Per DC Studios, Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman will also star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

What is Twisters about?

Twisters follows Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Twisters also stars Brandon Perea (Nope), Sasha Lane (American Honey), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Nik Dodani (Atypical), David Corenswet (Superman), Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), and Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy).

Twisters is now playing in theaters and will return to 4DX on August 30th.

Meet Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen. 86 years after the character’s first appearance, James Gunn — who wrote and directed the just-wrapped Superman reboot for DC Studios — commemorated the anniversary with the first official look at actor Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as the freckle-faced Daily Planet photographer who pals around with Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

“Happy Anniversary to Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen, who debuted on this day in 1941 (although he did appear earlier as ‘office boy’ in Action Comics 6),” Gunn wrote on X with an on-set photo of Gisondo giving the thumbs up.  “Created by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and Bob Maxwell. I can’t wait for you to see @skylergisondo’s portrayal in Superman on July 11, 2025.” See the just-released photo and Gunn’s social media post below.

superman-2025-skyler-gisondo-jimmy-olsen.jpg

While the unnamed, bow tie-clad office boy who appeared in the pages of 1938’s Action Comics #6 would later be identified as Jimmy, DC Comics recognizes Superman #13 — published in August 1941 — as Jimmy Olsen’s official first appearance. By issue #15, the office boy and aspiring Daily Planet reporter took his surname from the Jackie Kelk-voiced Jimmy Olsen on The Adventures of Superman radio serial.

The first film in the new DC Universe “tells the story of Superman’sjourney to reconcile his Kryptonianheritage with his human upbringingas Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided byhuman kindness in a world thatsees kindness as old-fashioned,” according to the synopsis.

Superman stars David Corenswet (Twisters) in the title role opposite Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as editor-in-chief Perry White, and Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Metropolis industrialist Lex Luthor. The ensemble includes Beck Bennett (Saturday Night Live) and Mikaela Hoover (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Jimmy’s Daily Planet colleagues Steve Lombard and Cat Grant, María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer of The Authority, Frank Grillo (Creature Commandos) as Rick Flagg Sr., and Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind) as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus) as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion (The Suicide Squad) as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern.

Gisondo, who previously appeared as Gwen Stacy’s younger brother in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is the latest actor to play Superman’s sidekick.

On television, Jack Larson starred opposite George Reeves’ Man of Steel on Adventures of Superman, Aaron Ashmore on Smallville, Mehcad Brooks on Supergirl, and David Kaufman on Superman: The Animated Series. Marc McClure appeared as Jimmy in all four Christopher Reeve-starring Superman movies between 1978 and 1987; most recently, Jimmy was played by Sam Huntington in 2006’s Superman Returns and by Michael Cassidy in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

DC Studios’ Superman soars into theaters July 11th, 2025.

From next year’s Superman movie and beyond, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe has a lot for the world to look forward to. Fans have been particularly curious to see Gunn’s take on the mythos, especially after his beloved work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. At the moment, Sean Gunn is the only main Guardians cast member to be confirmed to join the DCU, portraying the roles of Maxwell Lord, Weasel, and G.I. Robot. In a recent post on Threads, Gunn was asked to reveal what characters he would cast his other former Guardians of the Galaxy collaborators as in the DCU — and explained why he can’t exactly answer that question.

“Well that would be a spoiler wouldn’t it?” Gunn answered.

dc-universe-james-gunn-guardians-of-the-galaxy-cast.png

Will the Guardians of the Galaxy Cast Join the DCU?

Ever since Gunn was first appointed to his DC Studios role, fans have begun to campaign for certain DC roles for members of the Guardians cast, ranging from Peter Quill / Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt as Booster Gold, to Drax actor Dave Bautista as Bane or Hugo Strange. While speaking to ComicBook earlier this year about his work on The Garfield Movie, Pratt argued that either option is equally likely, and that he could very well end up appearing in both superhero sagas.

“Well, it probably make more sense that I would be Star Lord again,” Pratt said in our interview, which you can check out above. “But anything is possible, and especially with James over at DC. Maybe there’s something that would be right over there. Maybe both. How about both? Let’s do both. I think it’s 100% both.”

What Is On the DC Universe Slate?

As Gunn and Safran revealed back in January of 2023, the initial DC Studios slate will include 2025’s Superman, 2026’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and currently-undated movies The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. It will also include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series. Reports have indicated that a live-action Teen Titans movie and an animated Jurassic League movie are in the works at DC Studios, although neither have been publicly confirmed.

“A lot of people think it’s going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences,” Gunn explained in 2023. “We are telling a big, huge, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we’re a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we’ve gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we’re also creating a universe that is like Star Wars, where there’s different times, different places, different things, or Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex.”

In recent years, the work crunch visual effects workers have faced amid a growing slate of superhero films has been a main topic of discourse in film circles online. Oftentimes, various VFX vendors have found themselves rushed given the new norm of reshoots, resulting in less-than-average results. When it comes to DC Studios, James Gunn says visual effects partners won’t have to worry about crunching to the finish line.

“If you do some research you’ll see my films have always taken a different approach and I’ve always given my VFX artist-collaborators time to do their jobs properly, and the respect they deserve,” Gunn said on Threads over the weekend. “And the quality of the VFX in those films is uniformly great because of it (and because my friends at Weta and Framestore and ILM and more are amazingly talented).”

Gunn has been known for the great care taken in developing his films, personally sketching out each and every shot seen in the film.

“This is why we wrapped on Superman a year before release and why they’ve been hard at work on many shots for months before that,” Gunn added. “This is why we start heartily editing during the shoot. It’s why I prepare so vigorously and why we only shoot finished screenplays. And Supergirl, which I’m not directing, is being handled the same way. I can’t praise the VFX artists that help us create magic enough.”

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

The DC Universe officially kicks off with Creature Commandos, which is set to hit Max this December, and Superman: Legacy, which enters theaters July 11, 2025.

We’re officially less than a year away from Superman, James Gunn’s ambitious take on a brand new DC Universe. As the film’s production commenced across the past few months, a number of set photos leaked online showing brief glimpses of what the project has in store — including the official superhero costumes for Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Guy Gardner / Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion). In a recent interview with Deadline, Merced teased her “badass” super-suit and helmet for Hawkgirl, confirming fans’ theories that there will be a very specific narrative reason for the costumes in the world of the movie.

“Well, there have been some leaked pictures online,” Merced explained. “However, I think James knows what he wants, and this specific suit is for this specific timeline in the story. I don’t know what else I can say, but I gotta say, the helmet was my absolute favorite. It’s so sick. It’s so badass. It’s perfect.”

Who Is DC’s Hawkgirl?

DC has had multiple iterations of Hawkgirl, who first made her debut alongside Hawkman in the pages of Flash Comics #1. One iteration is Shiera Sanders Hall, the reincarnation of the Egyptian princess Chay-Ara, and the partner of Hawkman. In the Silver Age, the pair’s canon was retconned into being cosmic police officers from the planet Thanagar, with Shiera now being known as Shayera Hol. Shayera later changed her superhero moniker to Hawkwoman in the 1980s, a name she has held in the years since.

The modern-day version of Hawkgirl is Kendra Saunders, who was created by James Robinson, David Goyer, and Scott Benefiel in JSA: Secret Files #1. Kendra was a a young Hispanic woman who became possessed by Shiera Hall after committing suicide, and who went on to reluctantly embrace her destiny as Hawkgirl, and still holds the mantle to this day. This will be the second time Hawkgirl is portrayed in live-action, after Ciara Renée played Kendra across The CW’s Arrowverse of shows.

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is about to be in full swing, with the first cinematic entry hitting the big screen next summer with Superman. The larger franchise has already confirmed the casting of a number of surprising roles, including Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn as the businessman Maxwell Lord. While Gunn’s take on Maxwell Lord is not confirmed to appear in Superman, set photos from the production hint at his company, Lord Tech, having a pivotal role in the superhero community. In a recent interview with The Wrap, Gunn teased that when we do meet his take on Lord, it will be rooted in the comics in a distinct way.

“I can’t talk too much about it,” Gunn revealed. “I can say that my my brother James and I did discuss… what reference materials from the canon were relevant to to my process. I love doing my own music.”

“I can’t say that much, other than we did talk about about relevant materials, and we discussed the character in detail on before I dove in,” Gunn continued. “We referenced no live performances of the character. It’s all from written materials with things that we figure we’re looking at.”

Who Is DC’s Maxwell Lord?

Created by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire in 1987’s Justice League #1, Maxwell Lord IV is originally introduced as the secret benefactor of the Justice League International roster, who hopes to reimagine the superhero team on a global scale. Unbeknownst to the team, Lord was being mentally manipulated by an alien computer program, eventually breaking free and establishing himself as more of a shady businessman.

Lord later made a heel turn into being a supervillain by the events of Infinite Crisis, which revealed that he had been secretly stealing intel on the entire superhero community to use against them. The event began with him brutally murdering Ted Kord, and ended with Lord’s neck being snapped by Wonder Woman, and the footage being broadcast throughout the world. He eventually was resurrected, and has continued to be both an adversary and a suspicious ally of the DC Universe. He was previously portrayed in live action by Peter Facinelli in The CW’s Supergirl, and Pedro Pascal in the film Wonder Woman 1984.

The DC Universe Slate

The first chapter of DC Studios’ DC Universe slate will include 2025’s Superman, 2026’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, as well as the currently-undated movies The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. On the television side, the DC Universe will launch an animated Creature Commandos seriesthe sophomore season of Peacemaker, as well as future shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, and Paradise LostAn animated Jurassic League movie and a live-action Teen Titans movie are also reported to be in the works, but neither have been officially confirmed by DC Studios.

Once thought taboo, reshoots have become the norm when it comes to superhero cinema. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige even once said additional photography was paramount to the success of the studio’s films, making sure their productions filmed whatever story beats necessary. When it comes to the DC Universe, on the other hand, the franchise’s first film doesn’t appear to be setting up for any reshoots.

During a Q&A session on Threads, Superman helmer James Gunn seemingly suggested Superman won’t have any reshoots given he’s only had a single day of additional photography throughout his past two releases. The filmmaker even detailed why he’s been fortunate enough to not have to go back for more filming.

“Over-prepare. Don’t start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with. Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs,” Gunn said on the social network. “Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir everything. Ask myself daily – are there any small imperfections in the script or what we’re shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together.”

Superman wrapped principal photography towards the end of July, pushing the film into post-production ahead of its release next summer.

The legacy of Superman: his nearly 90-year history in comic books. Ever since the car-smashing Man of Steel debuted in the pages of Action Comics #1 in 1938 — which ended with the prescient declaration that creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s superhero was “destined to reshape the destiny of a world” — the DC comics have inspired decades of radio serials, live-action and animated shows, television series, and films, including James Gunn’s Superman movie.

Whereas Zack Snyder drew from such seminal stories as John Byrne’s The Man of Steel and The Death of Superman for a high-octane take on the Kryptonian in the DC Extended Universe, the newly-rebooted DC Universe is influenced by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s altruistic All-Star Superman and Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s coming-of-age tale Superman For All Seasons.

Formerly titled Superman: Legacy, Gunn’s reboot is “very inspired by” All-Star Superman, according to the filmmaker and DC Studios co-chief, who has shared Superman‘s comic book influences on social media. And just in time for the new movie to fly into theaters on July 11th, 2025, DC will release The Superman Box Set: a four-graphic novel box set that collects “some of Superman’s greatest and most influential tales.”

the-superman-legacy-box-set.png

The set, which retails for $85 and is scheduled for release on June 24th, 2025, includes these softcover editions:

  • All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly, ranked as the number one Superman story by IGN
  • Superman for All Seasons by Batman: The Long Halloween team Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, a critically acclaimed standalone story stuctured thematically around the four seasons
  • Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?a tale of Superman’s last adventures by Watchmen writer Alan Moore and definitive Superman artist Curt Swan
  • Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, anear-future clash between old-guard and new-guard super heroes that wascalled “One of the best comic stories ever told” by the Washington Examiner

The publisher released a similar box set for the comics that inspired Matt Reeves’ 2022 movie The Batman, containing Batman: Year One, Batman: The Long Halloween, and Batman: Ego. Also available from DC is the recently reprinted new edition of the 12-issue Absolute All-Star Superman and the new deluxe hardcover edition of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Apparel and the first-to-market Superman movie merchandise is available for purchase and pre-order here.

Batman: Caped Crusader Review

Here’s what ComicBook critic Evan Valentine had to say in his 5-Star Review of Batman: Caped Crusader:

Batman: Caped Crusader is one of the best-animated takes on the Dark Knight. It’s a series that is sure to be held in wide regard for years to come and feels like an essential part of the Batman mythos. Whether you are looking for a spiritual successor to Batman The Animated Series or want a decidedly different take on Gotham’s heroes and villains, Caped Crusader is most assuredly worth your time. I’m hard-pressed to come up with any knocks against this latest Batman series and I believe Dark Knight fans will feel the same. The Dark Knight has finally returned.

Zack Snyder offered some comments on James Gunn’s new suit for Superman. The movie might not release until 2025, but fans have offered their take on the brighter vision for The Man of Steel. Snyder joined The Hollywood Handle to talk about Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead. But, when you have the Justice League filmmaker there, you probably have to ask about Superman. A lot of the initial discussion around James Gunn’s big unveiling of Clark Kent’s costume revolved around comparisons to Man of Steel. Well, the DCEU director wants to see all of this stuff in motion and with official footage before rendering a verdict. Snyder said, “I’m gonna say that: let’s see it in the movie. I’m interested to see how it works, you know, as a piece of storytelling. Yeah. But I am excited. I’m excited to see it.”

This isn’t the first time this director has been asked his thoughts about what James Gunn is building over at DC. CBR asked Snyder about the new direction for the studio and he’s as excited to see what James Gunn is building as the rest of the fans. “You know, I’m a pretty open book,” he told the outlet. “I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I’m down. I’m in. Let’s see what happens. I’m pretty excited… I mean, we’re going to get Superman pretty soon, so we’ll see what that’s like.”

Snyder Cut Is Headed To Theaters

zack-snyder-superman-james-gunn-suit.jpg
Zack Snyder and the new Superman.

For all of you that might be missing the Snyder era, there’s been some good news. Justice League: Justice Is Gray Edition is hitting theaters soon. So, you can finally see the director’s massive vision on the big screen. When hyping the project, Snyder talked to I Minutemen. about what sets this version of Justice League apart from even the Snyder Cut that premiered on Max a couple of years ago.

I’d like to shoot a black-and-white movie at some point. We’re finishing right now the black-and-white version of Justice League, and it’s called the Justice Is Gray Edition,” Snyder told the outlet. “That’s what I call it. Justice League: Justice Is Gray Edition. It’s not black-and-white as they say (laughs). But that’s the name of the black-and-white version.”

When it comes to the most celebrated version of the movie, Snyder aligns with the fan sentiment that the Justice Is Gray Edition is the platonic ideal of Justice League. “My ideal version of the movie is the black-and-white IMAX version of the movie. That, to me, is the most fan-centric, most pure, most Justice League experience,” Snyder previously said to The Film Junkee. “Because that’s how I lived with the movie for two years, in black-and-white.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is on the horizon, between the Creature Commandos animated series debuting in December, and Gunn’s Superman movie arriving next summer. The projects will be the first titles in a new DC Studios, and it sounds like we have new insight on what the franchise’s reach will be.

In recent comments on Threads, Gunn confirmed that he and Safran are “involved” with the merchandising for the DC Universe, and responded to a fan’s comment about being excited for Superman Funko Pop!s with “Me neither. Also the Creature Commando funkos which are maybe my favorite ever.”

james-gunn-dc-studios-merchandise-superman-creature-commandos.png

Who Are DC’s Creature Commandos?

The Creature Commandos are a crop of human-monster hybrids who carry out military actions for the government. The roster of the television adaptation will include Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), Dr. Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), and Weasel (Sean Gunn). The series will also star Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Steve Agee as John Economos.

Creature Commandos is based on the great team from DC,” Gunn explained when announcing the series. “What we’re doing with the DCU is, we are having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies, and games all intertwine within the same universe. We’re going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this as well as in other things, some of which we’ve already cast. I’ve written all seven episodes of the show, and it’s in production. So that’s the first thing, and I love it.”

Creature Commandos will be released exclusively on Max in November. Superman, meanwhile, will be released exclusively in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Over the past decade, the Guardians of the Galaxy have gone from obscure comic characters to bonafide household names, thanks in part to their trilogy of films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. On Thursday, August 1st, the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie will be celebrating ten years since it first debuted in theaters, and franchise director and writer James Gunn is addressing the occasion. On Wednesday, Gunn took to Instagram to celebrate Guardians of the Galaxy‘s milestone anniversary, as well as the fact that production on his upcoming Superman movie for DC Studios just wrapped production earlier this week.

“Yesterday Superman wrapped,” Gunn’s post reads. “And today is the ten year anniversary of Guardians of the Galaxy being released in theaters in Europe (we were on the road promoting and freaking out with joy as the reviews rolled in). What a great ten years it’s been. ❤

Will There Be a Guardians of the Galaxy 4?

After the culmination of Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 last year, fans have naturally begun to wonder if a fourth film could potentially be in the cards. It is safe to assume that Gunn will not be directing that project, especially with his new job co-running DC Studios, but he has said for years that he did not have plans to return for a fourth film.

“I absolutely never said I wouldn’t do a Vol 2,” Gunn told a fan in a 2020 Q&A. “As I planned to do a trilogy from the beginning if the first one worked. I have no plans to do a 4th.”

What Is James Gunn’s Next Movie?

The DC Universe hit a major milestone on Tuesday, with the confirmation that James Gunn’s Superman movie has officially wrapped production. The film, which is the inaugural film entry in Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios, will star David Corenswet in the titular role of Clark Kent / Superman — and it looks like he is commemorating the occasion in a unique way.

On Tuesday night, Corenswet took to social media to share a video of him celebrating the fact that Superman has wrapped production. The video consists solely of him looking at the character and eating a piece of chocolate cake, seemingly as a celebration of him not needing to maintain his superhero physique in the immediate future.

“A lot of people think it’s going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences,” Gunn explained in January of 2023.

Led by David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Superman will serve as the first cinematic entry in Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. Gunn announced the news with a photo from the film’s Norway set featuring himself, Safran, Corenswet, and more of the film’s cast and crew.

“And that’s a wrap,” Gunn’s post reads. “God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set – and for that I am forever grateful. ❤ (Photo from our first week of shooting in Svalbard Norway.)”

Superman merchandise is flying off shelves. The first official movie-based items — including T-shirts, hats, pins, and a limited-edition foil cover version of DC Comics’ All-Star Superman #1 bearing James Gunn’s Superman logo — were offered for sale at the DC booth at San Diego Comic-Con, along with collectibles inspired by DC Studios’ upcoming Creature Commandos. For fans at home, Warner Bros. Discovery debuted merchandise designed exclusively for the online DC Shop featuring the Superman S-shield as it appears in the 2025 movie — which also sold out faster than a speeding bullet.

While the DC Shop’s Superman movie apparel is currently sold out, fans can enter their email on the official website to be notified when the items are back in stock. A basic shirt is currently available here at Hot Topic

The movie, which will release in theaters in July 2025, tells the story of Kal-El’s “journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his humanupbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,” according to the official synopsis. “He is the embodiment oftruth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in aworld that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

David Corenswet (Twisters) is playing the younger Man of Steel, leading a cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult (the X-Men movies) as Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Authority’s Angela Spica/the Engineer.

Set in the new DC Universe, Superman also stars Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Neva Howell and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Ma and Pa Kent, Terence Rosemore and Sara Sampaio as Luthor toadies Otis and Eve Teschmacher, and features a superhero ensemble that includes Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), the Guy Gardner Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan).

Gunn appeared virtually at SDCC to debut the new DC Studios logo and the first Creature Commandos trailer, but it’s “too soon” to show anything from the still-shooting Superman, according to producer and DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran.

“A year is truthfully a long time for a campaign and so, from ourperspective, I think we go stronger and harder over a shorter period, rather than stretching it out,” Safran said in a recent interview. “That’s our instinct on that.”

On Wednesday morning, Fayetteville Police Department responded to a report of an unconscious crew member at Trilith Studios, a large studio complex that is currently hosting production of both Superman and Peacemaker 2. According to reports, officers and medical personnel found the person deceased from an apparent self-inflected gunshot wound. Per Deadline, the person was a Teamster working on the set of Superman, although their identity has not been publicly released by authorities.

“Evidence collected revealed no suspicion of foul play, nor is the investigation connected to any ongoing studio projects,” Captain Austin Dunn of the Fayetteville Police Department said in a statement. “Additional details are unavailable at this time as the investigation is in its infancy. Future updates will be provided when appropriate.”

Variety reported that director James Gunn informed the crew of Superman to inform them of the person’s death and then called production for the day. Superman is currently in its last week of filming and is set for release in 2025. Filming for the movie resumed on Thursday. Superman stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult.

Trilith Studios is a large 700-acre site located outside of Atlanta, with over 30 soundstages. The studio was used in the filming of multiple Marvel productions, including Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, and Loki.

Other filming locations used for Superman include Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Norway. Cleveland was notably the birthplace of Superman (both Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster are from Cleveland and began their work on Superman there), while Cincinnati’s Union Terminal was the inspiration for the Hall of Justice. Union Terminal was one of the filming locations for Superman.

DC isn’t skipping San Diego Comic Con this year, but James Gunn’s Superman is. Why? Well, because they don’t want to spend 12 months promoting the movie and wearing out its welcome. That’s according to Gunn’s partner, Peter Safran, who talked with TheWrap about the first movie to come out of the new DC Universe. Since SDCC will take place from July 23rd through 27th next year, it does mean the DC team will lose their chance to promote the movie at Comic Con — but it’s likely that if the movie is a success, they’ll still be celebrating it two weeks later anyway.

The movies side of DC won’t be presenting at San Diego Comic Con, even as DC the comics publisher has a bunch of huge news tied to their new DC All In initiative. Gunn’s Creature Commandos, an animated series that serves as the first official launch of the new DC Universe onscreen, is represented as well.

“From my perspective, it’s just too soon,” Safran told TheWrap. “A year is truthfully a long time for a campaign and so, from our perspective, I think we go stronger and harder over a shorter period, rather than stretching it out. That’s our instinct on that.”

He also noted that while Superman is very close to completion, Gunn hasn’t finished actually shooting the movie yet. Obviously, there could be teaser footage if that’s where the studio’s instincts were, but that isn’t something Gunn has ever seemed especially enthusiastic about in the past.

“James hasn’t wrapped yet. I think when you put your first foot forward, for us, for our first theatrical live-action experience, there’s a lot of expectation on that,” Safran explained. “And we really have to make sure we deliver every step of the way, but certainly with the first time out. So that’s why we opted not to be there.”

Superman‘s Nicholas Hoult has wrapped filming on the project according to James Gunn’s latest Instagram post. On Threads, the DC Studios head thanked Hoult for his fun wrap gift. Apparently, he dropped Gunn a copy of Superman #167. The cover is delightful retro DC zaniness with Superman trapped in a cage by Braniac and Lex Luthor together. Apparently, the villains worked together with his arch-nemesis taking away The Man of Steel’s powers and then Brainiac finishing it off by shrining him. (As a sidebar, there are so many of those old Superman covers with this exact kind of fever dream energy. It’s worth scrolling and seeing what you can find honestly.) But, yeah, Hoult has taken his bald head and kicked off to parts unknown.

Now, Gunn did have to specify that this didn’t mean that Superman was completely done filming. He wrote, “Thanks to Nicholas Hoult for this incredible wrap gift! No we’re not done filming – only Nick is.” The DC head man was so happy to get the actor into this role. He previously posted about Lex’s place in the larger universe.

“Yes, finally I can answer, @nicholashoult is Lex Luthor in #SupermanLegacy and I couldn’t be happier,” Gunn wrote on social media. “We went out to dinner last night to celebrate and discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget. “But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?” Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain. Anyway, here’s to Lex (and Nicholas!), one of my very favorite characters in the DCU.”

What Lies Ahead For DC Studios?

James Gunn has the master plan.

With San Diego Comic-Con almost here, some fans are holding out hope for a big DC Studios surprise. While James Gunn’s Superman might not be showing off their progress at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, hope springs anew. There are so many different projects that Gunn has teased for this universe when that first slate got announced. Season 2 of Peacemaker is coming, The Penguin nears release on HBO and there could be some summer surprises in-store. Way back in 2023, the announcement of the slate saw Gunn arguing that this was a marathon and not a sprint.

“A lot of people think it’s going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences,” Gunn explained in January of 2023.

San Diego Comic-Con is quickly approaching and DC Studios is reportedly planning a surprise. A recent article from Variety lays out the big events coming up this weekend. They report that insiders have mentioned DC’s intention to break some news that hasn’t been announced regarding some unnancounced property. A lot of fans are sad to hear that James Gunn’s Superman might not be around at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. While The Man of Steel will be absent, there is still a lot to look forward to for DC fans. Gone is hard at work on season two of Peacemaker, starring John Cena. The Penguin is ready for its release on HBO and Max. On the animated side of things, Harley Quinn and Kite Man: Hell Yeah! are prepping for a showing at the big summer event as well.

One thing that fans should look forward to this weekend is Creature Commandos. James Gunn’s first big release of the DC universe era is an animated show that would likely have a presence during San Diego Comic-Con. During the show’s recent TCA tour, producer Dean Lorey hyped the holiday release.

“That’s going to be the first expression of James Gunn’s DC Universe. We’re considering that canon, and I think it expresses his perspective, tonally, on where he wants the universe to go,” Lorey said to TheWrap. “It’s Suicide Squad. He’s done it. People aren’t going to be surprised by what it is, but I think they’ll be really encouraged to see how completely it’s going to inform this new version of the DCU, which I’m very excited about.””

Could We Ever See Marvel & DC Together?

DC vs Marvel

San Diego Comic-Con weekend always has people dreaming big. A recent interview with Collider saw MCU architect Kevin Feige asked about a DC/Marvel crossover. It feels like that’s pie in the sky right now. But, incredibly, the idea is not as ludicrous as it would have been a decade ago. Gunn and Feige have an existing relationship. The future is anything but certain and the Marvel Studios head is firmly aware of that fact. So, keep your head in the clouds and keep dreaming. Because, it could just end up happening one day.

“I think about it occasionally, like any fan would think about it. I don’t know when in the heck that would ever happen, or how that would happen. But we’ve been talking too long for me to go, “Never! We’d never be able to do that,” Feige explained. “We’ll never say never, but no, no plans. I’ve seen the paparazzi shots of the Superman set looking cool. So he’s [James Gunn] focusing on that. We’re focusing on this [Deadpool & Wolverine].”

Superman (2025) director James Gunn is clarifying where the Superman reboot sits on the DC Universe timeline in relation to other upcoming franchise releases – specifically the animated series Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2.

The short answer is that Creatures Commandos will take place before the events of Superman (2025), while the events of Peacemaker Season 2 will occur after the events of Superman.

Gunn was active on the social media platform Threads, addressing a fan question regarding rumors about what DC Studios actually has in production. Gunn made it clear that only the officially announced projects – “Superman, Supergirl, Penguin, Peacemaker, Lanterns, and a handful of animated projects – are in production, and anything else on the DCU slate that was previously announced has yet to go into production:

Nothing is “in production” unless it’s been greenlit. Right now that’s Superman, Supergirl, Penguin, Peacemaker, Lanterns, and a handful of animated projects. But Paradise Lost like many other titles known and unknown is still in very active development – it will be in production once we have a script or scripts we think are great and ready to shoot, never before. As an aside, we aren’t officially cast on anything that isn’t greenlit. 🧜‍♂️

When one fan asked “Will Peacemaker release before or after Superman?” Gunn answered “After. It follows the events of Superman.”

dcu-timeline-movie-tv-releases-creature-commandos-superman-peacemaker.jpg

Another fan jumped in with the follow-up question: “Is creature commandos set before or after Superman?” to which Gunn answered, “Before. All of these initial projects are happening in the order they’re released.”

For reference: Creature Commandos is expected to debut on HBO Max late this year (December); Superman (2025) will be released in July of next year, with Peacemaker Season 2 following afterward. It seems that the content will also follow a chronological line, with Creature Commandos being set immediately after Peacemaker Season 1; then the events of Superman unfolding, followed by the events of Peacemaker Season 2. That’s not a trend that will probably last; DC fans have already speculated that a project like Paradis Lost (a look at the Amazons of Paradise Island) could jump back in time to the ancient past.

What Is Creature Commandos About?

creature-commandos.jpg
Creature Commandos key art

According to James Gunn’s previous presentation on DCU releases: “The new series picks up directly after our Peacemaker season one finale, which leaves Waller with her hands tied operationally, meaning that she’s no longer able to get away with putting human lives on the line to carry out her clandestine morally questionable missions,” the filmmaker shared in his video. “Instead, she recruits a ragtag band of misfits, not unlike the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”

As stated: Creature Commandos will release in December; Superman has a release date of July 11, 2025; and Peacemaker Season 2 sometime later in 2025.

Jack Quaid, the actor best known for his role as Hughie Campbell on The Boys, revealed in a recent interview that he had auditioned for James Gunn’s Superman. The star didn’t get too far into the process, admitting that he submitted a self-tape and then never heard back from the filmmakers — but it’s funny to note that if he had gotten the job, we could have had the same Superman in Superman and the animated My Adventures With Superman, in spite of them being produced by different people and developed under different management regimes at Warner Bros.

“I didn’t get very far,” Quaid admitted on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast (seen below). “I put myself on tape and it went nowhere, and that’s fine. I’m totally cool with it.”

Quaid also says he knows David Corenswet, suggesting he wasn’t exactly surprised to find out that it was he who eventually won the role as the Man of Steel.

“I know David Corenswet,” Quaid added. “He’s one of those people you meet, and you go ‘Oh yeah…whenever they need another [Superman], it’s probably going to be you.'”

Superman stars David Corenswet as the title character, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Superman is still a few weeks from completing principal photography, but DC Studios boss James Gunn already knows what his next writing project will be. Whatever it is, Gunn isn’t saying — in part because he’s too focused on getting Superman through production to be giving much mental space to theoretical future projects. Gunn, who directed the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for Marvel Studios, was hired in 2022 to run the newly-formed DC Studios with producer Peter Safran. Superman is the first big movie he’s writing and directing, although he also penned Creature Commandos, the animated series that will come out first.

While speaking with fans on Threads last night, Gunn mentioned a few new (but vague) pieces of information, like the fact that there are “a handful of animated projects” already greenlit for DC Studios. Asked if he knew what his next movie was, he said he did.

“Uh huh,” Gunn posted. “But it’s just a distant corner of my brain as I’m focused on what we’re shooting.”

That’s mostly interesting in that it suggests the next thing he’s writing is not something that has been greenlit, and possibly not a direct continuation of the Superman story. Of course, that’s making a lot of assumptions and there’s always a chance Gunn will roast us on social media for it later.

James Gunn’s Superman has been in production for several months now, bringing to life the first live-action entry within his and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. Earlier this week, Gunn took to social media to announce that the film has completed its shooting in Cleveland, Ohio, which it has utilized for various exterior shots of the fictional city Metropolis. In a recent update on Threads, Gunn revealed that there are “still a couple weeks left” of production on Superman following their time in Cleveland. Gunn had already confirmed that he and Superman‘s cast will not be attending San Diego Comic-Con later this month, as it would conflict with the shooting schedule.

“We are not done shooting,” Gunn writes. “Still a couple weeks left. Just done shooting in Cleveland. And yeah it’s a long shoot… but we’re getting close!!”

Superman‘s Cast and Crew

Per DC Studios, Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

The DC Universe Slate

The DC Universe is headed into a new territory, with James Gunn and Peter Safran shepherding a set of movies and television shows based on DC’s iconic characters. The first film on that roster is Gunn’s Superman, and it was confirmed earlier this month that the movie’s ensemble cast will include Will Reeve, the youngest son of legendary Superman actor Christopher Reeve. Will, who is a real-life journalist and ABC News correspondent, will play a television reporter in the film, and he shed more light on the cameo during a recent interview with TMZ.

“I know the folks making the film, and they’ve been so kind to me and my family, and I had a free day, so we made it [happen],” Reeve explained, adding, “I don’t know what I’m allowed to say. It was a really great experience; they were super friendly; it was quick, easy…I was actually more nervous doing that than I am whenever I’m on TV for my normal job cuz there was so many people around and I had to memorize one line, but still!”

Written and directed by Gunn, Superman will star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

Christopher Reeve Documentary

This news of Will Reeve’s cameo arrives amid an ongoing celebration of Christopher Reeve’s legacy, which included portraying Superman across multiple films in the 1970s and 1980s. DC Studios is helping distribute an upcoming documentary about Reeve, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Storywhich will get a limited theatrical release later this year.

“I saw the stunningly beautiful documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story a couple weeks ago,” Gunn said in a statement when the acquisition was announced. “It emotionally floored me. Peter & I knew DC Studios needed to be involved & I’m grateful to Peter & our WBD family at Warner Bros, HBO, CNN & Max having worked so hard to acquire it. It’s a wonderful film by wonderful filmmakers not only for people like me who love Reeve’s work but for everyone.”

Superman is currently scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Superman just wrapped filming in Cleveland, Ohio and James Gunn posted a thoughtful letter on social media to celebrate. Over on Instagram, the DC director gathered his thoughts about the month and change they’ve been capturing a new era of The Man of Steel on the shores of Lake Erie. Gunn knows how important first impressions can be, and Superman made a big impact once images from the 2025 blockbuster hit the timeline weeks ago. His entire cast is assembled around a massive table to enjoy a meal together and you can feel that communal spirit coming out of the image. The director shows some real love to Cleveland here and it’s clear he takes the city’s ties to Superman very seriously. Check out what he had to say down below.

“Cleveland, today we are leaving you after six amazing weeks of shooting. From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place,” Gunn argued. “I would walk down your streets and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city – not once, not twice, but dozens of times. The wonderful background actors on the film were always so fun and funny and they clapped after takes, something that reminded us Hollywood cynics why we make movies in the first place.”

James Gunn posts a cast dinner.

“The pride you feel in being where Jerry and Joe first created Superman was invigorating. You exemplify his spirit. But just as much it’s the pride you have in your community, your hometown, your radio stations and restaurants and gathering places that touched me,” he continued. “Every city would be so lucky to have people that loved their city as much as you. You simply couldn’t have been more wonderful, kind, or accommodating to me and our performers and crew. Thank you a thousand times over for being our friends and partners on this film. Much love to you all.”

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery are both thrilled to bring Superman back to the big screen. James Gunn’s take on The Man of Tomorrow comes as the largest introduction to his DC Universe yet. The parent company’s brass, including CEO David Zaslav, have been none too shy about hyping what Gunn is building with DC. During last year’s Upfronts presentation, the executive threw his whole weight behind what they were doing with the former Marvel Studios standout.

“We got James Gunn and Peter (Safran) working very hard on DC, which is going to be a very big growth driver for this company,” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav told the assembled press. “We are very bullish on DC. The Superman script first draft is done. Gunn is on a mission from god. It is a really good moment to prove out on DC what we got and how strong it is globally for long-term sustainable growth.”

Superman‘s David Corenswet got some lovely praise from Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung. The filmmaker stopped by the Inside Total Film podcast to talk up his disaster blockbuster. In Twisters, Corenswet is an antagonist. But, next summer James Gunn will show off the actor as the new Man of Steel. A lot is riding on that movie and Corenswet follows a popular name in that blue spandex. Even with all of that being the case, Chung thinks that his star brings a sort of purity to the role that makes a lot of sense for Clark Kent. Fans might not see it in Twisters. But, those kernels of goodness were hard for the actor to shake when he came back to the set after auditioning on Superman.

“So, David was going out for that role when we were filming. I remember, we were all really secretly rooting for him,” Chung told the podcast. “When we found out he was on a shortlist, a lot of us were saying, ‘You know, he actually would be a great Superman. He is such an imposing and big presence. Larger than life. But, there’s this genuine purity to him that I feel fits in a lot with Superman.”

“I remember the when he came back from auditions in Los Angeles. He came back to set and he was still carrying himself that Superman to us,” the director added. “He’s someone who stays within the role a little bit. I’m not saying he’s method. But, he kind of takes on that aura a bit… When he came back from that audition, I remember feeling that he must have got it. It was this weird sense I had that he just looked the part and felt the part. I feel James Gunn really lucked out finding this guy because he’s going to kill it.”

Superman Sees David Corenswet Become The Man Of Steel

David Corenswet is the new Man of Steel.

If you are a little impatient for a larger reveal of Superman, social media has been buzzing about James Gunn’s big DC movie for weeks now. The Cleveland Plain Dealer has had images of Corenswet in a bright blue costume take me to the skies and helping the people of Metropolis. The director has largely let these leaks go because they do provide a window into what they’re building for the DC universe now. For someone is busy is gone, this has been a labor of love for a couple of years now. Recently the Superman filmmaker took the social media to celebrate a year since a screen test between his two leads. Joining David Corenswet in 2025’s big summer blockbuster is Rachel Brosnahan. He knew this one was going to be good from the moment they walked through the door.

“One year ago today David and Rachel screen-tested for Clark and Lois,” Gunn’s post read. “When they first read together it was like magic. What a wonderful year it’s been with two of the most extraordinary, vibrant, and meticulous actors I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with. I can’t wait for you to see them on screen in just a little over a year. “

Superman‘s Isabela Merced has some praise for James Gunn’s process with this movie. Empire Magazine profiled the actress ahead of of Alien: Romulus and the new take on The Man of Tomorrow. Merced said that putting on that Hawkgirl suit is still a thrill everytime it happens. DC fans have been peeking at the filming for Superman on social media. Kendrra Saunders has already made some appearances on-set with her flying alongside other heroes. Merced and others have to know that a large portion of the comic book world is absolutely leaning on every single word from the production. The Hawkgirl actress isn’t spoiling anything though. But, it’s clear, she’s soaring with anticipation like the rest of us.

When it comes to Superman details, the actress is on high alert. Merced joked, “I can feel James Gunn’s eyes boring into the back of my head.” She continued, “Honestly, inside I’m just a nerdy guy. I feel like that’s who I actually am. I’m geeking out every time I try on the supersuit! It’s just the coolest thing in the world to me.” A lot of DC fans feel extremely similarly and can’t wait to see all these characters in action.

James Gunn’s Superman Drips Style

james-gunn-superman-movie.jpg
James Gunn begins the new DC with Superman.

When it comes to this new era of the DC Universe, all eyes are on James Gunn’s Superman. In Cleveland, this production has spawned so many viral images already. But, the affection runs deeper than simply seeing your DC favorites realized with comics-accurate suits. Merced’s Kendra Saunders will play a role alongside some of these heroes. In her eyes, Gunn is doing an amazing job at capturing a fresh take on this wild world of characters. She told The Hollywood Reporter about his signature style and how its shaping Metropolis.

“James Gunn is so creative and he has such a unique style, and whatever he touches, he always adds his own flair to it,” Merced told the outlet. “And for that reason, I’m very excited. I was directed by him during the [screen] test for this, because I auditioned for this. I got to do [the screen test] with my other castmates, and that was really cool. It felt very professional; it was almost like a legitimate shooting day.”

“So I’ve already learned so much about his process, and this man has such a solid team,” she added. “He has the best of the best working for him, and they’ve worked together for so long that it’s only up to me to mess it up. So I hope that I can understand and take notes and continue training and just be healthy throughout it all. Then I’ll be able to give the fans the performance they deserve.”

Like Clark Kent ripping open his button-down shirt to reveal the Man of Steel’s symbol, James Gunn unveiled a shiny new Superman logo. The director and co-chair of DC Studios on Thursday took to social media to post a one-sheet for the upcoming reboot formerly known as Superman: Legacy — the first film in the new DC Universe taking flight into theaters one year from today on July 11th, 2025.

“In exactly one year #Superman opens all over the world,” Gunn wrote when sharing the new Superman poster on Instagram.

Gunn’s first DC movie since 2021’s The Suicide Squad “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile hisKryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent ofSmallville, Kansas,” the official synopsis states. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and theAmerican way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness asold-fashioned.”

The Superman release date has its own legacy: it’s a tribute to Gunn’s late father.

“My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started tocry. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’trealized,” Gunn previously shared on social media. “I lost my dad almost three years ago. He was mybest friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my loveof comics and my love of film and I wouldn’t be making this movie nowwithout him.”

“It has been a long road tothis point. I was offered Superman years ago — I initially said nobecause I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotionalthat gave Superman the dignity he deserved,” the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker added. “Then a bit less than a yearago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage —how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmerparents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

David Corenswet stars in the title role opposite Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, and Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents. The movie also features a superhero ensemble that includes Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Frank Grillo as his Creature Commandos character Rick Flag Sr., and María Gabriela de Faría as The Authority’s Angela Spica.

DC Studios’ Superman soars into theaters July 11th, 2025.

MaXXXine Review

ComicBook critic Jamie Jirak’s MaXXXine review celebrates Ti West’s threequel – even if it’s the weakest of the bunch:

MaXXXine is a horror film made by rror fans for horror fans, and it’s meant to be seen on the big screen. West’s X trilogy will likely go down in history as one of the most prolific horror endeavors of the decade. Everyone will undoubtedly have different favorites and, while MaXXXine may rank last here, it is guaranteed to have some hardcore fans.

The DC Universe is about to be reborn, with James Gunn and Peter Safran shepherding a new era of movies and television shows. The first cinematic outing on that list will be Gunn’s Superman movie, which is currently filming for a summer 2025 release date. Some set photos have given us an early glimpse at one of the film’s costumed characters, Angela Spica / The Engineer (Maria Gabriela de Faria). In a new interview with Marvel Latinews, de Faria  spoke about the experience of donning her superhero cotume.

“It is a beautiful suit, and every time I put it on, I don’t put it on by myself,” de Faria revealed. “I have four people putting it on me because it is not easy. One of those people has to be a man who grabs me hard and puts me on, or rather, pushes me in the suit, and every time I put it on, I say: ‘I love you suit, I love you, I love you suit, let’s do it, we’re going to achieve it.'”

“The character is so physical and you do a lot of things, so, well, there is a bit of resistance with the suit always, no,” de Faria continued. “But yes, it is hot, especially when we film in the middle of summer. It is quite challenging, but, as an actor, you learn to use the difficulties to your advantage and at the end of the day I am dying on that set and my character is trying to survive too. So beautiful.”

Who Is DC’s The Engineer?

The mantle of The Engineer was originally created by Warren Ellis and Tom Raney in 1997’s StormWatch #48, as an unnamed man who wanted to remake the world with nanotechnology as part of The Changers. After dying two issues later, the mantle was succeeded by Angela, who became a member of The Authority beginning in 1999’s The Authority #1. Both iterations of the character are genetically enhanced by nanites, with Angela having the ability to turn her body into liquid and solid shapes.

“I’m very happy and can’t shut up about it so here’s a compilation of moments after I found out [James Gunn] had invited me to play Angela, The Engineer,” de Faría wrote on Instagram after her casting was first announced.

Written and directed by Gunn, Superman will star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

James Gunn’s Superman movie is still in the throes of production, preparing to deliver a massive blockbuster upon its summer 2025 release. In recent weeks, Superman has filmed an array of exterior sequences in Cleveland, Ohio, providing some surprising public glimpses at what the film will deliver. The latest glimpse arrived on Wednesday, with set photos showing the first look at Guy Gardner / Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) and Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) in their superhero costumes, alongside Michael Holt / Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Clark Kent / Superman (David Corenswet). the set photos feature plenty of recognizable elements for Guy and Kendra — their bright comic-accurate color schemes, her masked helmet and mace, and his signature bowl cut haircut. But other aspects of the costumes have immediately been met with online scrutiny, namely the matching white paneling across their costumes and the LordTech symbols embossed on their chests.

We’re still over a year from Superman‘s theatrical debut, and probably several months away from the marketing campaign beginning in earnest, so we don’t yet have context for how these hero costumes factor into the film. Given Superman costume designer Judianna Makovsky’s experience working with Gunn on comic-accurate costumes for The Suicide Squad and the last two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, it is safe to assume that there is some sort of intentionality behind these new aesthetic choices. In fact, there is a chance that they could play a key role in Superman‘s storytelling — and in the larger storytelling set up for Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe

The first clue might be within the LordTech symbol, as it has been heavily theorized, thanks to Sean Gunn’s casting as Maxwell Lord and various other context clues surrounding Superman, that Lord might be funding the film’s version of the DCU Justice League. There is certainly plenty of comic precedent for this, particularly with Lord bankrolling the fan-favorite Justice League International roster (which Guy is among the most beloved members of) in the 1980s, in an effort to rebrand the team for a globalist and capitalist world. Sure, the comic iteration of the JLI were never explicitly branded with Lord’s name or business ventures, instead wearing their own individual flashy jumpsuits. But having Guy, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific all wear the Lord brand could help immediately establish their team’s reputation as a corporatized entity in the DCU, providing a stark contrast to Superman’s status as a freelance hero.

There’s also the fact that Guy, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific’s costumes share matching silhouettes and white paneling — an aesthetic that, while ripped almost exactly from the comics for Terrific, is a bit out of place with the other two characters. Outside of special gear worn on a random odd mission, no comic roster of the Justice League has worn costumes that match this much, a fact that has given some fans pause upon seeing these photos. But that reaction might be part of the point, especially in a landscape where matching uniforms have grown common in superhero media. Parallels can easily be drawn between these color-coordinated suits and the Quantum realm suits worn in Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, which homogenized the aesthetics of multiple heroes into time-traveling soldiers clad in red and white. Guy’s vest, while technically comic accurate, even has the same visual effect as many of the screen-accurate Marvel Cinematic Universe outfits. You can also see the resemblance to many of the costumes worn on The CW’s Arrowverse of DC shows, which often boiled down to heroes with the same silhouette and some sort of personalized leather jacket. Time will only tell if these parallels are intentional, but it certainly wouldn’t be the first time that Gunn’s superhero work has been interpreted as a meta dissection of the larger genre.

Either way, there’s a good chance that there’s more to Superman‘s superhero uniforms than meets the eye. Superman’s colleagues in the superhero world be a portrait of commercialized sameness — only for his actions to inspire them to break out of the mold — would be a profound storyline for the movie. It has been safe to assume that Guy, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific will appear in plenty of additional DCU projects after Superman, and this theme would give them a chance to lean into their own individuality (and the costumes) that fans already know and love. Through the costumes of Superman, we could get a window into what kind of fleshed-out superhero world the DCU already is — as well as what it can be.

Superman is currently scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters on July 11, 2025.
